When simple teenager Henry 'Doofus' Clench walks into the Sheriffs office and tells them the location of a kidnap victim his life is changed forever. With no suspects and no explanation of how he knew where she was he is arrested, charged and sent to prison for fifty years. The kidnap victims name is Jane and she knows Doofus is innocent but can't tell the Sheriff the truth for fear of revealing Doofus' greatest secret.Thirty four years later Jane becomes the first female President of the United States and immediately grants Doofus a pardon. Soon after her own teenage son is taken by Al Qaeda terrorists and they threaten to publicly behead him unless all Muslim prisoners around the world are released.Knowing that Henry 'Doofus' Clench is the only man who can save her son Jane tasks the FBI to find and deliver him to her ranch.
A very good debut novel with fast pace and pleasing characters. Doofus, the titular character is a well thought out hero; a very innocent yet potentially dangerous person with very fresh supernatural powers. I particularly liked the female leads especially Jane as the President. All in all an excellent thriller with good action sequences and appropriate humour
This book reads like it was written by Doofus Clench himself. It had potential to be a great story, but ended up being juvenile. Poor Doofus was a supernatural Forrest Gump and spent most of the book quoting his Momma's sayings. Everytime Doofus spoke I heard Tom Hank's voice. The rest of the characters sterotypical and boring and just plain unbelievable. Secret Service agents, FBI, hitmen, Russians, terrorists, sleeper agents, a Vatican agent ( I kid you not), mythical characters from distant past and God all make an appearance, and none of them make a lick of sense.
