Rate this book
Three days ago, Ember Squires had things in order. She was a well-known detective in Seattle. She had a son she adored and an ex-husband she was learning to navigate. Her life was ordered and purpose-driven. But that life was shattered, stripped away in an instant, as she sat huddled along the side of the road in a relentless snowstorm. Her car beyond repair, her phone ruined, her son's head in her lap, she was forced to accept the only offer of help that came her way and the ironclad stipulations that came with it. Seventy-two hours later, Ember finds herself an employee of Hell.Forced to call on the skills she gained working for years in the Pacific Northwest, she now scours the world, seeing it in an entirely new manner. Invisible to all she might have known, unable to contact anyone from her past life, she must push forward, handling whatever is thrown her way, all in honor of a contract she signed that fateful night. No matter how ill-prepared she might be or how much she despises what is thrown her way, because to recant would be unthinkable.

Wow this guy has written a lot of rubbish, I mean books. To be fair some of them might be good or even great. This particular book was not. I don’t like to give a rating for a DNF, there, I’ve admitted it - DNF at 45% but I felt I had to warn others. I really wanted to chuck it in at 10% but thought it must get better. By 25% I realised it wouldn’t but ploughed on regardless as I have with many others but by 45% I just couldn’t take it anymore.

You might be tempted to pick it up, like I did, thinking it would be about a kick-arse female vigilante type (OK it’s a bit overdone but with the right hands on the wheel they can be a bit of fun) but no. This was about some lame demons and whatever the godly equivalent is picking fights with each other over something that wasn’t explained in the first tedious 45%. It couldn’t even fit into the horror genre as it wasn’t horrifying. Eureka, I’ve got it - it wins the no plot, lame dialogue and pointless story award. Oh and the characters were all unlikeable. It might have gotten better although I doubt it. Yep after 45% I had no idea what the story was about and by then I couldn’t give a single fuck either. There’s nothing more to say except - you were warned!

Ember Squires wakes up in a bad space and faces Kaia, her new partner - whose job is too make it worse.

So launches a captivating read. Like start early in the day captivating, because the pace is fast and you need to know what happens next. The Hunter goes beyond the detective procedural into a kaleidoscope of genres that may set a new baseline for imaginative fiction.

Ember has sold her soul to the Devil and now must do his bidding - in the battle of good Vs evil. But which is which? It is not always clear - and often doesn’t matter.

Following Ember on her hellish quest the reader enters a preternatural domain within a mythological framework - with magic, strict rules of engagement and many classical allusions. There is also a crime to solve. Ember was, in life, a dedicated detective making life hell for the bad guys.

The Devil had need for a good investigator so rookie soul Ember now rounds out the team. Kaia needs to break Ember into the ways of the underworld and help her on the case. Kaia does both with delightful passive/aggressive antics. And all this mayhem without any superpowers. Well there is accelerated healing because no one can die - well, since they are already dead… It get gets complicated.

The Devil’s team is hot on the trail of a needful thing and, of course, Angels have their own team trying to derail their efforts and get it for themselves. In setting up the caper the Devil’s intentions seemed good and the Angels - not so much. It seems the earth is an eternal battleground for competing overlords. Very evenly matched overlords it turns out. Interesting ‘good’ and ‘bad’ dynamics play out with a whirlwind of twists and turns.

Ember, freed from earth-bound rules, dives into the case. Lies, deceit, and double dealing - particularly on the part of the Angels keep everyone off balance. Who do you trust? What is a victory? Can there be a reward?

Ember, pick up line two - it’s the Devil for you.

This book has an auspicious start: Ember Squires has died in a car crash. At the moment, that's all we know.

Then, shortly thereafter, a character thinks to herself, over the course of the last 106 years this is the first time this had happened. Now I'm thinking, what is this book all about?

Next, Ember leaves her apartment and finds, Kaia, a young woman outside who tells Ember that she is her handler and a direct employee on earth, and will accompany here everywhere she goes. And Ember replies, "We're still on Earth?"

Then Kaia says, "Welcome to Hell on Earth"... Technically, it's known as "middle realm." As it turns out, they both now work for the Devil and Kaia is a demon, a higher entity than Ember, the newbie.

Then Kaia explains the rules. Now it's getting more interesting. We know that Ember is a hunter, but we don't know yet who or what Ember is hunting.

Now you might think this is all about the Devil's work. But, thoughtfully, though, it should have been obvious that there are angels at work here too. And there are. And it gets real interesting when there is a battle between a couple of angels and our two anti-heroes, Ember and Kaia.

It's certainly different than any other book I've read. It's a treat and you should read it.

Dead is dead, right?

That’s not quite what Ember Squires discovers. In fact, she has never felt more alive. The previous Ember is gone; she is now a Hunter, a Hunter for Hell.

Waking up to a reality where her old life as a detective is but a memory, Ember is tasked with decoding the mysteries of her new life working for Hell. She is saddled with an exasperating partner sent from below to accompany her on a vague mission to recover a missing person on Earth, known as the middle realm to the denizens of both Heaven and Hell.

With Ember needing to learn Hell’s rules of behavior on the fly, and having Heaven’s opponents to spar with during her task, Ember charges into her resurrected life with guarded enthusiasm and bravado.

Kohler has written an intriguing tale that had my imagination thinking about the afterlife and deals humans attempt to make when faced with difficult situations in their own life.

Ember was a police detective. That is until a snowstorm and a car accident took that from her. Now she is a "Hunter" for the devil. That's right Hell's main man himself! How she got into this predicament is laid out in the book. Kaia is Ember's handler. She is supposed to help guide her through her mission. Let's just say things don't go as planned. Kaia and Ember are not BFFs by any stretch of the imagination. This story is written with humor and sarcastic implications which I love!
This is not your typical Good vs Evil story....oh no no!!! You really need to read this book. FYI the ending blew me away!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Can not wait for the next one!

Bring on the paranormal!
Good thrillers with paranormal background are rare and this one didn’t disappoint. If you like Dustin Stevens’ writing you will want to read this too. What makes a book enjoyable is not only the story but especially the writing style. I choose books based on who wrote them and not the blurb about the content.
There is also the afterthought of is evil as demonic and is good as angelic as one expects?
Although books are always better than movies I think this one would do great as a screenplay as well.
Can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Ember signs a pact with a repesentative from the Devil in order to save her son who apparently died with his mother in a car accident. Typhon needs a det, ective on his team and thus Ember is brought into service. However, she is basically thrown into a situation on her first day, completely unprepared
as to what she is expected to do. But she is a fast learner. She is paired paired with Kaia, a demon who does little to help her but Ember takes it in stride knowing that time is on her side(a pun)

Wow, talk about making a deal with the devil. I’m not sure what you call this genre; 2 demons ( Agents for the devil) fight with 2 not-so-nice angels ( Agents for God) over a captured demon and a valued artifact. One of the demons is newly recruited and this is her first assignment. The learning curve is steep and there are lots of rules. This was an entertaining read. I can imagine this made into a dark comedy movie.

I went into reading this book with an open mind as I wasn't sure if I would like it or not as I have not read this author's books. The book is far better than I expected and I found that I was engrossed from the start and loved the way the writer portrayed good and evil. I was surprised by many things in the book and it kept me guessing what would happen next. If you want a book that is full of surprises and that will keep you turning the pages you will love this book!

What a Concept!

Never would I have believed that I would cheer for a demon to get the upper hand! But in this case since the demon in question bargained for her son to live after a terrible accident she gets a reward of sorts, because of her selfless deal with Satan, a special "dispensation". The action was spellbinding and the writing was tight and concise. I was riveted to the story from page one.

Surprisingly Good

She gave up her life to save her son… by becoming an employee of Hell. A Hunter. Her first day on the job was supposed to be easy - find a guy and take him back home… but things turned out to be more than she could have imagined. This book was fun. Angels and demons. Mystical items. Needing food and drink but, well, there are rules.

Can’t wait to see what happens next!

This book was a gift to me and after reading the intro blurb I didn't think I wanted to bother reading it. HOWEVER, I was drawn in to the story immediately and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it.

If you're not sure but are willing to take a trip into a mild paranormal story you will enjoy this one, especially if you believe that devils and angels do exist.

OUTSTANDING!

Wow, was this a surprise! A totally different take on good and evil, heaven and hell.

Great characters, entertaining plot, occasional humor and just an all-around great read.

Although I read this on Kindle Unlimited, I will buy it to keep in my personal Kindle library as one of my favorites so I can read it over and over again.

Excellent book.

Exciting!!

The story of Ember was very exciting. The idea of the two opposing forces classically thought as good and evil was completely turned around in this story. I puts them both on the same playing field that lets the imagination of the reader work for itself. This was really a great story to read.

Would you willingly die to save your child’s life if it meant working for the Devil ? If so, this series is for you ! A cop makes a deal with devil to save kid. What follows next for her is world full of hurt and too many rules. She’s tasked with finding a man and soon becomes embroiled in battles between good and evil.

T. R. Kohler is a new to me author and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed The Hunter. It has a nice twist to the supernatural world of Angels vs. Demons. I feel like it has a lot of potential for a series. Looking forward to more from this author.

Unusual Plot

Most fiction books generally have a good vs. evil plot. I usually find myself rooting for the guy in the white hat.
This is the first time I remember cheering for "evil" to win!
The Hunter grabbed my interest from the first page. Hope there are sequels in the future.

The end never realized.

IT WAS tedious at first but it developed into a readable book. The end a definite surprise but suspected something was up but never in a million years would have guessed an ending LIKE you presented. Kudos!

I’ve now read Hunter but after Street Divorce. I don’t recommend reading them in that order but I’m happy to know the backstory and now can frame the characters better for future reads!
