My personal Rating- Four Stars

I’ve never been a big fan of the “second chance relationship” trope (when a couple meets again after a while and they’re no longer a couple, but still attracted to each other). I typically feel jipped with that trope because I want to see their first falling in love and all the sweetness that comes with it, but I hate to see the couple break up—which is an important part of that trope. This book made it work so well.

I adored Ava’s caring for her parents and their relationship. They were focused-on God and His will and therefore their relationship were so supportive and healthy, which was just lovely to read. Her parents weren’t just there, they were a large part of the story with their wisdom and prayers and I loved that so much.

I felt a little frustrated with Ava towards the end and Joseph at the beginning, but it was still a very sweet read with a satisfying ending.

The whole story was wholesome and interesting. It’s a book that you feel like you’re basking in the warm sunshine when you read it, does that make sense? Many of the books I’ve read by this author have that same…element? Ambiance? Experience? It’s definitely a talent. You see the characters grow and fantastic faith content while reading a sweet story.

Still my Forever by Kim Vogel Sawyer is a very sweet second chance historical romance that is set in 1905 Kansas in a Mennonite community of Russian immigrants. Our main characters of Gil and Ava were previously engaged but Gil had left to pursue his dreams and love for music in New York City. Gil has since returned to Kansas for the summer – will Ava and Gil rekindle their romance from the past? Does Gil have his priorities straight as he works to direct the town band? Will he stay in Kansas after the summer or head back to New York City?

This is a perfect story for music lovers! 4 stars. Gil is a composer who begins to direct the men’s band and establishes a youth band and soon realizes what means most to him in this beautiful small town. Ava really cared about her family and that was so great to see. Since the characters are in their early 20s, it was nice to see parents so involved in the story.

The faith content in this was also great, many prayers and verses discussed. I also loved the parts centered around the youth band – the children were adorable! It was so inspiring to see this sweet little band come to life and how happy the children were.

Overall, the romance was sweet, the ending was satisfying and uplifting, and I just really enjoy Kim Vogel Sawyer’s writing. Thank you to WaterBrook Press and NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy for me to honestly read and review.

Outside and in, this story was a beautiful concerto to the soul.

My heart sang while absorbing Ava’s and Gil’s journey through broken hopes, shattered dreams, and misunderstandings. Each chapter brought forward fresh opportunities and plot twists that surprised and delighted me, as well as delicious treats I could practically smell as the characters snarfed them down.

Themes involved in this novel’s plot were numerous and beautiful, yet the one that outshone them all was that of discerning and following God’s direction in one’s life. The other themes underscored this exquisitely.

It was wonderful to see a character stepping into his mentor’s shoes until he could find footing of his own. Even more fun was that cousins were featured as rivals. The musical aspects of this story were written with detailed flourish and provided the backbone for the sweet-as-honey romance. It was neat to see participants of all ages within the community.

The complex and charming characters fit perfectly with the author’s trademark style. Even the one I loved to hate grew on me, as Mrs. Sawyer is so skilled at doing in her stories. As per usual, her cast carried regrets and hopes, flaws and talents, dreams and faith as they journeyed together.

The narration by Barbara McCulloh was fantastic. She’s one of my favorite narrators, and I was glad to see (and hear) that she’d signed up to do the reading for Mrs. Sawyer’s latest novel. Very great choice!

Still My Forever is a Christian historical romance novel by Kim Vogel Sawyer.

Gilbert Baty returns home to Falke from NYC in self-imposed shame. His former sweetheart, Ava Flaming, is still unwed and living with her parents, though four years have passed. Is there any way for him to win her heart again?

Kim Vogel Sawyer’s biblical knowledge and family heritage are front and center in this novel. She lends authenticity and historical accuracy to the story with the details gleaned from her family heritage and her devoted research. There is some literary license taken in order to fit the storyline.

The story is revealed through the alternating viewpoints of the main characters using appropriate chapter and section headers. The characters and plot are fully-developed and believable. The inspirational plot completely engages the reader. I give Still My Forever 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers who enjoy inspirational Christian romance.

My thanks to WaterBrook & Multnomah and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.

A heart tugging historical with a focus on family, faith and a sweet, tender romance. Readers who enjoy a prairie town setting in the early 1900's will love this story set in Kansas. The kids are delightful as they get together to form a band under a hometown favorite son newly returned from New York. There are references to the prodigal son parable with a few twists. Looking for guidance in big decisions brings up the importance of prayer, as the main characters look for purpose in their lives and grow in faith through difficult circumstances.
A coming of age story with a lot of heart and faith, a clean romance with a satisfying conclusion. A good read for teens and up. It would be nice to revisit the town in another book. A stand alone read for now though.

Another solid faith inspiring read from one of my all time favorite authors. It was interesting to be swept away into the historical setting of a Mennonite community made up of Russian immigrants. The song of this book was lyrical in it’s written word as well as the character of Gil. It is a story of second chances and has many points to ponder. I especially loved the children’s band and the patience Gil showed them. Ava was a breath of fresh air in her willingness to help others including her mother without complaint. It was a joy to watch her grow and come into her own as a woman. It was creative and quenched my thirst for something different. I hope there is a sequel with Joseph having his own story.
I won a copy of this book from a bookstore. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Another satisfying read by Kim Vogel Sawyer! This cover was gorgeous and I was super excited for this book to arrive in the mail, as the synopsis of this book sounded intriguing.

First off, I really liked the musical aspect of this book. It felt well-researched and I fell in love with the town of Faulke. (I think I spelled it right? I do apologize if I messed it up.) The townspeople were portrayed as a close-knit community. They were definitely not perfect, that was clearly seen, but I felt like I knew the people at the end of this story. And don’t get me started with precious Timmy and his tuba!

I really liked Ava. I dare say she was probably my favorite character in this story. The relationship she has with her parents is so sweet and I really liked her mother, Maria. For some reason, it took me a bit longer to get attached to Gil, but I was soon enjoying his POV, as well.

Bitterness and jealousy, I am sad to say, has been an emotion I have dealt with in the past and I felt a strange connection with Gil’s cousin, Joseph Baty. I’m not proud of the fact that I’m acknowledging that I did feel like I understood what Joseph was feeling, but I did. I did like Joseph’s character development throughout this story, but I do wish I had a bit more insight into his story towards the end and see further how God continued to work in his life. But I think that’s the only complaint that I have.

This book was a beautiful depiction of Godly love towards our neighbor and how God can work through some difficult circumstances and relationships. And can I just say I LOVED Timmy’s ending? It really brought a few things in this book full circle and gave some closure to one particular character in this book.

I can always expect a good read from this author and I was certainly not disappointed. I give this book 4/5 stars. I look forward to her next release!

Still My Forever is a clean, sweet story that takes place in a Mennonite community. Ava has been content living with her parents, with her mother being sickly since she had been ill years before. All is well until her ex fiance comes back to town after four years. Gilbert has come back, thinking it was going to be temporary, until the end of summer when he would then return to New York. While home in this community, he begins to direct the men's band, and soon starts a boys' band, then deals with the jealousy of his cousin. But can Ava and Gilbert still obtain the sweet relationship they once had? Or is is gone forever? Excellent story!

This was a very interesting and refreshing read. I enjoyed how tight knit this small Mennonite community was and how they were all friendly and looking out for each other.
I was able to relate to Ava at her young age of 21 and feeling lonely. Ava dedicated most of her time taking care of her sick mother and had not been able to move on from her past heartache. I myself spend most of my time taking care of my grandparents so I understand how exhausting it may get. Ava had a great attitude about it and I could see how much love she had for her parents.
Gil was such a good character. He was an angel with his compassionate heart for the small town of Falke. He came back to his hometown feeling defeated by his failed musical endeavors but he was able to slowly gain his confidence again by helping the town’s youth grow in their own musical talents.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and how sweet it was. If you’re looking for a nice and peaceful read that makes you feel good inside, definitely read Still My Forever by Kim Vogel Sawyer.

My thoughts: STILL MY FOREVER is a sweet historical Mennonite romance which centers around family, community, and music. Ms. Sawyer has created a lovely community which the reader automatically feels a part of and characters to fall in love with. My only issue was the mom who was ill and bedbound except for when she didn't want to be and she was up and running. I didn't understand her. I did enjoy reading the book and hope there's another following about Joseph. don't miss STILL MY FOREVER. Recommended. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.

Gil. returns to his hometown after being in New York City for 4 years while he attempted to pursue his musical career. Ava rejected Gil's marriage proposal and request to move to New York City and has remained at home with her parents.

Ava and Gil are quickly reunited upon his return but Ava's heart is still hurting after his perceived rejection of her four years earlier. Gil begins to help with the men's band and the young boy's band and befriends the extremely adorable Timmy. Gil becomes an asset to the community and is such a loveable character. Will he be able to hear the music in the small town or is the big city where he belongs?

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

Four years earlier, Gil left Falke to try to make a name for himself in the New York music scene - and Ava stayed behind to care for her parents. The heartache has never fully gone away, and when Gil returns to Falke for the summer, Ava is reminded of all she'd hoped for - and lost. Gil never achieved what he hoped for in New York, but he's not ready to give up yet. Meanwhile, he's in Falke for the summer, and finds a place for himself directing the town band - and starting a new boys' band. But as he spends more time around Ava, their families and the band, he begins to question his priorities. Should he really go back to New York, or is the work and family here more important? As Ava spends more time around Gil, she starts to question her motive for refusing to leave. Did she make the right decision - and if not, should she take this second chance that seems to be being given?

Priorities in life are always a difficult thing to manage, and this book definitely explores that. I did find that it took me a while to really get into the story, but once I did, I was hooked. Honestly, though, I suspect that I enjoyed watching Gil and Ava interacting with various family members and friends more than with each other. I particularly loved the way that various people stepped in to help Timmy - it was inspiring. I also appreciated the way that Joseph finally came to terms with Gil and their shared history - I didn't feel like I always understood where he was coming from earlier in the book, so it was nice to feel that he got to the point where he had peace about it all. All in all, an interesting read with a satisfying ending.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

When I first started reading this title and realized it was Mennonite fiction I was not sure about continuing the story as this is not a genre I prefer. But knowing how much I enjoyed the author's writing from past books, I continued. I am so glad I did. It did not take long for the story and characters to sweep me away. The part where the title is explained is so sweet, The heroine's actions towards the end of the story did frustrate me but I was satisfied by the ending.

3.5 stars, rounded down

My biggest complaint about this was definitely that the main couple are already in love when the book begins. They grew up together and fell in love 4 years prior to the action of the story, at which point Gil left her to go to NYC to further his music career. When the book starts, he has returned home and their romance basically picks up right where it left off. I like seeing the couple fall in love with each other within the pages of the story so I didn’t enjoy those aspects of the book. I liked both Ava and Gil well enough, but I didn’t love them.

However, I did really enjoy the musical aspects, and the band of little boys (I especially loved Timmy). Overall I liked the story, but it wasn’t a favorite of mine from this author.

The story is written from two viewpoints—Gil’s and Ava’s. They used to engaged to be married before Gil left to pursue his dream of music in New York City and Ava stayed home in Kansas to care for her ailing mother. Licking his wounds from an unsuccessful time in NYC, Gil returns to his hometown for the summer. Ava is still single and caring for her parents. As they re-connect, we learn about the hurts in their lives and how they search for God’s calling. While home, Gil uses his musical skills to serve in the community. Ava wavers between accepting a marriage proposal from another man and taking over the bakery in town. A sweet story with a satisfying conclusion.

This was a beautiful and sweet story.

Set in 1905 Kansas in a Mennonite community of Russia immigrants, this story tells of finding purpose. It's also a story of forgiveness and letting go of bitterness and jealousy.

Sawyer has the gift of creating characters that you fall in love with. Some many of the characters in this book were easy to love, dislike, and pity. The interactions between characters was strong and I found myself in tears as I learned the stories of different characters. I found myself laughing at the antics of the kids. This is a feel good story. But not necessarily an unrealistic happily ever after story as well. I appreciate how the author kept the story real.

This is truly an uplifting feel good story!

always know I’m in for an enjoyable reading experience with Kim Vogel Sawyer! This one tugged at my heartstrings and kept me riveted throughout. Gil and Ava’s story kept me guessing; there were so many stumbling blocks in their lives keeping them from knowing what the future held, especially whether Gil was to return to New York to further his career. Gil was devoted to his music, and Ava was devoted to her parents. One of my favorite lines in this book is “She said she heard the soul of the music when you directed the men”.

With encouraging biblical messages subtly woven in, I found this to be a very uplifting and encouraging novel.

"Winning is grand, but it can make one full of himself. Losing hurts and can be discouraging. " "I don't want either. " I thought this a great quote and a simple reminder from the Lord to lean on Him always no matter what happens. I always love this author's books and once again she's hit this novel out of the ball park with gusto. I'm never disappointed in what she writes. The story is told between Gil and Ava but Sawyer does it so smoothly that where one leaves off the other picks up like it's all one novel instead of two different points of view if that makes sense. I took two days to savor this story because I didn't want to see it end. I loved every minute of it. I'm a musician so this particular story spoke to my heart. I love music but have never tried to compose it only play it. I play the viola and it speaks to my heart. Music soothes the soul as they say and it truly does. I loved Gil and somewhere along the line he became my hero. Not sure how or when but he did. Ava and her family became my family My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Gil Baty returns to his Mennonite hometown in Kansas to consider his options after four years in New York City without success as a violinist, a conductor, or a composer. Finding that his childhood sweetheart and former fiancee Ava Flaming is still single is a surprise, as is being pulled into leading the local men’s band and starting a boys band soon after. But not everyone is happy to see him return, and a rival for Ava’s affections adds to the tensions between Gil and Ava, and to all of Gil’s efforts in town.

With Gil's future uncertain, could it be that God is calling him to stay in Kansas? Or is He calling Ava to follow Gil back to New York City? With an emphasis on prayer, though God does seem to give Ava the opposite of what she asks, this second chance romance includes themes of family, grief, and healing. Once again, in Still My Forever, author Kim Vogel Sawyer has crafted a touching and uplifting story centered around a musically gifted main character.

Recommended for those who enjoy Historical Romance with a strong faith element.

Still My Forever by award-winning author Kim Vogel Sawyer, is a beautiful Christian historical romance with heartwarming side stories. Set in early 1900’s, it is centered in the fictional town of Falke, Kansas. a Mennonite community. These people have a Russian heritage and speak Plautdietsch or Low German language. It is the first time I have encountered that in my reading, and I loved learning something new.

This is the story of Gil Baty. He is a musician and composer who left Falke to follow his dreams in New York. It is also the tale of Ava Flaming, the beautiful young woman and baker that he left behind. Gil returns to his community after a few years and finds a few things different.

Author Sawyer has written a poignant story of love, grace, redemption, and forgiveness. She has woven a few side stories into the main one and tied them together beautifully with threads of spiritual lessons. I was captivated by this emotionally charged novel and was drawn to its unique characters. It is a page-turner!

There is so much to like in this book. I found timeless life lessons, children who stole my heart, caring people, hurt people, music, and even kittens. At the back of the book are discussion questions and author notes. Don’t miss the notes. They are interesting. I highly recommend this book and give it a 5 star rating. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley, but these are my honest words.

I adore historical fiction and this story touched my heart in so many ways. Seeing Gil and Ava struggle to find their shared path to happiness was, at times, emotionally exhausting because I just wanted to shake them into seeing the options they had. But the story held perfect rhyme and reason and it was pieced together in harmony that sings to a person's soul.

This read began when Gilbert Baty comes home from NYC to Falke Kansas, not really having accomplished what he wanted to, but with hopes of going back?

Can you go home again, seems like it with this loving town, they seem to rally around this young man returning to their fold, if even for a little while. There are complications, and some feeling run very deep. He left a young woman that he loved behind!

This little town has had so much heartache, they have lost so many to a fever that went through their town a few years ago, including Gil's parents! Through all of this, the people of this town have a love of music, most come from a Mennonite community in Russia, and are all very close. Love how they all rally around those in need.

Through out the read there is the question of will Gil return to NY and what about Ava? Answers come along with answers to secrets long held. A really good read you don't want to miss!

I can always count on a clean, sweet story from Kim Vogel Sawyer. This is another great example of her work. Living in a small Kansas Mennonite community, Gilbert Baty decides to set off for New York. He wants to pursue his career as a composer and song writer. He recently has asked Ava Flaming to marry him and she has excepted. When he tells her his plans she has to refuse to go with him. Her mother is very ill and she can not leave her and her father. The story picks up 4 years later when Gil has returned to town. I found this to be an interesting novel with a very sweet love story of not only the couple, but about family and true friendships. I want to thank Waterbrook Press and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. The opinions expressed in this review are totally my own.

Gilbert Baty left Falke Kansas for four years to become a composer. He is now returning to write music but does not want anyone to know about his time in New York City. He feels he was a failure. He sees Ava Flaming who he was once engaged to but left Kansas to be a composer and Ava could not leave her mother who was sick. Gilbert starts a young band after a child wanted to play with the adult band. Ava always baked for her fathers band and now bakes and deliveries the treats when the children practice. This is a beautiful story of two people that loved each other trying not to fall back in love again. I loved the characters and the story line in this book. Kim Vogel Sawyer can draw you in her books. Hard to put down to you read it all.

This is another beautiful love story from one of Christian fiction's most gifted storytellers. Along with Ava and Gil's story the reader is introduced to a wonderful cast of characters in the town of Falke. I hope this book has a sequel to continue the story of this special place. If you are looking for a heartwarming read, you will not be disappointed!

-Historical fiction
-Second chance romance
-Christian characters
-Themes of faith, trust, and (pixie dust?) loyalty

Kim Vogel Sawyer is one of my favorite authors of Christian historical fiction, so when I saw my library had Still My Forever, I had to grab it! Although I struggled a bit with the writing style, overall, this book was a great read.

There are three POV characters in this novel: Gil Baty, Ava Flaming, and Joseph Baty. Gil and Ava were both great, though sometimes Ava was a bit annoying with her big reactions to things. I get it, though. It is a second chance romance, so naturally there’s a bit of tension and past hurt between our main two characters.

Joseph, Gil’s cousin/adopted brother, drove me nuts with his mood swings, though. One minute he’s happy-go-lucky and supportive as all get out, and the next he’s angry and violent. That made it difficult for me to relate to and enjoy his character.

The fictional Mennonite small town of Falke is so quaint and adorable! I love the tight community and how everyone knows and cares for everyone. It’s so sweet, and not something we always get in fiction. Naturally, this includes a lot of characters, but it provides such a warm extended family for our MCs.

I adored the faith content Sawyer incorporated. Characters prayed, attended church, and discussed God. Ava struggles to trust God after Gil goes to New York, however, as the book progresses, she begins to lean on Him again. I especially loved the conversations about God between Ava and her mother. ❤

I really adored the music in this book. Gil is a composer, and when he comes home, he directs the town bands. I love how Gil expresses himself through music and really seeing that fleshed out on the pages. And his song for Ava… so sweet. If you love fiction with musical elements, you’ll love this historical novel.

However...

I’ve never noticed this when reading Kim Vogel Sawyer before, but for some reason I found myself wanting to edit paragraphs of this book. Sometimes there were sentences that were just… redundant? I didn’t notice it much after the first few chapters, though, so I’m not sure. Maybe my brain was just being overly critical.

Overall, this is a sweet, clean Christian historical romance. If you love authors like Carrie Turansky and Janette Oke, you’ll enjoy Still My Forever‘s second-chance romance with faith and musical elements! It carries the same beautiful, calming ambience of Sawyer’s other fiction and is a lovely read at the end of a long day.

A Truly Beautiful Story

Not having read a historical fiction story in a very long time, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I must say that with Still My Forever, author Kim Vogel Sawyer has made me want to delve more into this genre. It was truly heartfelt and my heart immediately went out to Gil and his broken spirit. It had to be so difficult for him to return to Falke with broken dreams and to a difficult family situation. I wondered how he would get back to his music and to Ava.
As for Ava, I understood how hard it had to be for her. Taking care of her mom, the household and a host of other tasks had her putting her own needs on hold. However, Gil's return had her looking at things in a new light.

How these two forge ahead in their redeveloped friendship and relationship is a truly beautiful story. It was touching and inspiring as they sought God's will for their lives and the possibility of a renewed relationship. The story drew me into what the characters were going through and feeling, and this made the story that much more special. It is a beautiful story that is not to be missed, and I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley. All opinions and comments are strictly my own.

I really enjoyed this book that Kim wrote! She put her heart and soul into it. Ava is a single Mennonite woman who helps care for her mother. Her Mom got very sick during a big sickness that took many from their community including her two brothers. Her Mom has not been the same since that sickness. She gets weak and tired very easily. Gilbert was Ava's beau, but he wanted to compose music and didn't feel he could do it in their small town so he left to go to New York City and Ava stayed to care for her mother. Four years later Gilbert comes home for the summer. He did not have much success in NY and was trying to figure out what to do if he should accept a teaching job in NY or if there was something else he could do. Gilbert takes over the men's band in Faulk, KS for the summer and starts a boys band and let them all know he was there only for the summer. Can he figure things out and not continue to pine away for Ava? Can Ava forgive him for leaving and find forgiveness and can they work things out? You must read more to find out. This is my honest opinion for my honest review. I received this book from Net Galley for my review.

Can a frustrated composer find new inspiration in the woman who once made him sing? A charming romance inspired by a real historical figure from the author of Freedom's Song.

FGilbert Baty returned to Falke, Kansas, four years after leaving town to pursue his career as a composer. Now he's hiding the truth about his disastrous years in NYC. Although he hopes to start writing music again in Falke, he cannot help but be distracted by Ava Flaming, the brown-eyed baker with whom he was briefly engaged, and who still stirs feelings in him he knows he has no right to indulge.

Ava thought she was over Gil Baty's loss. However, she remains drawn to him. It gets worse when Gil forms a youth band in Falke, proving once again what a great man he is.

When the band has an opportunity to compete, Ava could face heartbreak again. Could Gil be taken away forever by music? Could God be stirring in Ava and Gil's hearts a new song that will bring them together?

I give Still My Forever five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!
