Back in 2012 I made the very pleasant acquaintance of Josh Lanyon. Well, we never met personally but since I read
Dangerous Ground I made sure to check out his huge backlist. Lanyon delivers time and again with the exception of a couple minor slips. Old Poison, however, is neither a masterpiece nor a failure. I enjoyed it but it didn't rock my little world. As usual, the writing was pretty much flawless (though the editing wasn't stellar at all) but I had a couple issues.

"You mentioned something about it being an aphrodisiac."
Taylor extended the bottle.
"Feeling insecure?"
"You complaining?"
Taylor's sexy mouth quirked. "No way."

I think I'm having a little mental beef here. I know this is a series of novellas and that's exactly my problem. If I could look at the big picture here…absorb the entire series as a full-length novel, I think it would have worked out better for me.

Relationship-wise Tyler and Will haven't progressed far enough yet and that's somehow disappointing. They spend quite a bit of time separated. Another issue of mine may have been authentic or real or whatever you want to call it but I did not particularly care for that rather huge focus on And Will still having a distraction I did not need either. Also, the secretiveness regarding was actually more annoying than entertaining. But of course it served the purpose perfectly and led to some good thrills. I really enjoyed the suspense in Old Poison but when I look at it from the romance angle (I mean romance not sex), then it left me wanting. There are still too many insecurities that might put a strain on their budding relationship; unaddressed issues that need to be discussed. And what's up with Tyler's past? While I was waiting for a little interesting chat between Will and Tyler, the latter was obviously too embarrassed to talk about it?? That chat didn't happen. *makes pouty face*

Anyhoo, I got the impression it might get bumpy along the way. I'm on to book #3 because I'm determined to finish this series.

Okay, I'm warming up to the series. I'm loving the action and suspense/mystery. I'm not completely sold on these guys as a couple though. I know they've been partners for four years, but as a reader, I want to experience the build up between them. Not just thrown into it.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Not living up to its potential*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

Re-read: 19.04.2018
It's not a bad series. Not at all and there's huge potential, it's just that there so much missing for me for the book to feel complete. I can't feel the connection between the characters and I completely understand why Taylor is scared Will is only with him out of guilt. That's what I feel as well. Or that Taylor wants more than Will. Or something like that. Anyway, Taylor doesn't talk about his time in Japan which is coming to bite him in the ass; someone is out for revenge. Will and Taylor is currently re-teamed, so Will is working with his ex hours away, while Taylor is playing bodyguard/babysitter. Will is terrified something is gonna happen to Taylor because no one is more invested in Taylor's safety than him. He has a tendency to blame himself is something happens to Taylor. Overall, it has so much potential and it sucks that it's not living up to it.

“You're acting jealous and insecure and irrational.”
Taylor weighed his words, but he had gone this far, he might as well shoot his wad. Will apparently thought he was acting like a queen as it was. He said, “That's because I've got more invested in this relationship than you. We both know the bottom line is I care more for you than you do for me.”
Will's profile could have been cut from stone. “I'm not even going to answer that.”

Other characters:
Riley, Will's five-year-old German shepherd.
↦ Lieutenant Commander David Bradley, Will's temporary partner and ex.
Denise Varga, Taylor's temporary partner.
↦ Assistant Field Officer Director Greg Cooper, Taylor and Will's boss.

Taylor walked out from between the gas pumps, and Will got out of his car. He went around the front and didn't care who was watching as Taylor walked into his arms.

First read review:
⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Where's the connection?*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

We're back with Special Agents Taylor ‘Tay’ MacAllister (32) and Will Brandt (still don't know how old he is...?) and this time the past comes to hunt Taylor. ‘Old ghosts’ that Taylor doesn't want Will to know about. Though, it's more like he doesn't want to talk about it. However, not telling Will, will put Taylor's life in danger and time is running out...
If Will stopped believing in him, if Will didn't care about him anymore—it was like losing his compass, having his mooring torn away, like being lost at sea and no star to guide him.

Overall, the story was just as meh as the previous one. There's nothings special about the story, nor the characters as they are kinda forgettable. I'm still having trouble really connecting with them as characters and as a couple. I'll try one more book in the series and if things still end up feeling the same, then I'm done with the series.
“You think I'm with you out of guilt?”
“No, you ass. Of course not. I just mean—”
“You're a nut, MacAllister. I'm with you because I love you.”
There it was, out. Three little words. Three of the most common words in the world, but string them together and they were more powerful than any warrant, any extradition papers, or even treaty. Stronger than any magical spell. Had he really never said them aloud to Taylor?

Happy Birthday to Taylor!
SPOILERS BELOW.

In this book it’s Taylor’s birthday and it starts with seemingly a very sweet, loving gesture by his boyfriend, William. Awwwww. Turns out, William is actually quite the wiener. He says things to Taylor like how he wishes they didn’t start off a relationship. Like, c’mon. That’s a little mean, isn’t it? Taylor has seemingly dropped his playboy ways and is nothing is not completely committed and willing to create a life with William, mostly to suit William’s selfish needs.

David Bradley.
He was mentioned in the first book as Will’s boyfriend at the time, but they broke up once Taylor was shot. It was getting serious between them. So, in this book they’re separated and assigned other partners in other cities. Wouldn’t you know it? Somehow Will is partnered up with David Bradley. Don’t get me wrong, I love this kind of drama. I eat that shit for breakfast. But man, Will was already walking on thin ice for me. So basically in their relationship, it consists basically of Taylor being a perfect boyfriend and waiting around for Will and being caring and understanding, and Will being a selfish jerk. He goes out to dinner with DB and you can tell that it makes Taylor uncomfortable. But who cares, right? Not Will. Maybe he’s not cheating, but if it makes your boyfriend uncomfortable, maybe you shouldn’t do it.
Oh, but wait. At one point in the story, David Bradley asks if he can kiss Will goodbye… Will sheepishly laughs and then agrees and they suck face.

Lesson of this book: William is a god damn jerk.

3.8 Stars - A luxurious gift, old sins and tender words - whole-cozy!

Book #2

Old Poison is the second part in the audiobook Volume #1 - Armed and Dangerous: Four Dangerous Ground Novellas.
I liked the serie start in #1 - Dangerous Ground (3.7 stars) and started to listening to this second book as soon as I finished the first one.

As I wrote in my last 100% update to the first book: Ohmygodiloveeverythingwrittenbyjoshlanyon !!

***********************************************************

Special Agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security, Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt have been partners and best friends for three years. They just started a hot intense love affair a month ago after an adventure in the woods (book #1)

***********************************************************

It's Taylor's birthday (32) and he is luxuriously celebrated with a nice and appreciated gift (and a nice restaurant visits with good Japanese food) from his lover Will. The rest of the celebration takes place through a personal physical gift from Will, a few hours later, in the bedroom. ~ Smut smex yummy!
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

During the day has also a strange parcel arrived with yet another gift. A precious bottle of alcohol, but without the senders name. A gift related to Japan. A place where Taylor was stationed eight years ago but still don't want to talk about.

Quite soon pulls it up into a "storm in the romantic serenity" and several unpleasant events occur. Taylor and Will misunderstand each other and they fuss sometimes, it hurts in their hearts, their emotions run high, and there is still uncertainty from both their sides.

....And of course, there are also dangerous hazards and vengeful villains. Our two tough action heroes must once again demonstrate their talents.

***********************************************************

A three and half hours listening...
Once again we can enjoy this love tale with a very attractive deep male raspy voice from the great narrator Adrian Bisson.
Five stars to Mr Bisson a second time.

***********************************************************

As always in Lanyon's books, it means actually something when something is said. These men are not first class charmers who fling themselves with silly platitudes and smeared romantic words. ~ Jeez, so amazingly good it feels in the heart when what we are waiting for happens. When something important is said in lovely words.
"You're a nut, MacAllister. I'm with you because I love you."
There it was, out. Three little words. Three of the most common words in the world, but string them together and they were more powerful than any warrant, any extradition papers, or even treaty. Stronger than any magical spell. Had he really never said them aloud to Taylor? Something in the ringing silence that followed made him think he maybe hadn't.’

I can not help but compare with two other well-known agent-heroes, two colleagues which also becomes intensely hot lovers. Male tough fearless men with muscles and dark voices.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

And? I think...
There are similarities, but when it comes to personalities are these two men as well in comparison. The disadvantage of this Dangerous Ground series is obvious that each book is only a novella story. This means that it isn't as much time to build up and let it grown emotionally between these men, etc before the last page is read.

***********************************************************

... Anyway, I like these guys and I'll at once throw myself with joy to the next installment (#3 - Blood Heat).

Taylor and Will are now yet another addictive enjoying lovely gay love couple to follow with interest.

I LIKE - Oh yes, strong emotions and interesting hot manly bulls

I like Will and Taylor a lot, and I enjoyed getting to learn a little bit more about Taylor's past. Taylor is definitely my favorite of the two, and I thought the tension between them given their history was believable and well done. Will did sort of annoy me at times. It's obvious that he loves Taylor, but he seemed to struggle with the idea of it a lot, and then seemed surprised that Taylor believed that Will wasn't as invested in the relationship as Taylor was.

Interesting case, and I'm definitely curious for more!

The second book of the series, in which:

- We meet David F. Bradley

- Will proves himself eminently smackable, which will be his distinguishing trait for much of the rest of the series

and

- Taylor does yet another variation on that thing he does best

This is the place in the series where I really began to get sucked in. As a mystery, it's... okay. It's fine. Whatever. As an exploration of a new relationship, from friends/work partners to lovers, I found it irresistible.

I loved the alternating POV, because Will and Taylor -- despite their superficial similarities as young, ambitious, hot-shot federal agents -- are profoundly different in their approaches to life and love. It was fascinating to see how two people in love could manage to bump heads and frustrate each other so often. And to see also how they worked hard to compromise and accommodate each other and learn to listen. Well, begin to learn to listen. I've read the entire series, so I know they have a long road ahead of them. Keep working at it, guys. You've got a lot of ground to cover.

Not my favorite of the series, but still a good read. Plus, they need to be read in sequence to watch the relationship unfold. It's all one big story, and it's one of my favorites.

Usually when I change old ratings after a reread, it’s to lower them after asking myself what I saw in that book at the time to justify the extra star.
This time I’m asking myself why I thought this book didn’t deserve that extra star. Actually, I’m pretty sure I know why and that scene still bothers me, but now I can see it more...fairly, I think. Where I reacted purely on an emotional level last time, now I wasn’t taken by surprise and I could see all the nuances and put it in context. That’s what maturity and old age can do for you. ;)
Also, it doesn’t feel right to give less than 4 stars to anything with Taylor in it. There’s a limit to what maturity and old age can do for you.

Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister survived book one, “Dangerous Ground,” only to be plunged fairly quickly into another mysterious mess. At least the author doesn’t torture us, (much), as to their feelings for each other...and she doesn’t give us much time for deeply pondering the shifting nature of these men’s relationship. Creepy threats against Taylor may or may not relate to his past, and blood is spilled. Josh Lanyon can certainly pack tons of depth of feelings into one short novella. That can surely be attributed to her gifts as a writer. She doesn’t waste words, zeroing in on settings, characters, and personalities, so that the reader gets it all quickly. I love these characters. They remind me of Ty and Zane from the Abigail Roux Cut and Run series. another series that anyone that likes m/m romances should read. On to book #3, and I hope that Taylor and Will’s relationship will continue to grow.

As in the ebook format, the audiobook series is a bit addictive. Easy listening...

ORIGINAL REVIEW - September 2, 2012
3.5 stars

Josh Lanyon's series are so easy to consume. I've found that as one-offs they're just ok, but read as a whole, they're really entertaining and the characters so likable.

"Old Poison" was a much better read than the first book "Dangerous Ground". Will and Taylor are settling into their relationship...and even the insecurities and questions that exist between them in this blossoming pairing make this the book I can better connect to emotionally.

The storyline, which also gives us a glimpse into Taylor's past, was exciting and engaging.

I'm loving Will & Taylor, by the way...

On to book 3...

The second book in this series. I did enjoy it but slightly less than the previous one.

It's Taylor's birthday and he and Will plan to spend it together. Not everything, however, goes so well. Taylor is returning to field work but it turns out that his partner will not be Will. Will, on the other hand, is assigned to help his ex-lover whom Taylor is very jealous of. Meanwhile, Taylor gets an unusual parcel - wine with a cobra. Which may be related to Taylor's mysterious past in Japan.

I couldn't find as much involvement between Will and Tylor as in the previous book. I would love to see them both working on a case instead of being away from each other and keeping secrets. Yes, this is definitely what is missing from this story: Will and Tylor working together on a case related to Tylor's past. Again, this is a rather short story, I wish it is longer and more developed.

I still quite enjoyed this book. I will probably read another one in this series but not necessarily just now.

Set a month on from the events in book one (Dangerous Ground), Taylor and Will are now navigating their recently altered relationship from best friends and work partners, to friends, partners and lovers.

On top of all the personal adjustments this big change in their relationship entails, Taylor also faces a new threat to his well-being that seems to be linked to his mysterious time spent stationed overseas eight years earlier.

I wasn't sure what to make of this one. The crime/mystery portion was a bit far-fetched, IMHO, and although I'm really liking Taylor, I'm finding it difficult to trust Will's feelings for him (after all, actions speak louder than words), and therefore I'm not all that invested in their burgeoning relationship (yet).

So this is the second installment to the Will x. Taylor "Dangerous Ground" novel[ette?:], and I was disappointed. Seriously.

I mean, I wanted very badly to love Josh Lanyon - I can't even count how many people have freaked out when I say I haven't read [much of:] his stuff. But this ... this is kind of why.

The relationship between Will and Taylor is just too - HARD. They struggle every second of it and it just seems like bloody torture. It doesn't even seem like they even LIKE each other. There's little to no dynamic at all. And I got SO FREAKIN' TIRED of hearing how much easier it had been between Will and Bradley, and how he kind of wished they were still back together, how Bradley still wanted him too, how blah blah blah. I mean, it was so repetitive and redundant that by about page 75-80, even *I* was set to say to hell with Taylor - Will, go get it on with Bradley just to get those stupid wants and needs to shut the fuck up. Taylor is obviously not the one you want.

WHY were Taylor and Will such good friends, such good partners? Oh, there was enough of explanation - 'they had always been on the same lines, etc etc' and yet no proof. Not once. The few times they were actually together they seemed more like friends with benefits than anything else - hardly talking during the day, doing their own things, getting it on at night, wake up, repeat.

The plot was interesting but fickle, would have been a LOT better if some of the Will/Bradley longing and "rightness" was taken out and more of the actual plot-planning and action was put in.

This is a review of an audio book

What is it about Josh Lanyon's books that I can't get enough of them!

As Will and Taylor's story continues, they grow on me even more. I love these two hot masculine agents together! They take their romance slow and still keep some secrets from each other. But they are willing to take the next step in their relationship and I oohed and aahed at the end of this instalment.

The mystery was not my favourite here though. Taylor can't seem to stay away from trouble and it did feel at times as if Will needed a close call to realise some important things for himself. But even though I've gotten over my first audio high and become more of my usual picky self, it is still irrelevant - Adrian Bisson's voice more than made up for it all.

Again, highly recommend this series on audio!

Audiobook narrated by Derrick MacClain is FABULOUS!! It’s totally binge-worthy since it’s part of a bundle containing books 1-5 in the series!!

I’m enjoying how this relasuis developing and the mysteries that are popping up.

This one deals with Taylor’s secretive stint in Japan.

My rec? Just gobble these novellas up!

Hmm I really have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I literally stayed up all night to finish it because I was so enthralled by the story. Thankfully, it's not a very long book. On the other hand, I am still not sure of how I feel about both main characters.

This one takes place a couple of months after the events in Dangerous Ground. Will and Taylor are together but not everything is going smoothly. Both are teamed up with new workig partners and in Will's case it's his ex David. Taylor gets the feeling somethimes that he's more invested in their relationship than Will. And then there's the strange present Taylor gets send to him for his birthday. A snake wine bottle.

I enjoyed this for the most part, however I am having a difficult time believing in Will's part of the relationship. I was never able to get over some of his actions. I can only hope he redeems himself soon. He had not, in my opinion, by the end of this book.

Series- Dangerous Ground
Book-Book 2-Old Poison
Pages- 102
Rating-3.5💫

Summary
The second book of the Dangerous ground series takes place a month after the events of the first book. Will and Taylor are in a relationship but they are no longer work partners. But, hey this is Josh Lanyon's book so we are definitely going to get a mystery plot. Here, the mystery is mingled with lots of action. It revolves around a cobra pickled in a wine bottle that Taylor receives as a birthday gift.

Romance
Now, Will and Taylor are together-together so we are guaranteed to get some sexy times. 🤭🤭But, the change in relationship dynamics and not being work partners causes a bit of angst too.

The mystery from Taylor's past is good and I have started loving both Will and Taylor more than I did in the last book. Both of them have completely different personalities. Will is calm and collected whereas Taylor is a hot-blooded alpha who is ready to combust at any minute.

Note
•The blurb for this book is perfect and to the point.
•The audiobook narration has improved, so I am reading these books back to back without any issue. In case you have not guessed, I am already planning to start the 3rd book.

So after the upbeat HFN feel at the end of Book 1, be prepared for some internal angstiness.

The relationship transition is going exactly as rocky as Will assumed it would, and even though that feels mostly like Will's fault...it doesn't make him wrong :) Thankfully it's dual POV, because I'm not sure how I would feel about Will otherwise!

Meanwhile, Taylor is feeling the pain of a perceived imbalance in their relationship, and even if that perception isn't exactly accurate, it does not make it any less painful. For him or for us.

Their struggle to establish the foundational truth of their relationship is super frustrating at times from the outside, but it still rings very true. They never do that back-and-forth/are-we-or-aren't-we BS that drives me batty, and the issue isn't so much lack of communication as an honest struggle to communicate some very complex emotions, so ultimately I'm ok with it. They just don't have a lot of confidence in each other romantically right now.

Which isn't to say there aren't plenty of sweet and spicy moments relationship-wise. The guys just have an unsettled feel about them.

This action plot is probably the least grounded in reality of the bunch, but who even cares right now?!? Book 2 seems like the best place to have the "weaker" plot since I'm mostly consumed by the relationship at this point.

But the details of it work fine, as it is a Josh Lanyon. It's just a full-on psychopath situation, which feels ironic since this is the LEO series where the MCs are constantly mentioning how rare it is to encounter a true psychopath.

We are starting to get a fuller picture of the MC's pasts and how that baggage relates to their relationship struggles, and the action plot is integral to these revelations.

This type of series work best for me when the two sides of the plot intertwine like this, but it's a fine line for the author to walk to still make it feel realistic. As much as I need the romance, I do not buy it when they cross the line into unprofessional, and Lanyon continues to find the right balance here.

Old Poison (Dangerous Ground 2)
By Josh Lanyon
JustJoshin Books, 2012 and 2019
Four stars

Once more, Josh Lanyon owns the short novel format, filling it with action and emotion and literate, adult prose. Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister survived book one, “Dangerous Ground,” only to be plunged fairly quickly into another mysterious mess. At least the author doesn’t torture us (much) as to their feelings for each other, and that’s a blessing.

However, Lanyon doesn’t give us much time to ponder deeply the shifting nature of these men’s relationship, as creepy threats against Taylor may or may not relate to his past, and blood is spilled. It’s surprising how much depth of feeling Lanyon can pack into a novella, and that can be attributed to her gifts as a writer. She doesn’t waste words, zeroing in on settings, characters, and personalities, so that the reader gets it all quickly.

These are not books you cuddle up in front of a fire on a rainy afternoon to read. These are books you binge late at night while wondering how you’re going to get to sleep when you’re done. I was late to the show on this series, so I’m buying them as fast as I read them.
