FRIEND OR FOE?

Sociable Chocolat and shy Vanilla were best friends until a cutthroat contest to determine who would be the next Queen of the Magical World ended it all. Since Vanilla has come out of her shell and embraced the Dark Magic of the Ogres, she’s now the enemy of all witches, especially Chocolat. And the Ogres are making their move, crashing a magic festival and casting a dark spell on Chocolat’s school. And though Vanilla has teamed up with the evil Ogre Pierre, Chocolat can’t seem to get the boy out of her mind. How can Chocolat win the competition when she has a crush on an Ogre and still hopes to save her rival, Vanilla?

Moyoko Anno (安野 モヨコ) is a Japanese manga artist and a fashion writer, with numerous books published in both categories. Her manga and books have attained considerable popularity among young women in Japan. Though she primarily writes manga of the josei demographic, her most popular series, Sugar Sugar Rune, (serialized in Nakayoshi) is targeted at primary school-aged girls. In a recent Oricon poll, she was voted the number eight most popular manga artist among females and thirteen in the general category. Her manga Happy Mania was made into a television series in 1998, followed by Hataraki Man in October 2007. Sakuran was made into a movie in 2006.
In the movie Japan Sinks, she has a cameo role alongside her husband; their characters were also married. The movie was directed by Shinji Higuchi, who, like her husband Hideaki Anno, is a co-founder of Gainax.

Anno won the 29th Kodansha Manga Award for children's manga in 2005 for Sugar Sugar Rune.

This volume was better than the 3rd. The stories didn't really add new informations, but were pleasant to follow. Like previously, I've a huge problem with the focus on stealing hearts and making people fall in love with kids, but this time there was also a part about the girls being fat and on a diet. The girls are around 10 years old (and are of course skinny, it's a manga, not a diverse book)! It's a little worrying to imagine kids reading this series, some of the undertones are quite disturbing.

buddy (re)read with Pauline

- Chocola was the I connected the dots meme and the conspiracy board meme and I live for this
- Joe, Houx, Akira and the two guys whose name I forgot are the best side characters
- The plot is getting stronger and more interesting

Rating: 5 love love love / 5

This is very much a multi-layered plot by now, functioning more and more based on the magical world's conflict of witches/wizards against ogres. As Chocolat becomes an official adult witch, she's exposed to more of the problems surrounding the ogres and even the lore behind why they collect noir.

The most heartbreaking part of this volume and story still remains with how Vanilla has ingrained herself into the ogres' world and now collects noir instead of hearts like Chocolat. Furthermore, Chocolat seems to be the only one who hasn't given up on her or is criticizing her, and that's likewise rather sad. Still though, Chocolat remains strong for both of them, which lends depth to her character.

Another climactic ending, leading up to one of my favourite volumes in the series, besides the ending of course. Looking forward to it!

Fourth volume out of eight: 2.5 stars
This is getting worst and I don't know who to blame.
The first part was boring and useless; the second part was pure childish and annoying.
Overall, I cringed a lot.

This volume takes us a little deeper into the history of the Magical World.

Even if the tone stays light, I enjoyed learning more about the oppression of the ogres in this universe, and seeing Chocolat and Vanilla attend a ceremony there.

The artwork remains gorgeous, with especially detailed outfits. In this volume, the two little witches wear stunning evening dresses that truly stand out.

The magical items are as delightful as ever: a lip balm that makes you sound interesting when you talk, nail polish that makes your nails grow… Honestly, if there were a real book recreating the witches’ catalog, I would buy it immediately.

That said, I still struggle with Vanilla as a character, and the pacing bothers me. We’re already at summer vacation, and everything seems to fly by so quickly that it feels like we’re skipping important parts of their everyday life.

Vanilla is orgles princess competing against chocolat. Chocolat doesn't want to fight against vanilla. Pierre rescue chocolat at water near beach.

I love to read books for people of all ages. But there is something about this series that I just don't like very much. Maybe it's because the story revolves around kids that are in fourth grade and they are all falling in love with each other.

Look, I know kids are growing up a little faster these days then they did when I went to elementary school, but kids generally are not dating in fourth grade. I should know, I was an elementary school teacher for a while and still work in the school system. Boys are really only interested in video games at that age, not yucky girls.

The other issue I have is with the artwork. I guess I don't like it very much. So many of the panels are cluttered, which causes me not to really look at them very intently.

My daughter tried to read this series when she was 12-years old and didn't like it at all. She also didn't like the way the artist drew the eyes, which is way too big, in both of our opinions.

Sugar Sugar Rune: Volume 4 continues the story about two girls vying to be the next Queen of the Magical World. It is funny how Vanilla has become the evil one now and Chocolat is the nice one. The artwork, like mentioned above, is cluttered and funky. It is not even close to what I like looking at. The story is hokey and a little scattered, but can easily be followed.

Overall, Sugar Sugar Rune: Volume 4 is not bad, but I sure wish it was a lot better. Maybe things will be different in Sugar Sugar Rune: Volume 5. I can only hope so, but I doubt it.

I rated this book a 6½ out of 10.

This is a fun little series. Except that it always makes me hungry when I read it. I mean the lead characters are named Chocolat and Vanilla and the often do spells involving candy and food. This is really problematic since I read manga right before bed to wind down. But I don't the average kid reader would have the same problem.

I'm really curious to see how this series ends. I can't even predict it because when I think one thing, something happens to change my mind. 4 volumes to go and to find out what will happen for our two little witches!

I didn't like v.4 quite as much as the other volumes in this series because the "plot thickens" in a fairly predictable and cliche way. Vanilla "turns evil" and the "ogres have their day". *shrugs* Otherwise the volume was quite wonderful.
