A female-to-male transgendered activist and shaman, Raven Kaldera is a pagan priest, intersex transgender activist, parent, astrologer, musician and homesteader. Kaldera is also the author of "Hermaphrodeities: The Transgender Spirituality Workbook" from XLibris Press. The founder and leader of the Pagan Kingdom of Asphodel and the Asphodel Pagan Choir, Kaldera has been a neo-pagan since the age of 14, when he was converted by a "fam-trad" teen on a date. Since then, he's been through half a dozen traditions, including Gardnerian, Dianic, granola paganism, Umbanda, Heithnir, and the Peasant Tradition. He is currently happily married to artist and eco-experimentalist Bella Kaldera, with whom he co-founded the Institute for Heritage Skills.
For a rather specific audience. There are many books that if you read them mean little to you, or mean a lot to you. This is one of them, and that means that unless you have experience and insight into certain things this book might not work for you. It simply isn't written for you. This is like a fourth-year University Coursebook in many ways. In a good way, it expects you to understand certain basics and goes deeper into them.
The author begins that he won't pussyfoot around and he will not indeed, going directly for the jugular.
Information very useful for those that might need it, and it makes it a hard sell for those that are just interested in energy since the things he talks about are... a bit advanced. But if you read it now and don't understand half of it you might do later. Or you worked in these matters and want some deeper information. You are certain to find something.
Now, the different chapters lead you in simple but slide into deeper topics that might be connected, for context, might or might not. But interesting to learn about the parallels and get some deeper understanding.
Things are not always easy to put in small blocks, closed off, walled off, no doors, things are connected and though this book won't give you all the answers you seek it makes you think. And isn't that the most important thing?
Also, ethics are important in anything. Moreso with occult dealings and energy manipulation. Having a guide teaching insight how to use certain gifts ethical will aid many young wanderers.
If you're looking for a relationship self-help manual with a vampiric theme with strong BDSM undertones… I suppose you could do worse?
Raven Kaldera is a controversial figure in pagan and heathen circles. Sometimes deservedly so, sometimes not, but nonetheless he is known for substituting his UPG for fact or straight up inventing facts in his books. On the other hand, he's the type of writer who always practices what he preaches, and it shows in his content. On the topic of modern vampirism, little is set in stone, so Kaldera is free to say whatever he feels like and has no accountability for reality. Ye have been warned.
Reinterpreting relationships as a power transaction, be it in energy or blood, shows how "donors" or submissives can successfully take charge of their own desires and boundaries while teaching "vampires" techniques to better respect their partners health and safety. Even if the reader doesn't believe in psychic vampirism, the general underlying metaphor works better than most books on relationship advice. Despite the focus on unequal power dynamics, the book isn't explicitly about BDSM. Instead, it's about energy and emotional management. The latter third of THE ETHIC PSYCHIC VAMPIRE tackles vampirism and spiritualism, particularly within paganism and neo-shamanism.
The book, subsequently, is about rules in relationships. Sometimes the rules are about sex, certainly, but the rules mostly concern general conduct. In some cases, the emphasis on rules is a welcome sight, such as how to safely draw blood form a donor. Other times, Kaldera simply extrapolates from his general observations about unhealthy relationships instead. Sometime he is genuinely insightful, such as how chasing after "bad boys" might give someone a sense of power and validation, even if they look like a sheepish follower or victim from the outside. Other times, he's reassuring us not all overweight people are frustrated vampires.
Barring a personal disclaimer in the beginning, he fails to substantially explain how he reached his blanket statements and rules if he doesn't have a personal anecdote to accompany it. As such, the better sections are those where Kaldera has significant experience, such as the unique problems arising from raising a vampiric child. Kaldera provides a number of exercises to develop ethical vampirism, but they are primarily oriented to people who already know they are vampires. Subconscious vampires may struggle to identify their needs and wants.
THE ETHIC PSYCHIC VAMPIRE is very short, so the reader can easily skim past the bad sections without missing much of note. As the Kindle version is currently less than $5, it's worth a look if the topic interests you.
