Starting a new job is difficult enough, without your new colleague being a complete arsehole. Competitive, gorgeous, but off limits, the only thing Emily likes about Luke is the coffee he brings her every morning. Until they’re sent on a job together and snowed in. There’s only one bed, and maybe she doesn’t hate her nemesis as much as she thought. And maybe he’s never hated her at all…
A steamy enemies to lovers office romance with all the feels and British banter.

This book was a pointed pick for December, and a reason to sample some Eve Pendle romance for the Christmas season (and as a Pendle first timer). I have to say that although I enjoyed it to begin with, and in few parts and places in between, Her Nemesis Until 5pm doesn't quite get my merry mark of approval for the most part, compared to the short-lived novella delight I wanted it to be. It is very enemies to lovers (in that way one party feels the hostility and the other doesn't at all) and opposites attract, and in a very UK convention, I commemorate. First day for Emily in a new city, fresh start on the day of a new job as the recent hire of a sales division. And to her chagrin, her sunny disposition doesn't get the warmest welcome from her (also new) company colleague. All she wants is to know the secret to his mysteriously sourced, deliciously tasting caffeinated morning beverage. All she gets is a monosyllabic workmate, too quiet to parallel her chatty nature and far too gruffly reserved to engage with. She's Intent on winning over this impersonable human being, but soon enough battle lines are drawn. In her defence he could help his new colleague out by sharing where to get some quality coffee from. In his defence, not all people have the taste to distinguish the difference and he wasn't sure if she'd be one of them. In her defence, he's rude, shockingly quiet and tremendously terse, and could at least offer companionable responses while they're expected to work together. In his defence, sentences are a form of social decorum, and that seems to evade him entirely when he thinks he may have just met the lady love of his life in the form of said sunny new work mate. That seems to leave a man lost for words you see.
Firstly, I have to say that I liked the contrast of Emily's unsavoury impression of Luke versus the actuality of who he is and why he behaves the way he does. It was really quite amusing. I especially loved his form of subtlety that had his every small gesture assume the role of his personal style of courtship. The gift of fresh, high-calibre coffee he leaves on her desk the only outward sign of his hidden interest in her. I don't take considerable umbrage with instant love, if it works it works and I'm happy to let the rest unfold. But the love did feel too instantaneous on Luke's part, since he was practically prepared to set up home with Emily and make her his own on day one of meeting her. There was a touch of forbidden love (but no cheating), since Emily is strictly married. But it was equally as attractive as it was a touch unbelievable regarding the delivery. Though, this was a short read, so we have to expect the like. There's of course the complication of Emily's current status as 'taken.' Another confession from me: I have to admit that I don't see the necessity of having a love interest already engaged in a relationship or married when we're bestowed with the form of a shorter story. I understand it was included as a point of conflict, and that the marriage itself was on its last, very wobbly legs but I'd have rather witnessed the development between Luke and Emily happen as it might have on its own legs, without the distraction of a marriage that only seemed to forestall the romantic transition. But an idea is an idea and I take no qualms with what a writer wishes to tinker with, only that its delivery imbibes well enough. There are creative ways of introducing romantic conflicts without the overstretched timelines of one being in a relationship when we're really mostly interested in seeing a romance bloom between the destined couple. In addition to that, we really could have done without the very prolonged time jumps, of which there are two. They amount to an entire year in passing altogether while Emily dutifully maintains her - more or less - broken marriage. The developments felt too quick to guide what didn't always feel like a believable connection between the protagonists. Though it was reliable in its own way. I'm also not keen on a third person narration with romance, first person seems to bind the intimacy a bit better, both between the love interests and between reader and story.
I did eventually begin to feel disconnected from the story soon enough, though there were places where I found some mild interest. Another issue for me was the questionable sentence structure. I can't say I was enamoured with the writing style nor the writing coherence. Meaning and syntax isn't always easy to understand, and I did have to re-read various sentences and passages to try and guage conversations and the like. It wasn't always successful. I did like Luke, he was very quietly confident, somber, but very thoughtful in that unspoken way that catalogued everything he could about Emily, and then actively sought to act accordingly with that surreptitious affinity for the romantic. And the competitive streak that simmered between them was more an encouraging egg-on on Luke's part than anything resembling one-upmanship or superiority. He always found a way to push Emily in a way that mattered but with no real heat behind it, only that other very steamy kind of heat of course. We can clearly tell that the 'enemies' part of their enemies to lovers was very pseudo rivalry on his part. I also couldn't accurately peg the age ranges of either of them, maybe late 20s, early 30s at a guess? But in any case, this was an ok read which I'd recommend for something quick and light to pass some reading time. This was a Christmas pick for me. Not marvellous by any means but it does include the snowed in and one bed trope.
NOTE: this version of the book isn't actually the correct book edition I had read. I attempted to get an update for the book with the alternative cover edition but haven't yet heard anything back from Goodreads Librarians group since my request in early December 2023. We'll see if we get an update!
UPDATE: Most recent book edition was added.
Content Warning/Listing: some profanity. Recent death of a grandparent via heart attack. Infidelity within a marriage (not between the main love interests) and divorce. Dirty talk, long sex scene.
I thought this was really cute and really sweet! Luke and Emily are coworkers and Emily considers Luke her nemesis. When they are stuck on a project together that requires them to travel, she starts seeing him in a new light, especially when they end up needing to share a bed! This is a quick steamy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. This was reminiscent of The Hating Game, so if you liked that one and are okay with a novella, I think you'll enjoy this one too!
I did not have high hopes for this book at all. I got it when there was the stuff your kindle day a while ago. And now that I finally read it, it was actually so fucking good.
There was a plot, smut, romance… what more could you need? The time in the book did go by a little quicker than I would have hoped. Like it would be many months later (but all within a year), and there was some stuff that I would have liked to see within that time frame, but I enjoyed the book either way.
Luke was actually such a sweet fucking man. He made coffee for her everyday and then at the end, when he opened the lid to her coffee cup, it revealed a heart made of foam in her latte. He put a heart in her coffee everyday for a year 😭
He said that he used to always have condoms with him, and he used to always change it out, but when he saw Emily, he knew she was the only woman for him so he didn’t care to ever change it out.
It was love at first sight for him and he waited for Emily for a whole year before he finally got her. She was married and he always kept his hands in his pockets when talking to her, to refrain from touching her.
When they finally got down, that was some shit fr. He was so obsessed with Emily that even just one night with her like she wanted, he jumped at it.
Luke was such a hopeless romantic, and I loved it. I just really really didn’t expect to like this 94 page book so much, but I did. It may not be for everyone, but I would still recommend it to read as a short little book.
4 ⭐️ Is it enemies to lovers if he's always been in love with her?
I loved this novella so, so much. I should've known the cover was giving Xmas vibes, but I didn't and now I've read a snowed in, only one bed trope novella in August. Oh, well...
Emily is the brand new sales hire in Luke's real-estate office, and she's supposed to sit right in front of him. The only problem is that, upon looking at her once, Luke realises that any and all other women have disappeared from his mind and now there's only her. There's quite a couple of problems with that, though. The first and most obvious, she's his co-worker, and second, she's married. When Luke tries to hide his massive crush on her, Emily sees just an antagonistic guy who's curt and gruff and unlikable... if not extremely attractive.
Months go by, times moves on and these two only get better and better. Although there's instant attraction here, it's not that insta-lovey. He falls almost immediately, but can't show it so in the end we find out about all the ways he was trying to show he cared, being super subtle and stealthy about it.
This was a great time, sweet and romcom-y... and the spicy scene was the cherry on top!
I couldn't connect with the characters. Not sure it was because the book was in 3 person or because you didn't feel the connection between the two characters. It was blah....
Loved this book! Really good that the author gave a low down of the general themes (kind of a trigger/spoiler warning at the beginning) so you can guage if it's going to be for you or not. The book itself is only short but the perfect length, well paced and spicy. Something I struggle with in the romcom genre is the sometimes annoying descriptive nature of them, but this was not like that at all. Loved all the characters, didn't realise it was one of a series so now I'm off to get the rest 🎉
I enjoyed this one, it's a nice, short, cute read. The characters are lovable and even though there is some insta love, it was done well that it didn't feel weird. The plot worked out well, even with the couple of time jumps. I think if it was longer and we got to explore between those jumps, it would have given the book an added layer to it, but this is just a personal thing. I still very much enjoyed it and will be checking out more.
The MMC being instantly in love with the MFC is unbelievable and annoying to me. Aside from that, I liked this book. Low on the spice scale compared to her other books, but this was still enjoyable. Love an only one bed trope. 🌶️🌶️
i’m working my way through all the books i’ve gotten during the stuff your kindle days and this one was cute. almost exactly like the hating game but she’s married and gets divorced. basically the only difference. this one is much shorter though
Very short and sweet. It managed to give a good amount of character development in a short amount of time. I haven't read anything else by Eve Pendle, so I don't know if this would've been a better story in a longer format. I love the "enemies/rivals to lovers" trope, but this really wasn't that. This is one of several books where the enemy distinction is one-sided. If a coworker brought me coffee every morning that we worked together, I would have a hard time calling him any sort of enemy.
I love this book, ngl. This would certainly pass as a holiday romcom film if u ask me 🥹
Luke, my darling Luke why did you have to be a big walking green flag 🥹✨ ur so sweet and handsome ur def one of my book bf favorites
Emily, my sweet girlboss Emily AAAAAA ur one of the examples that it’s okay to make first move lmaooo but still, i cant believe Eric wasted someone like u 😭
The book was so sweet and as an enemies to lovers fan, i can say that it delivered well on that aspect. I’m not a fan of the pov used so i cant say anything about it but, with a few tweaks with the execution of the story, it would be perfect💎
NOW ALL I NEED IS FOR LUKE TO BRING ME COFFEE EVERYDAYYYYYY

Cute little novella that fans of The Hating Game, The Spanish Love Deception, and The Love Hypothesis will enjoy. The characters could use a bit more development, but I was still invested in their story. If it had been a bit longer, maybe a little more slow-burn, I probably would have given the book five stars instead of 4. Overall it was a great little afternoon read and I’ll definitely read more from this author!
Note: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only
Very mediocre romcom. I should know better than pick up something with “grumpy-sunshine” in the description, but oh well. From the beginning it was barely tolerable, especially when as he leans over the h’s computer, the H’s inner dialogue has him ruminating on “…A vibrant deep red that made him think of ripe strawberries, roses, and ruby engagement rings.” 🙄 Yikes.
Emily Tumbler is starting a new job at a real estate firm – the only problem is, her co-worker Luke Weston doesn’t seem to like her much. His gruff manner is the opposite of welcoming, even more so after he finds out she’s married to an absentee husband. He becomes her nemesis at work – the sales person who she has to beat. And their banter continues for a year as her rocky marriage gets rockier. Will they ever make peace?
This was an entertaining novella that had a bit of a quick start but soon settled down to the main storyline. It’s a fast, fun read with a few sexy scenes thrown in. I enjoyed the read, but I would’ve liked to see more to the story – because of its length, there were a lot of parts missing that are in longer romance novels. We don’t get a lot of the characters’ backgrounds, for example, and there weren’t a ton of tangential characters or scenes to help fill out the storyline. I’d have liked to see the story fleshed out more, even though I enjoyed what I did read. Emily and Luke are both good characters that a reader will enjoy seeing make a match. I’d recommend this book for readers who’d like a quick fix of romance – it’s definitely a fun read – but don’t have time for a longer and more involved storyline.
Emily's first day as an Estate agent doesn't go as planned. With her chippy personality she tries to make conversation with her colleague she's supposed to be partnering with. Luke is a one word sentence man. Emily has noticed that Luke keeps his hands in his pocket, but only when he's around her. After Emily asking & trying to figure out where Luke gets his ☕. Luke has Every time they are at work. Then the two have bets & healthy competitions together. Emily enjoys those moments it seems to build her confidence. Luke has had an affection for Emily since the 1st day she walked into the office. When he notice the ring on her finger; he kept his hands to himself. Recently Emily's behavior has changed to emptiness & sadness. Luke notices a missing ring on her finger. Luke discovers Emily has gone through a divorce. Does this give Luke a chance to express his true feelings for Emily? Will Emily discover that the competition,☕, & ,other forms of expression have been his love for her this whole time. What happens when they have to go evaluate his grandma's house and end up staying the night at a beautiful inn due to weather conditions?
This book was short and sweet. I got it as a quick enemies-to-lovers read and it (somewhat) delivered.
Now I feel the term enemies-to-lovers is very loosely used and the FMC calls the MMC "nemesis", but he really is not. From page on we know he has taken a liking to her and thinks of her often and brings her coffee every single morning they meet - so not really enemies now are they?
But there is a little bit of banter and a plot - which is not always given in short quick reads. The characters are also likeable and there is even some character development. There was no third act break-up - which I love! - and there is a one-bed trope included. The love scene is well written and we get a happily ever after.
This would have made a great 200+ page read as well. But is a book you will mange in a couple of hours. Can recommend to anyone looking for a lovely short read (but do not expect too much steam)
Good short story to help get me out my reading slump. Loved their story line and definitely could have read it as a longer book without the time jumps and got to know more about the characters (got to meet some of lukes but I needed more). Read it on my kindle but I do absolutely love the cover design! Wasn't a fan of the 3rd person writing. I think I'm so used to reading 1st person now it's just become natural to expect. I think that would have helped feel more connected to the characters and things would have made more sense. Some sentences were quite hard to read and I had to re-read them a few times to take in what was written. Would love to read a sequel about these 2 and get to know them a bit more
I give 3.5 stars. I don’t like usually novella as I found them quite rushed so I new what to expect. However I’ve read some really great short books so I decided to give this one a try. The story is good and has potential, however I found some of the story lost on information which we didn’t really need instead of maybe focusing on the main characters and their development. To be honest I found some the heroine story a bit strange and the start of the sex scene was absolutely awkward. Would’ve found it more believable if they actually got to know each other during all that working together time but…Anyway, I would also say that I’ll give another try for this author!

Emily starts a new job. She is in Real Estate. Her work mentor doesn't speak much and she thinks he hates her and so the back and forth begins. This is very much a good read for fans of the Hating Game Movie. Instead of a Wedding they go to his grandmothers house who has passed to get it ready to list. I would recommend this book. It was a fast read and very entertaining. I feel like the fast forwards in the book could have been a little better played out but that doesn't take away from the story itself. Has some good spice and good banter. I would say 2 or 2.5 peppers. For the 106 pages it was just enough spice to not be over the top or too little and cause you to lose interest.
A short novella that acts as a form of prequel to the series. This is a charming short book with two well developed main characters. It does however differ from the rest of the series in a number of ways; firstly there is no room for the misunderstanding, breakup and then reconciliation that you get in the main books and there isn't the same level of humour.
At the start it does not appear to be a prequel as it is not set in the same small community and the MMC is not vastly wealthy, but you get introduced to some of the other characters later in the book as the main relationship is allowed to develop.
