Pregação Pura E Simples

Rate this book
Preaching Pure & Simple. This book is pure gold. Stuart Olyott first gave these chapters in a series of monthly seminars in our church, Swindon Evangelical Church, in the year 2000, on Saturday mornings. Men came to these seminars from a wide area, from Swindon, Bristol, Bath, Reading, Gloucester, Calne etc. Some of those men are now in ministry.
Stuart's book challenges our hearts and will as instructs our minds. One of the very best books on preaching.

Very good chapter on illustrations. There's a lot of bad takes out there on illustration usage. This guy gets it. Sermons with bad illustrations are like Mississippi Tex-Mex. Bland, boring, an offensive to the senses.

Concise & simple, but surprisingly substantial — just as the author’s preaching. A surprise was a section on ‘unction’, complete with ‘scare quotes’, as the author confesses the name is not adequate, and endorsement of revivals: I would like to learn more about pastor Olyott’s views on that.

One of the best books on preaching I have read so far. Like the title suggests, the book is also written in a "pure and simple" way. It's so clear and concise, but convincing and full of spiritual wisdom. The Part 3 on "How to prepare your sermon" probably is worthy to buy 10 of this book and to give away to anyone who wants to learn to preach or improve on their preaching.

Five-star book! Well written, personable and applicable for all. It is always refreshing to read books on preaching written by those in the past and those in the present. I had the privilege of hearing brother Olyott in person. His heart, passion and love for the ministry and for the saints pours out of his preaching. If learned nothing else from this man, it was the heart he had for his calling and the ministry. The book is no different.

Throughout its pages we see his wisdom, experience and love for the pulpit ministry and the high standard he held regarding it.

It is not technical in it's layout or premise. This is the kind of book on preaching that a lay person can grapple with and come away with something and likewise a person with years of experience preaching can still glean helpful insight into sermon prep, preaching and he even covers pulpit presence.

With just over two hundred pages the book presents and reads well. I would recommend this book for anyone called to the pulpit ministry.

Certainly this book is “Pure and Simple”.

I and a couple of guys from church have been reading this together, and it has been most useful. Olyott gives clear and good guiding principles for those learning to preach, but also those, already preaching, seeking to improve. Definitely a worthwhile read.

This short book on preaching is excellent in both its content and its layout. I would highly recommend it to those who are preaching in their churches or who may be any preaching in the future. It is also a great reminder for current preachers as well, as it highly regards the importance of the Word of God, the preparation of the preacher and the necessity of the Spirit. The book begins by defining preaching as it is described in the Bible through examining biblical words, the majority of the book then describes the elements of good preaching, with concluding statements suggesting a method of preparation and a memorial of a great preacher in the past. This book is a worthwhile investment for your personal bookshelf or for your church.

If you are a preacher, read this book. I wouldn't say it is the definitive preaching book, but I would say that it is a great book on preaching. It is extremely convicting as to what our motivations should be in preaching as well as helpful in its exhortations on sermon preparation. Do not skip the suggested method of sermon prep.

A solid book on preaching, full of practical and practicible advice. Olyott is straightforward, plain, yet never dry.

He opens with word studies on the four primary verbs for preaching in the NT, drawing practical conclusions about what preaching is and how it ought to be done. My one quibble here is that I don't think he does justice to the distinction between general evangelism and teaching (word ministries given to all believers) and technical preaching (the word ministry reserved for ordained ministers).

The book also takes an odd turn at the end. The final chapter is a biographical sketch of a pastor who deeply influenced Olyott himself. This short eulogy doesn't really serve the aims of the book as a whole.

The typesetting was also less than stellar. It's a bit ironic that a book which endorses care in presentation to avoid distraction contains so many typos, different font sizes, faulty italicizations, page numbers on blank pages, oddly wide spaces between paragraphs, etc.

Overall, though, the book is definitely worth reading. I'd recommend this over Olyott's shorter book, Ministering Like the Master. It covers all the same ground in greater depth.

Overall, the Olyott completes his aim with this volume. He made his case that one should preach clearly, and what the preached should do when he preaches.

As a bonus, there is a wonderful outline of what a preached should do in sermon preparation and a brief biography of a respected Pastor.

That said, there are times Olyott gets distracted by personal opinions with no substance to his argument. He simply says things as if they were true and should be applied to the life of the church or the pastorate. I found myself asking, a few times when reading, “Why though?” With no answer to follow.

Furthermore, there are hundreds of homiletic books that fulfill the same task without the distractions. It’s not worth recommending, but it’s not a waste of time to be read.

As one who often gets the opportunity to preach, while learning on the job, I found this book really practical and helpful.
All who preach (or desire to preach) will learn a lot from this book. I will be using much of this material to prepare my next sermon!

The cover on goodreads is much goofier than the cover of my copy.
Some of his analogies are a little silly, but overall, a very practical and helpful book.

(One of his analogies was puppies respond better to chocolate than beating them. Bro, you’re hurting your dog either way.)

Good book, with easy to read chapters. Most helpful portions were on clear structure, helpful delivery, and supernatural authority.

Unnecessarily opinionated about everything, including small or unrelated matters, and sometimes a spirit of judgementalism eeks in. But overall this is a straightforwardly good book on preaching. 3 stars = I liked it!
The two things I most appreciate about Olyott's own preaching is his structure & his delivery. So I particularly appreciated those chapters. And the best part of the book is the section on a method for preparation. Ultimately the emphasis wonderfully falls on it all being about God and Christ and leading people to encountering him.

I enjoyed the content of this book, it seems a very accurate description of the wide state of preaching in the church presently. I found the flow/structure of this book a little hard to follow.

Traditional ideas about preaching very well explained. There is an earnestness and passion for preaching that needs to be seen more.
