Witch girls Chocolat and Vanilla were best friends before they came to the Human World. But the competition to see who will be the next Queen of the Magical World has come between them. Worse, Vanilla has embraced the Dark Magic of the Ogres, who are the enemies of all witches.
A day at the beach turns into disaster after Chocolat and the Ogre prince Pierre get caught in Vanilla’s magic spell and end up in a vast and dangerous space called the Forgotten Path. If she cannot find her way back to the Human World in time, Chocolat will lose the contest! The Path leads her to the ancient witch Amber, whose magical help comes with a price. And some startling memories about their younger years return to both Chocolat and Pierre. . . .
Moyoko Anno (安野 モヨコ) is a Japanese manga artist and a fashion writer, with numerous books published in both categories. Her manga and books have attained considerable popularity among young women in Japan. Though she primarily writes manga of the josei demographic, her most popular series, Sugar Sugar Rune, (serialized in Nakayoshi) is targeted at primary school-aged girls. In a recent Oricon poll, she was voted the number eight most popular manga artist among females and thirteen in the general category. Her manga Happy Mania was made into a television series in 1998, followed by Hataraki Man in October 2007. Sakuran was made into a movie in 2006. In the movie Japan Sinks, she has a cameo role alongside her husband; their characters were also married. The movie was directed by Shinji Higuchi, who, like her husband Hideaki Anno, is a co-founder of Gainax.
Anno won the 29th Kodansha Manga Award for children's manga in 2005 for Sugar Sugar Rune.
I love how Pierre and Chocola’s relationship is developing but this manga is SO messy. The drawings, the spots, the pages are so.... baroque I don’t even know what to see/read first and it takes away some of the good stuff.
As I thought, this is one of my favorite book. The relationship between Chocola and Pierre grows step by step but they gave to us so much joy!! Can I talk about Pierre with long hair? A godness.
I'm thankful to have the opportunity to read again this wonderful book!
Fifth volume out of eight: 2.5 stars I think the plot is just getting messy. I loved the development of Choco and Pierre's relationship even though it was too convenient for me. I did not understand what was happening in the second part of the volume. The pacing definitely was over the place and resolutions to some conflicts came too easily. And honestly, I'm starting to think Chocolat is as dumb as Vanilla.
Pros: No Vanilla drama. Genderbend Pierre. Cons: The art style is beyond understandable. I get nothing of what is drawn. This is really stopping me from enjoying the story.
Wow, what an adventure! I wasn’t expecting so many twists and turns in this volume.
Between the battle against a giant spider, the journey through the cocoa desert, the magical street performance, and the shady merchant, this fifth volume of Sugar Sugar Rune is full of surprises! Honestly, I didn’t think the universe of this series would be developed this deeply. Focused entirely on Chocola and Pierre, it shows how much more complex their relationship really is.
My only downside is, once again, the same thing: the relationship between Pierre and Chocola. He’s in high school, and she had just started middle school at the beginning of the series. Even though their story is well written, I just can’t overlook that big age gap (even if it feels less shocking in the magical world, it would’ve been better to simply make them the same age).
I also realize now how different the anime I used to watch on Canal J was compared to the manga, probably much more toned down.

- When they're trapped it gave me vibes from the atla episode The Cave of the Two Lovers. I'm always here for the enemies to allies to possible lovers but knowing the ending for Chocola and Pierre...yikes - When Chocola worked for Ambre it reminded me of Psyche's story. MYTHOLOGY VIBES YES - Your fav could never break gender norms like Pierre does (i'm ironic btw but that scene was great)
More building up of plot, character, and the dimensions of the magical world. This is the volume that really shows how Chocolat and Pierre get together in ways outside of their obvious good vs. evil dynamic. It's really nice to see them interact in a new way while they're stuck and alone together in the magical world.
That being said, I remember this volume intriguing me the most when I was a child, specifically because the "memories" chapter really brings up a lot of questions that are really only answered near the finale.
I love this volume! This is my favorite volume in the series and I love to watch how the relationship between Chocolat and Pierre changes and develops as they find their way out of the Forgotten Path.
This volume contains chapters 24 - 28 + Bonus Chapter Rune 24.) All Alone in the Cave Rune 25.) The Forgotten Path, The Forgotten Memory Rune 26.) The Witch from the Plains and my Apprenticeship Rune 27.) A Great Adventure in the Magical World! Rune 28.) Alchimie and the Black Market Special Bonus: Chocolat, Vanilla, and the Dream Star
A wonderful read (more like a watch since I barely remember turning any pages), I was sucked in by the plot. Vanilla in Extreme Evil Witch Mode casts a vast illusion that sends the entire cast to the beach.
Beach scenes in anime and manga are so common they often make my eyes roll, but this faux-reality beach was so awesome I wanted to cry. I utterly loved this volume!
OOOOH Pierre!! He is one of the hottest guys in a manga (after Light Yagami in Death Note). I am so taken by the relationship between him and Chocolate. The story is still "cute," but it is moving at a good pace. I love it...it's adorable.
As mentioned in my last review, I never really know what to expect from this manga. I like that the good and bad guy lines get blurred at times. I get more curious with each volume how this series will end. I'm also really excited to see what will happen now with Chocolat and Pierre!!
