Jennifer is the beautiful hearing-impaired child who may become a pawn between the man and the woman she needs the most. I wanted to slap both these book characters!! Laurie for being so "fiery" and Drake for putting up with her crap. And then he runs out on her for an entire month and comes back like nothing??!!

These older SB books are not bad reads. Nothing like her newer, suspenseful reads. I like to dip in now and again.

We have our arrogant hero.

Lauri is a dedicated young teacher for the deaf. Her past conceals a wound still unhealed, her present is a facade, and she uses her career to hide her loneliness. Drake, daytime TV's most popular star, has two heartaches--the daughter he believes will never have a normal life and the dead wife he can't forget.

Liked the heroine. She took no shit from him. He was a bit of an opinionated dick.

The daughter was sweet.

Overall an enjoyable enough read.

Eloquent Silence by Sandra Brown is 2014 Grand Central Publishing digital release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Drake is a widowed soap opera actor and the father of a young girl named Jennifer who is hearing impaired. When a young teacher named Lauri is asked to meet Drake to discuss Jennifer's needs, the two get off on the wrong foot. Drake knows he needs to connect with his daughter and do the right thing by her so she can live a productive life and Lauri seems to be the best solution for his problem. He talks her into taking the job but Lauri has no idea how her life will change once she steps into Drake's world.
This book was originally published in it's first edition way back in 1982 and was reissued a couple of times since then. Now this wonderful story is available in digital format. While Lauri is a serious young woman who could not care less about Drake's popularity, she does find Drake attractive. But, because of his arrogance and aggressiveness she is put off by him and is determined to focus on Jennifer and her needs. Drake has had a rough go of it with his wife's death and a demanding career. Lauri is convinced Drake is still in love with his wife and he only sees her as a temporary fling with no emotional attachments. The situation turns into a comedy of errors when Lauri tries to hide the fact she is living with Drake while she works with Jennifer, and poignant progress with Jennifer on top of the hot and cold romance between Drake and Lauri. The author does a great job of highlighting the challenges of living with a handicap and the importance of teaching those born with these impediments to learn quickly how to adjust. Lauri was a great teacher and it was hard for Drake at first, but eventually he sees he has to be involved in Jennifer's life and Lauri's methods are working. There were laugh out loud moments as a small lie turns into a full blown circus.
As I have said before when reviewing these older contemporary romances being published in digitial format, there are some things that appear dated. This one had that feel to it at times but mostly it has managed to stand the test of time. Drake's attitude is one that many romance novel hereos had during the 80's and he comes off a little too aggressive and too confident in his success. Other than that this short book is still a great read. I do hope more of Sandra Brown's back list will find their way into digital format. One way to see that happen would be to support this book and leaving a review on Amazon or anywhere digital books are sold. This is a great way to read some of Sandra's earlier work. This one gets 4 stars.

Lauri tidak menyangka bhw anak asuhnya yg tuna rungu ternyata memiliki ayah seorang aktor televisi kondang. Setelah melalui perdebatan, Drake menyetujui pola asuhan yg diajukan Lauri.

Hal inilah yg membantu rating nilai yg saya berikan. Tampaknya pada awal thn 1980an, author senang membuat kisah romance dgn hero/heroine yg pny type dramatis. Untunglah yg di buku ini tidak separah buku Silken Web The Silken Web by Sandra Brown dan Heaven's Price Heaven's Price - Sang Penari by Sandra Brown .

Ugh, I didn't know this was a reprint of an old Sandra Brown book. Her writing has changed so much for the better since Eloquent Silence was first published in the 80's. The only redeeming part of the plot was the heroine- a widow- who taught sign language. This was a disappointing romance without Brown's usual dialogue and descriptions. Not the same quality as French Silk, or Brown's later suspense type books. Don't bother unless you want a totally mindless read about a tutor whose student has a soap opera star as a parent. It has a heroine who refuses to have sex until married-twice!, cares deeply about her parents and their beliefs, yet she married earlier in her life without them attending. I found the book to be dated- Example: comments about using the term Ms., or sentences like this: She was amazed and thrilled at the mysterious moisture in her body when thinking about Drake ( the soap star). I am paraphrasing but there were a lot of stupid comments like that or dialogue that just seemed to use a thesaurus.

very old school category romance. setting aside the fact in this day and age the guy would get busted for sexual harrasment for the way he treated his daughters live-in tutor (he actually smacked her ass pre relationship at one point as in "fetch me a cup of coffee sweetcheeks" slap of the ass) and his 70s pornstar mustache... it actually is a rather engaging little story. their cute-meet, her work with his daughter it all kinda just works. but he is an jackass so...

When Lauri agreed to consider the personal tutor position for a hearing-impaired girl named Jennifer who was part of her school, she never realized that the father was none other than actor Drake Rivington. Their initial meeting doesn't go over very well, but when Lauri puts aside her frustration with Drake and agrees everything changes.

Drake just wants the best for his daughter. As a widower who loved his wife, Drake has no intention of putting his heart out there again. Lauri though wakes every ounce of passion he has though and seeing her with his daughter has Drake wondering if he can have a second chance.

Fascinating story.. I thought the way the author was able to describe the communication between Jennifer and learning to sign was very visual. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, I loved that Drake was a bit of a egotistical male and Lauri is so sweet, Lauri though has no problem putting him in his place.

I have come to adore Sandra Brown and her books!

Until recently, I'd read only a couple of her romantic suspense books, and they were fantastic, but I became distracted by other books before I could read the rest. I recently won one of her books on a goodreads giveaway, and now I'm hooked!
Why am I hooked you ask?
For me, her books are like chocolate... Stress relieving, glorious, rich, almost-sinful, pure reading pleasure. Also, Ms. Brown is a generous author; the book I won came with an extra title also written by her , plus cool bookmarks.
The thoughtfulness of that gesture meant a lot to me.
So now you know why I'm hooked.
And why I'm on a mission to read them all. :)

Thank you Sandra Brown!

When Lauri Parrish is asked to teach a hearing impaired four-year-old American Sign Language, she thought it would be the perfect job. She has second thoughts when she learns that Jennifer's father is Soap Opera Star Drake Sloan. But since Drake will stay in New York for his job and Lauri and Jennifer will live in New Mexico, Lauri agrees. What she doesn't expect is Drake arriving in New Mexico on extended leave from his job and moving in with them.

This story was written in 1982 and feels very dated. Lauri is afraid her reputation will be ruined if people find out she is living in the same house as Drake. The heroine also jumps to all kinds of wild conclusions about Drake and his past. She believes he still loves his deceased wife and can't possibly love her. I was totally bored with that. The saving aspect of this book was the storyline of teaching young Jennifer to communicate with others. My rating: 2 Stars.

What a sweet story. A young teacher of deaf children is hired by an actor to live with and teach his three year old deaf daughter. He owns a home in rural New Mexico where he wants her to live with little Jennifer. She is having great success with helping Jennifer open up to her and become fluent in sign language when there are complications in her relationship with the father. Interesting information about teaching the deaf and, of course, about human relationships.

ELOQUENT SILENCE
By Sandra Brown

Copyright 1982 by Sandra Brown
Publisher: Warner Books, Inc.

Sandra Brown has written a beautiful love story with three beautiful characters. It is fast reading and good for escape.

Lauri is a “goody two-shoes” teacher of the deaf who becomes the private tutor of adorable Jennifer, a toddler who is hearing impaired. Jennifer is daughter of a sexy soap opera star who likes to bate Lauri. Of course Drake and Lauri fall in love, but not without complications and miscommunications.

As a fan of soap operas, I enjoyed the characterization of Drake, but I fell totally in love with Jennifer. Ms. Brown wrote her with tender sensitivity. Lauri I liked, but she felt luke-warm to me. The plot was sweet and simple, just what I needed right now.

If you like romance novels, this book will satisfy your appetite. If you need a romantic fantasy to escape real life, this novel is just what the doctor ordered! Lots of sexual love scenes.

I won this book at Goodreads.com. This is a First Reader book.

I have read many of Sandra Brown's books and this one is just as good as the others!! WOW, this author is fantastic!

This time she writes a love story, passion filled, falling in love again.....

Lauri is a young teacher for the deaf. She has a past wound from love that can't be healed, so she thinks. She takes on a job to teach a little deaf girl in her home. Her dad is the one and only good looking hunk tv star Drake. Women fall all over him and Lauri trys to do her best not to follow!

He moves Lauri and his beautiful blond curly haired daughter into a huge expensive home in New Mexico. Lauri is given a car, high pay, everything she needs to raise and teach his little girl. But one day, Drake shows up at the home and Lauri finds herself falling in love again, but does she want to take a chance with love again and get hurt? This is an excellent read.......Lauri teaches his daughter so much of the sign of the deaf, etc. Drake is so proud of his daughter's abilities to learn so fast........does he have a past secret that will hurt Lauri?

Oh a must read!

Eloquent Silence by Sandra Brown
Laurie has agreed to teach his daughter at his home and take her out of the institution she was placed in because he couldn't do it all himself an be a soap opera actor.
She, at dinner, tells Drake about her husband and never wants to talk about it again.
Jennifer is the little girl and they try many things to get her to open up and understand although she is deaf.
She knows she can't love him because he's still in love with his ex-wife.
The girls have traveled to the family home in New Mexico and is a very nice 2 story chalet type house. Mountains on one side and very spacious rooms.
She becomes friends with the woman next door and her two small children.
He surprised her in the bathtub by showing up, he went to make a meal for them and she went to get dressed.
They are surprised when her parents come to visit and stay for a few days, at his house.

Oldie but goodie. At times it was dated but other than that it was a very sweet story. I loved Jennifer the little deaf girl. She was too cute. Drake was a great hero and quite seductive. :) This is a good read.

My read was from the original publication as a Candlelight Ecstasy Romance. I may have read the reprint years ago but it didn't seem familiar as I read the book.

I was given this book as an add-on in a giveaway - I had entered the draw for a recent book by Sandra Brown, and she sent this on as an extra, stressing that it was an old book, in a completely different style. I liked her recent thriller, so tried reading this, but it really wasn't my cup of tea - romance never has been. I am surprised she would want to spread it in these days, sexual harassment galore! Also, how likely is it that a parent today would part from their child at a young age, first to go to boarding school (a pre-school child!), then to live in a completely different state? Not so very likely.

The whole story is completely predictable (yes, maybe that's one reason I never read romances - I'm absolutely not the right guinea pig for this one), I didn't like or find the characters interesting, and some of the 'facts' about being hearing impaired didn't seem right to me (totally layman's perspective, but a 2018 one).

Wouldn't recommend it to anyone who likes her recent books, even if they like romance - don't want to give anyone the impression that Sandra Brown condones sexual harassment - I really don't think she does, but this book might make you wonder. Try her thrillers instead.

Sandra Brown is one of my favourite authors, and before reading Eloquent Silence, I did not even know that she wrote Romance Novels. Well, unfortunately the first one that I read was Eloquent Silence, and I have never disliked a romance novel as much as I disliked this one. I tried to keep in mind that this book was a reprint from the 1980’s so times were a tad different but this book was cringeworthy. There was very little character development, and the end seemed as though they were trying to squeeze a whole book of character development in one chapter. The end was very rushed and very open ended. The male treats his love interest like a live in prostitute, suggests having sex in front of his sleeping, deaf child and constantly sexually harasses the female love interest by smacking her ass or “Fanny” as they refer to or kissing/touching her against her will. There is even a point in the book where the male forces himself on the female love interest, and even though she is consistently saying “no I do not want to have sexual with you” the male forces himself on her. Not exactly a sexy scenario.

This book reads more as a Stockholm’s syndrome romance then one of love. I was very unimpressed. I think I’ll stick to her thrillers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Okay dokey folks...I've finally gotten to cleaning up my room a bit & oh yeah..I went to a library book sale so I'm now going thru my piles of TBR books in my bedroom. My goal is to try & at least get thru 1 bagful by the end of the month.
So I'm doing same writer binge reads/series binge reads & just random reads in b/w to break it up.
(plus, I still have my ever growing pile of library book holds when they come in)

I like this writer. She typically writes suspense romance. This one was an older book which was strictly romance. So some of it was dated. But my theme (w/her other one i'll review next) was deaf characters.
I liked that as I always enjoy reading books w/diverse characters.
Jennifer is a deaf child & Lauri is her teacher who ultimately ends up in a relationship with the father. I liked Jennifer & the writer did a good job of making her believable.
It was interesting to learn a little bit about the learning process for small deaf children.
Good, quick, easy story.
