The author also does NOT say depression is an excuse to be lazy. She says, after explaining there's a difference between clinical depression and situational depression, "Depression can also become a habit and it is one of the hardest medical labels to shake off. That might sound harsh, but the habits of depression - not going out, not exercising, eating too much, sleeping too much, self-medicating and so on - can all become learned behavior patterns which in turn help to prolong the depression, so it becomes a vicious cycle."
