悲運の花嫁

In the thirteenth century, on an isolated island in the far north of Europe, Ulrika, the daughter of a Viking chief, is at a loss after her brother was kidnapped. She stumbles upon a Scottish aristocrat named Grant who has landed on their shores, and she comes up with an if she carries out out a sham marriage with him, she will be able to receive a large dowry from her father. Then she can pay the ransom to get her brother back! Grant is different from the men on the island and unexpectedly her heart beats fast throughout the wedding ceremony. But can this elegant man learn to love a woman who behaves like a man?

ヴァイキングもの。
シェットランドが描かれた珍しい作品。この時代のシェットランドはヤールのいたオークニーと並んで結構、交易の重要ポイントであったと思うのだが…飢えるほどに貧しかったのか？作中の地図に「フェア島」とあるのはメインランドだよね。フェア島はもっと南にあって小さい島。現在とは呼び名が変わっているとか？
スコットランド北部と北方諸島を支配下に置くヴァイキングのロッロとは誰？
この時代好き、シェットランド好きには謎が満載。
兜に角がついているのは笑って流そう。所詮、日本人のヴァイキングのイメージはここを出ないんだなあ。「Vinland　Saga」なんかの作品を生み出す一方で、一般的にはこの域なのは残念。少し調べれば分かる事なのに。
ヒーローがヒロインに較べて印象が弱い。更に言えば、ヒロインの養父ロウメイカーや実父ロッロの方がインパクトがあり、格好よく描かれている。年長者にいいところを全部持っていかるヒーローとは何ぞや。
作画者は非常に良くまとめているが、原作を読みたくなった。（原作チラ見。1206年となっている。オークニーのヤールのサガで最後の偉大なヤールの死んだ年だ。ノルマン征服の後とは思わなかったな。じゃあ、シェットランドはオークニーからノルウェイに統治が移ってたか。「フリードレイ」との言葉があるので、やはり現在のフェア島。では猶更、？？？でわる。作画者の誤りか。）

I actually do not expect that much from harlequin manga yet this novel turns out to be a sweet lovely manga. The characters are given their "space" through the plots et al to develop. The conflict is there...ah, defo something you can read during your free time.
