If there’s one thing you’ll be sure to discover in Mitchell Burke’s journey of words, it is the deliberate emphasis on the harsh realities of this life, of this world, of a man who has experienced the mountain rise and shattered fall of a human heart. His reminders of why we must not fear death - we do not end, we do not begin - and why our nihilistic tendencies are no better than our selflessness - you are everything as much as you are nothing - serve to show that we really are all one in the same. We are all human. We all have the ability to open the closed door with warm hands.

In reading this poetry collection I've realized that poetry can be hard to read. Mitch's words are often a dark take on the world we live in, and yet, I can appreciate his honesty and the way he weaves words together.

The thing is that all poetry is music, but it's hard to understand another person's rhythm. Everyone once and a while though, you come across a certain line or passage and your heartbeat syncs up with theirs. Suddenly, you feel like they know you and you know them, and that's the beauty of it. One example is the opening quote of this review.

I definitely recommend this book, if you enjoy poetry, and I will be purchasing Mitch's next collection if he publishes one. You can also check out his first collection "The Corner of The Room".

A privilege — simply. This collection is an effusion without plume, without garnish. It is frank. Uncompromising. Offered personally and vitally. The book lays lean, vulnerable, like a bare, gleaming throat. These are the seasons of Mitchell Burke’s deepest life, his world — the violent and generous and untampered facets therein. I can only visit the words. I can only touch the flavours, forms, absences, at once — leaving them again, assured of the searing value of each difference; of the similarity (like blood) that binds them.

I'm grateful. Proud. Moved. One Wing, Without Wind is a crucial ballad of pain; a sincere and unmitigated stroke of one man's release.
