When the biggest yawn ever escapes from Jake's mouth and makes his way through the neighborhood, nobody can stop the yawns from happening! Yawn after yawn, one after the other. From squirrels to mice and even coyotes, no one is safe! This soothing bedtime story will get the yawning started and will lull anyone to sleep!
Chris Hardy, a native of California, decided to finally pursue her long-time dream of writing books that touch the hearts of children and adults alike. "Jake and the Pandemic" was her first book and it was inspired by her nieces' experiences during the pandemic as well as the adorable dog, Jake, who she adopted after the passing of her neighbor. She went on to write three more books in 2021 ("Jake and the Purple Unicorn," "Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever" and "Grateful Jake") and she is working on 3 more for 2022.
Her writing goals are to create engaging stories filled with humor, life lessons and education to not only help children but also to help them thoroughly enjoy their book reading experience.
When she isn't engaged in her creative outlet of writing, she runs her business that she has owned since 2002 selling natural products. In her spare time, she enjoys going on walks with Jake, playing tennis with her 80-year-old mom, hiking, watching movies, riding bikes at the beach, vacationing anywhere, spending time with family and being grateful for all the good that is in her life.
A cute little story to read at bed or nap time for children aged 3-8.
I love that the story starts off with a yawn in front of the TV because most nights you can catch me couch napping while trying to watch something with my family.
‘Yawn’ gave me a ghostly vibe as he was roaming all around the town peering through windows and around open doors trying to make everyone sleepy. A common theme I noticed throughout the book was family. Just about each page depicted a family hanging out and enjoying each other’s company, which was nice.
It was fun to see other Jake books included ~ the rabbit was reading Grateful Jake and the skunks were doing a puzzle of Jake and the Purple Unicorn. I thought it was so funny that the squirrel was reading a book called The Efficient Nut Collector. I do wish Jake was more involved in the actual story and not just briefly in the beginning and end though.
Overall, an easy read with adorable illustrations by Wally_LL (Osipova V.). Now please excuse me while I go take a nap.
*Thanks to Chris Hardy for sending me a copy. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
I won this from a Goodreads giveaway. I won another Jake book by Chris Hardy, in which my son enjoyed. So I was thankful to win this one as well. Like the first one, this one didn't disappoint. Cute illustrations, fun story to read along to and kept son engaged!
This was an adorable, quick read about a puppy who lets out a HUGE yawn that spreads all around, causing all the little creatures and all the people to yawn and sleep. The story rhymes and has some very adorable animals. A great read before bed, because it really does make you yawn!
A very cute bedtime book about a yawn that escapes and gets the whole neighborhood sleepy! The text is lively and full of expressive words, but my favorite part of this was the illustrations. They are all very cute and full of fun details and sly jokes. Kids will spot something new each time. This did feel a little long--if I were reading to small kids I might strategically skip a page or two sometimes. But it's a great sleepytime book to help kids wind down and get to yawning. It could definitely become a favorite part of the bedtime routine!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

"Can YOU read this book without yawning a yawn?"
No, I couldn't. Heck, just thinking about a book about yawns was enough to make me break out in yawns. Written to be an effective bed time story, I'd say that author Chris Hardy met her goal. Inspired by her own dog, Jake, the whimsical illustrations and soothing, lyrical flow definitely is enough to lead a reader to at worst stifle a yawn. I wonder how many parents have fallen asleep in the midst of reading this to their children?
Although the Biggest Yawn Ever is visualized as a sort of ghostly spirit in the night, the character of Jake is, as noted, based on Hardy's real life dog, a rescue that, in turn, came to live with Hardy's family when his human passed. Hardy has formed a company around Jake that pledges to donate a portion of every sale to the likes of the Humane Society, rescue shelters, or St. Jude's and the Ronald McDonald House. Good dog, Jake. Keep up that contagious yawn.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BooksGoSocial for introducing me to Jake and that, oh, so contagious yawn. Now I think I need to go take a nap.
This turns out to be part of a charity-minded franchise, and this fourth entry in it barely features Jake. He's a dog who lets out a big yawn, which spreads like the world's greatest contagion of narcolepsy, making all the critters it encounters yawn and fall asleep – including, it's intended, you the reader. No, it wasn't that exciting, was it? As you might gather, I didn't find favour with the idea of a sleep aid that just wanders the world, and it's a good job none of the birds here were flying about, or the beaver midstream. Visually, things are designed to have a CGI cartoon aesthetic, and it kind of works for the target reader but isn't a style I love, and while the rhymed text is not too bad at all, I did think this poor when considering some of the better night-time sleep aids I've read.
A lovely goodnight story about a dog named Jake and his yawn that spread throughout the land.
When Jake releases the biggest yawn EVER, the yawn escapes and travels to everyone it can find. One by one, all of Jake’s animal and human friends fall fast asleep, ensuring a good night’s rest ahead.
As always, I am incredibly fond of a good rhyming cadence when it comes to bedtime stories, and this one is top notch. The illustrations are vibrant, and the usage of the word Yawn over and over makes it very difficult for the reader not to have a yawning fit themselves throughout. Great for getting little ones ready for bed.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ability to read and review this title.
I think this deserves 5 stars....as in the intro, the author stated that she wanted to create a bedtime story, & dedicated it to 'the sleepyheads who don't want to go to bed, & for those who do!' Colorful illustrations that have fun details (I noticed a couple of 'Jake's' previous books being read!) accompany the rhyming story. I liked the variety of animal homes showed throughout the book, & then at the end also liked the variety of children shown sleeping! I think this would be a great bedtime read, & even yawned twice while reading it!! I definitely recommend this to anyone with little ones in the house! I received this e-book, won in a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway listed by the author, & offer this, my own fair/honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for a copy of this book! Below is my honest review.
Summary of plot: Jake the Dog yawns so loudly and so big that everyone in town starts to yawn!
Pros about the book: ✔️ Adorable and colorful illustrations ✔️There's no real "plot", so it's easy to read and comprehend ✔️It's very funny and I can see little ones laughing over the pictures
Cons about the book: ❌ None that I can think of
Would I recommend this book? Yes! I'm really appreciated Jake the Dog series.
I send my thanks to Chris Hardy, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the eBook Kindle copy of Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever! that I won in the Giveaway.
Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever! is a delightful children's book and excellent to read to preschool age children as a bedtime story with the main idea that a yawn makes one sleepy. The illustrations were wonderful and fit the story line. My two great grandsons loved it and asked for a reread and then nodded off at nap time.
This was the cutest bedtime book about Jake and his yawn. Our kids loved this whimsical bedtime story. I hate to say it.....we couldn't make it through the book without yawning a time or two 😂 Thank you to Goodreads for the opportunity to win this book in a giveaway. I know it'll become the new favorite bedtime read. We can't wait to check out more of Jake's adventures in his books 😊👍🏼
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for allowing this book to be read now!
Yaawwwwwn! I yawned reading the synopsis, so that’s good, right? The book did it’s job! I enjoyed that Yawn is a rollerskating ghost, that’s amazing. What really won me over? The yawning hedgehog! Omg, the cutest. A very adorable children’s book to read before bed. Kids are going to like it… especially watching the person reading it to them yawn a whole bunch!
Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever! by Chris Hardy - 5/5
They always say yawns are contagious and in this story that rings true. This book is a great bed time story. Yawns here and yawns there - everyone will be yawning and ready for sleep by the end. Yawn is a rollerskating ghost making his way through town putting all those still awake to sleep. Such a cute story, we all enjoyed it.
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for the ARC.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC. I'm being completely honest with my review.
Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever lives up to its promise and made me yawn 3 times.
This is. Great naptime/bedtime story. The writing is creative and the images are creative and inclusive.
The is my second Jake book and I must say I am a fan of his fun well written adventures. I'll be keeping my eyes open for that sweet little dog in the future
Thank you to Goodreads for the advanced copy! This was a cute book and I love the background story of Jake! Having really loved his other one this one wasn’t my favorite. It was a bit confusing why the yawn came out and I’m wondering if some kids would mistake the picture for a ghost? I see how they tried to make it a bedtime story by making everyone tired but I think it missed the mark.
This is a simple book about a yawn going around and making everyone sleepy, from mice, to birds, to people, etc. It is cute in the sense that I can picture a parent reading this to a child at bedtime, but Jake was only on the very first page. Overall a cute read.
I dare you to read this book and not let out one single yawn. I couldn't do it. I bet you can't either.
What is this sorcery? I opened this when I woke up in the middle of the night and thought it looked cute and it legitimately made me yawn so many times my eyes were watering. The artwork is also so cute. I can’t wait to use this book on my nephew when he won’t go to sleep. But first, I’m going back to bed because this accomplished its goal.
A clever take on how a yawn keeps going. A bedtime story about a yawn that keeps going from one to another and in different ways. Will it get you? Can you escape the Biggest Yawn Ever! The challenge is on for the little one that has a hard time going to bed.
A special thank you to Books Go Social and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This is a sweet, good-night, sleep tight, beautifully illustrated picture book featuring animals taking the part of people. It would help a young child fall peacefully to sleep.
This a grandma buy. Grandparents would like to read this book to grandchildren so they are likely to purchase it. A library would also find it a worthy addition to their collection as it would circulate frequently.
Not really any words but the illustrations are cute and colorful. Would be a great picture book for a young child to look at on their own. Or do an adult to read the sleepy yawns all through the neighborhood at bedtime.
Thanks for the free copy. This was a cute read. perfect for my nieces as a bedtime story. The illustrations were adorable and I loved how yawn visits everyone. It is a cute book and perfect for kids.
i was very tempted to yawn. like really. this book embody a "yawn" from a dog to be some kind of ghost who plagued the neighborhood with sleepiness. there wasn't really moral value from this story, but its cute.
Need a good wind down book, just before bedtime? Then you have got to read Jake and the Biggest Yawn Ever! My granddaughter was pointing out all the yawning animals and before I finished the story, she was yawning. It was too funny and she went down for a nap right after I said, the end!
LRL Book read this book to our animal shelter dogs along with the Kissing Hand. The dogs loved it and so did the girls. They are so excited to read more about Jake. I would recommend all of Jake's books for the kids. It is also a great bedtime story to see who will Yawn first. LOL
