Gideon #4

Resurrecting Midnight

Rate this book
After nearly losing his life in Antigua during a mission that went terribly wrong, Gideon trusts no one. But when a former lover, a grifter named Arizona, resurfaces in need of his skills, she reminds him he is indebted to a man who had once saved his life: the son of the legendary con man Scamz. Gideon is forced to take on an assignment that will lead him to Argentina in pursuit of a briefcase containing one part of a larger puzzle. The “package” contains material that another group of assassins—the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—will kill for to obtain and protect. One of the leaders of the Four Horsemen has a connection to Gideon of which neither man is aware—a connection that will be exposed when they meet face-to-face and gun-to-gun. Each member of the Four Horsemen is a world-class killer, each with a dark and dangerous past, and nothing will stop that team of renegades from completing their mission. But will a cunning woman be their undoing?

In this world of killers, con men, and manipulative women, Gideon struggles to keep promises and uncover information about his past. He soon finds himself at the center of the ultimate double cross and is forced to do what he must in order to protect himself and those closest to him. Set amid the exotic and vibrant streets of Miami and Buenos Aires, Resurrecting Midnight is a seductive, pulse-pounding thriller.

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he earned his degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.

After landing a job in the aerospace industry as a software developer, Eric Jerome Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. Yet Eric quickly found out that writing was something he could do and do well. From creative writing classes to avidly consuming the works of his favorite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey began to shape a writing career of his own. Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, he started writing poetry and short stories. "The film work gave me insight into character development, the acting classes helped me understand motivation...All of it goes hand in hand," Eric explains. He joined the IBWA (International Black Writers and Artists), participated in their development workshops, and became a recipient of the IBWA SEED Scholarship to attend UCLA's Creative Writing classes. In 1994 his first published short story, "Thirteen," appeared in the IBWA's River Crossing: Voices of the Diaspora-An Anthology of the International Black Experience. A second short story, "Days Gone By," was published in the magazine A Place to Enter.

With those successes behind him, Eric Jerome Dickey decided to fine-tune some of his earlier work and developed a screenplay called "Cappuccino." "Cappuccino" was directed and produced by Craig Ross, Jr. and appeared in coffee houses around the Los Angeles area. In February 1998, "Cappuccino" made its local debut during the Pan African Film Festival at the Magic Johnson Theater in Los Angeles.

Short stories, though, didn't seem to fulfill Eric Jerome Dickey's creative yearnings. Eric says, "I'd set out to do a ten-page story and it would go on for three hundred pages." So Eric kept writing and reading and sending out query letters for his novels for almost three years until he finally got an agent. "Then a door opened," Eric says. "And I put my foot in before they could close it." And that door has remained opened, as Eric Jerome Dickey's novels have placed him on the map as one of the best writers of contemporary urban fiction.

Eric Jerome Dickey's book signing tours for Sister, Sister; Friends and Lovers; Milk in My Coffee; Cheaters; and Liar's Game took him from coast to coast and helped propel each of these novels to #1 on the "Blackboard Bestsellers List." Cheaters was named "Blackboard Book of the Year" in 2000. In June 2000, Eric Jerome Dickey celebrated the French publication of Milk in My Coffee (Cafe Noisette) by embarking on a book tour to Paris. Soon after, Milk in My Coffee became a bestseller in France. Eric Jerome Dickey's novels, Chasing Destiny, Liar's Game, Between Lovers, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, Drive Me Crazy, Genevieve, Naughty or Nice, Sleeping with Strangers, Waking with Enemies, and Pleasure have all earned him the success of a spot on The New York Times bestseller list. Liar's Game, Thieves' Paradise, The Other Woman, and Genevieve have also given Dickey the added distinction of being nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. In 2006, he was honored with the awards for Best Contemporary Fiction and Author of the Year (Male) at the 2006 African American Literary Award Show. In 2008, Eric was nominated for Storyteller of the Year at the 1st annual ESSENCE Literary Awards. In January 2001, Eric Jerome Dickey was a contributor to New American Library's anthology Got To Be Real: Four Original Love Stories, also a Blackboard Bestseller. He also had a story entitled “Fish Sanwich” appear in the anthology Mothers and Sons. In June 2002, Dickey contributed to Black Silk: A Collection of African American Erotica (Warner Books) as well as to Riots Beneath the Baobab (published by Inte

This book is far from being a “good” book. The storyline is interesting and the characters are well developed, but the attention to detail ruins it all. The author puts in so many details that you forget what is going on. For example anytime that someone is in a car, he lists every street and neighborhood that the character passes. He doesn’t usually describe the area, just lists the streets. Then when the character arrives every store in the area is listed. It is almost as if the author is showing how much he knows about the city. In some cases the descriptions are good, but more often than not they are very distracting. To make matters worse, many of his details are inaccurate. For example, all of the characters are assassins are very well versed in firearms (of course). The author lists make and model number of every weapon used or carried, yet refers to the magazine as a “clip” every time. Anyone trained in firearms to the extent that these people are would know that there is a difference between a clip and a magazine and would not confuse them. Perhaps the most annoying error was when the author describes two GMC pickups and tells you that one is an F150 and the other a F350 (Those are Ford pickups). It was not necessary to tell us the make and model, but if you are going to you should at least get it right. I cannot recommend this book.

Gideon Rocks...

...and so does Eric Jerome Dickey! Like all the novels in the Gideon series (Sleeping With Strangers, Waking With Enemies, Dying for Revenge), Dickey's latest is a first-rate story; an explosive, nerve-tingling page-turner.

"Resurrecting Midnight" follows everyone's favorite assassin-for-hire, Gideon. His latest assignment, a result of a debt that has to be paid, takes him to South America to obtain and secure a package. A package that is wanted by many. A package that many will kill for. A package that many will die for. A package that is now in the possession of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a team of ruthless mercenaries led by an assassin simply known as The Beast.

Also, Gideon is still dealing with X, Y, Z, a grifter named Arizona and a ghost from his past.

From the beginning, readers are pulled in to a world of death and darkness. "Resurrecting Midnight" has all the right ingredients. With a blockbuster plot and wonderful writing, this story speeds along like a runaway freight train, not once struggling to entertain. Intriguing and unsavory characters, methodical pacing from chapter to chapter (or capitulo a capitulo), dangerous secrets and exotic locations add to the intensity. Full of surprises, suspense, thrills and action, "Resurrecting Midnight" is a must read.

Dickey is at the top of his game and clearly puts on display his talent. Somebody, please, give this man a star on the literary walk of fame!

The fourth book in the Gideon series and for some reason, it took me about 200 pages (damn near 1/2 the book) to really get into this one. The first three books in this series were great, loved them. But I think because I took so much time between reading the first three and this one, I lost momentum when it came to reading these books in the voice of Gideon and in the voice of his adversary. Not to get too spoilery with it, but Gideon and Arizona are back again (and yes, she is still a messy bitch) with the help of Hawks and others to try and secure a briefcase from a bunch of mercs calling themselves The Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse. There is more to it than that, but you'll have to read the previous books to really get an understanding of the dynamic not only on the Gideon side of things but also on the side of the Horsemen.
What I will say that this read as if I was watching an action movie, I mean really, assassins, car chases, exploding limos, motorcycle gun battles this had it all. All with a South American backdrop. You can tell that EJD really went to these places he describes in his book, the amount of detail can be both great for setting the mood but also it can be very annoying the amount of detail he chooses to give us. But I guess if he didn't, it wouldn't have felt as authentic. I liked this installment, but maybe one day on a reread I'll love more. The last book in the series Finding Gideon will definitely be read before the year is up.

Since I'm familiar with EJD books I knew what to expect with Resurrecting Midnight, and I got just that. The fourth, and maybe not so final, installment to the Gideon serious rounded out nicely. All of the stories that I cared about had some resolution, and the 'major' plot line (being Gideon's parentage) left an avenue for more books to be written in this series. Books that I undoubtedly will read because, let's face it, EJD novels are a guilty pleasure I'm not giving up anytime soon.

The writing was... well he could use a better editor. Some things were repetitious for no reason, and other things were flat out wrong. And as much as I like reading how an author sets up a scene, his details about Argentina would only add confusion for a reader who's never been there before. There were just too many street/place names that muddled the little imagery he was giving us in the book. I also don't like how authors name drop celebrities and popular culture when it's unnecessary; I think it gives the moment a cheap, dated feel to it.

Either way, I'm a fan of Gideon and have been since Sleeping With Strangers. I'm interested to see where EJD will take this series next.

Had it on audiobook...didn't even finish it...the guy's voice is great (he's the narrator of The First 48 - if you watch that show on A&E)...too much detail, boring characters.

Ok, so I got SOME of my answers! SOME...not all. Thelma/Catherine IS the mother!! But is Midnight really the father? I was so surprised to discover so much about Midnight, didn't think he would be a relevant character, but now I want more. Glad it wasn't a long, drawn out thing for him and Gideon to finally connect. And his reaction was not surprising but Gideon's approach was. Maybe The Beast is his real father and was in cohorts with Thelma to get rid of Midnight? (Not mad that Midnight killed The Beast the way he did tho.) There's more to Thelma/Catherine than what she's confessing up to.

I see a shootout coming between Hawks and Raven or Hawks and Arizona. It's past due because I STILL don't understand his obsession to Arizona. Four books in and I STILL don't understand why Gideon has such his feelings for her. She's not worth all that attention.

Great read!

I always feel a little more knowledge after reading one of EJD's book. Very detailed. I felt what the characters were feeling and saw what they seen.

Just finished 646 pages (large print) of this book and never plan on reading another one by Dickey. This story went on ad infinitum and then solved absolutely nothing. What a waste of my time. Apparently, it has been designed like a never ending soap opera.

Don't think I have ever been this disappointed in a book I have read!

While I LOVE the Gideon Series, I have to admit that my loyalty has gone from Gideon to Shotgun. That man right there, big, strong, street smart, more than a willing student AND a light personality. #♥_Shotgun

I am an avid EJD fan. Overall I enjoyed the book. I was a little disappointed at the ending or non-ending. I expected more. This one was not as enjoyable as the first three in the Gideon series.

WOW, just WOW. EJD didn’t disappoint in the fourth installment of the Gideon series (Sleeping with Strangers, Waking with Enemies, Dying for Revenge). This time, when international assassin, Gideon is approached by his former lover and grifter Arizona for a job offer in Miami things go awry and he becomes indebted to Scamz, her lover who saved his life. The job takes Gideon to Argentina to locate and get the “package” that contains material that another group would kill to obtain and protect. This group, aka the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (the Beast, Medianoche, Senor Rodriguez, and Senorita Raven) is a deadly force to be reckoned with.

What happens throughout the 442 pages is a roller coaster ride that introduces the readers to some characters that scratch, claw, lie, cheat and kill to get what they want. I really liked the introduction of Shotgun and it was great to see Hawks (assassin and Gideon’s lover) and their leader, Konstantin in action.

In midst of it all, Gideon learns some truths about Catherine/Thelma (former prostitute) the woman who raised him that takes him into a tailspin and makes him question whether Medianoche (Midnight) could be his father. And if that’s the truth could he kill him.

There are very tense and emotional moments in this roller coaster of a non-stop thriller that makes you see just a glimpse of humanity in the characters which didn’t last that long. I know, no time to be liked in these novels. Anyway, EJD’s description puts you in the various locations so you can see, hear, smell, taste and touch everything the characters are experiencing.

Some readers may find that EJD went heavy on the description but I didn’t mind because I got lost in the locations (slums, opulence of some places, clubs, etc.), the storyline, the dialogue and the action. And of course, I love EJD’s history lessons and back stories and that he makes you reach for that dictionary – I certainly did on a few occasions – lol

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this non-stop thriller of a novel from start to finish. The twists and turns were quite surprising without spoiling it for those who haven’t read it. I can’t wait to crack open the fifth installment, Finding Gideon, that’s sitting on my book shelf right now! YES!

Two thumbs way up! A must read!

Another brilliant piece of work by Eric Jerome Dickey. This one touched my emotional side more than the first three in this series because it ventured deeper into Gideon’s past. It tapped into the sore spot of Gideon’s heart and soul. I thought the DNA box would continue to be a mystery through the book just to keep the momentum going but the truth was revealed, which opened up a whole ‘nother world for Gideon. I wanted to grab Gideon and hug him into oblivion for a few days just so he could recharge himself. Wish I could be his Hawks. Lol Yeah, I have a little fictional crush on Gideon. I blame EJD for that one. The battle at the end gave me heart palpitations!!!

The way EJD sets up a scene, with such detail, makes me believe that I am right the on the other side of the water with the characters.....not just reading about them being over there.

I could go on and on about this series but it’s taking way from my previous reading time. Headed to read the final book in this series, “Finding Gideon”.

Thanks for another great read EJD! Hugs

The more I read this series, the better it gets. But there is always a twisted plot that leaves unanswered questions! Why leave Midnight alive? Is Arizona conning Gideon with Scamz? Is Catherine and the boys safe from Midnight...and from Gideon? Why does Midnight trust Lady Ortiz and Senorita Raven? Guess I will find out in the next book.
