This is the typical mid grade spook story premise of kid goes on holiday and gets drawn into a supernatural mystery from the past but for me I found the settings, descriptions and characters far more engaging than other books I’ve picked up.

The story was a little drawn out at 260 pages considering the target audience and I found the pace did slow a little in the middle but by the end I was hoping for more.

The mystery seems well thought out and all ties together neatly and I couldn’t help wonder if the author was in some way influenced by Charles Dickens, the Signalman (which may explain my own enjoyment of this steam train spook novel) but if you like reading preteen fiction this is a good book and a great author.
