⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well-written and enjoyable. The author has delved into the detective mystery genre with a home run!
Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.
Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.
Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

This case hits too close to home for Zachary! His brother has been missing for weeks, but Zachary has been hospitalized and nobody thought to tell him. Once Zachary is back home he launches a missing person investigation which pulls him into the past. Superb storytelling, well drawn characters and a brilliant plot keep the pages turning. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
This is the 11th book in a series, but the first that I've read. I didn't need to read the rest of the series to enjoy this well written book, but I will probably go back and read them!
Zachary and Tyrrell grew up in separate foster homes from one another and the rest of their siblings.
Tyrrell goes missing and Zachary, who is a PI is determined to find him. Zachary, with all his own problems, but there's no one you'd rather have on the case.
This book deals with family secrets, PTSD, panic attacks, depression. It's real life and it can be hard to read at times, yet hard to put down.
This is the 11th book in this series and the first one I've read. It has enough background information about both Zachary and his brother Tyrell, who both grew up in different foster homes after a fire destroyed their home, and their parents decided they didn't want any of their 6 children anymore, to make it a stand alone book.
Realistic MC. Has OCPD, and ADHD, PTSD, and also suffers from bouts of panic attacks and/or depression that hospitalizes him almost every December for a few days to a few weeks.
He’s looking for his brother that's disappeared, whom no one else that knows him cares about as they have given him up for a lost cause.
December is not a good month for Zachary - ever. Pick up the book and read why. Well defined characters, superbly developed plot, all around deserving of every star - and an ending you won't see coming. Treat yourself to an incredible story. Highly Recommended. Free from the author, this is my honest review.
Not sure how to classify this book, a mystery or a psychological thriller or a bit of both. This book is part of a series but this is the first one I read. It can be read as a standalone. The character development is good. The story revolves around two brothers that were separated many years ago due to being sent into the foster care system who reunite as adults. Both face their own internal demons with success and failure. The book is thought provoking in showing the importance of family and how it effects you as an individual. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary honest review.
He Drowned in Memory - a review by Rosemary Kenny.
Zachary Goldman Mysteries, Book 11, by P.D. Workman - He Drowned in Memory - is a gritty, emotionally-charged story, that will grip you firmly by the imagination throughout.
P. I. Zachary Goldman and his estranged younger brother Tyrrell, both suffer with debilitating, PTSD-like mental demons from their dysfunctional family's abusive past - and each tries to cope in his own, disparate way.
Zach has the support of his loving live-in girlfriend, Kenzie Kirsch, but Tyrrell has left his estranged wife and their two children in the lurch at Christmas and vanished, causing Zach to fear the worst and drop everything to try to find his sibling. Who else does he find first? Will his past torments stymie his determination to locate Tyrrell?
A sobering quest for redemption and forgiveness, set against a gradual voyage of self-discovery and familial revelations, He Drowned In Memory is sure to satisfy fans of Pamela Fagan Hutchins and Carolyn Arnold. Grab a copy today!
Having not read any other books about Zachary, I was at a disadvantage in knowing what the character had gone through previously. That said, I thought Workman did a wonderful job in portraying someone trying to make the best of his previous abuse, PTSD, and neurodivergent tendencies while trying to find his brother. The book did slow down at times due to the internal monologue that ran through Zach's mind, but was integral to the character. I found the book rather sad, Zach's preconceptions and hopes are tested. The book shows the true tragedy of child abuse and alcoholism.
I received this book for free and wished to leave a review.
This book was well written. The main character, though highly flawed, still holds my attention with his drive to do what is right. The book stayed with me long after I had finished it.
December was always hard, the first of the year he could restart his life. Secrets within the family, he was not going to lose a missing brother. Somehow he would do it, and find the clues, he would not lose. His life was a mess, he couldn’t accept how he could cope if he lost. A time of holidays with family, a moving story, of how he did almost the impossible and found one missing brother. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
This was an intriguing story with Zachary dealing with his mental problems while he deals with finding his brother who has disappeared, dealing with his newfound brothers and sisters, and also discovering that he has another family of half-siblings. Reading the previous book would make some things clearer, but it can be read as a standalone. I recommend this book and series.
I enjoyed this book. There is a number of complex relationships thanks to deadbeat parents. Zachary Goldman, our prognostic of the story, suffers from PTSD and low self-esteem, again thanks to the deadbeat mother. The parents abandoned the children and they were all sent elsewhere. Now adults and are looking to reconnect. The only thing that I didn't like was how it ended. I kept looking for more. I am sure that my confusion will probably be cleared up in the next book.
I volunteered a honest review for a free copy of this book.
I haven’t read the previous books but was able to understand and enjoy this story. The author does a great job incorporating bits of the past and the backstory into this book to keep the reader caught up enough. I loved the characters, they were either lovable or abhorrent. I can’t even begin to understand what Zachary and his siblings went through with living with the poor excuses they had for parents. They were nasty people. I really enjoyed this book!
I just finished reading the first in this series (She Wore Mourning) so I could get some background on the main character. Actually, having already read the author’s book that deals with teens in foster care (Tattooed Teardrops) was incredibly insightful (and highly recommended).
As in ‘Mourning’, the author calls out neurodivergents and the difficulties we face in a neurotypical world as well as cPTSD (complex). Thank you for normalizing both of these so that people who not struggling can better understand and therefore better assist.
This book is about a missing person. At the beginning, readers get a glimpse into various ways of how people react when they cannot reach somebody for a while. Expected behavior or not, there are some many variables involved in deciding how to proceed? When does one escalate contact and when does one give space? If and when to involve the police? When does one seek professional help for an intervention?
How does one ask for help when triggered?
I will continue reading this series and others by this author.
The Goldman children all have their own difficulties arising from enduring an abysmal childhood. Zachary, one of the older siblings, has grown up to become a very effective private investigator despite suffering from an array of emotional challenges. In this story he takes on a very personal case. His brother, Tyrrell, has gone missing and Zachary fears the worst. Has Tyrrell simply gone away of his own free choice? Have Tyrrell’s personal demons claimed him and led him back into an anesthetic haze of alcohol? Has some terrible accident befallen him and rendered him incapable of telling anyone to contact his family? Did he become the victim of some deranged killer and is already beyond all help? Zachary’s dogged determination to find Tyrrell takes him down some unexpected paths where he finds out just how little he really knows about his brother. There are some happy surprises and some truly dreadful ones which will test the limits of Zachary’s mettle. As usual, P. D. Workman, does not shy from probing the deep psychological scars of childhood trauma, mental illness, and addiction. Also characteristic of this author, these extremely sensitive issues are explored with extensive empathy, described with incredible clarity, and portrayed with profound insight. There may be some triggers for those individuals not fortunate enough to have experienced an idyllic childhood but, regardless, I found this story to be compelling, engaging, and an excellent addition to one of my favorite series.
I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.
He Drowned in Memory is the eleventh book in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series and it had a good flow with lots of secrets, memories, reminisces, family and friends. Previous plot lines were brought into play and gave a depth to the story. The characters have many layers and we learn about them a little at a time. There's a lot of evil woven throughout that gave a darkness to the story but there were glimmers of hope as well.
The author deals with many real life issues - mental illness, alcoholism, abuses and so much more. She is not preachy about the topics but it adds realism to the story as well as depth to the story. Zachary had more clarity and was more even keeled in this story. His relationship with his girlfriend, Kenzie seemed more focused and he seemed more present. The title had me going in a different direction than what actually took place in the story. We meet more of the characters that we've only heard about before. There was some closure but the book ended abruptly. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Their Walls Were Empty.
Ms. Workman is an author whose many series I've enjoyed. I look forward to reading many more of her books.
Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story. A story of both childhood abuse and regrets as well as hope for the future. The characters are so vibrant, bold and human in their strengths, weaknesses and flaws. The mystery entices you further in wanting or like me needing to know its outcome while the plot keeps you turning page after page until you reach its unexpected and climatic conclusion. Acquire " He Drowned in Memory " today for hours of emotional intrigue and adventurous entertainment. I couldn't put this book down until I finished reading it in the wea hours of the morning, I just had know how it turned out before I could finally go to sleep. Kat
3 1/2 stars This being the first I have read in this series, I found the many references pertaining to Zachary's past life and cases took me out of the story. This happened far too often for me to really enjoy the book. I did expect some of this to happen as it is, after all, the 11th book in the series but it was just too much for me. If you follow the series, I'm certain this will not be a problem for you as, other than that, it is a well written story. I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale.
This is a really complex novel in regard to emotional reactions. Zachary who is damaged from childhood trauma has moments of mental clarity and self-chastisement. I certainly would not wish some of the trauma experienced by him or his family members on anyone. A good read which certainly made me think and too feel involved. It left me thinking that I really needed to find out more about the various mental illnesses, how to recognize the different types, what are their effects and treatments.
He Drowned in Memory is the first book I read in this series, and I found it excellent! There's no judgment, no pity, or no recriminations on the characters' behaviors regarding his traumas and addictions. Everything is laid bare just as they are and although the issues are difficult to read about Ms.Workman writes about them in a way that just left me really surprised, and I want to read more. There's a good plot in the story, and the events and characters are relatable.
This is a well written book with strong characters and has a real life feel to it. The author deals with some heavy issues as one brother is searching for another one. It's a deeply emotional story and my heart went out to the siblings for all they have been and are still dealing with. The story moves fluidly and is a great read. Well done!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
A psychological mystery that you won't want to put down.
Zachary is not your regular well put together investigator. He has some psychological flaws but loyalty to his family isn't one of them. No matter his issues he cares about them, especially his brother who may or may not be missing, after all he has disappeared before. Zachary however is no longer willing to let him continue to do so and so the hunt begins....
"Tyrrell is not your responsibility anymore.” - Zach
Those fateful words set Zach on a path; one he never expected. All leads into the fate of his brother went into oblivion. Nothing Zach did gave him closure...
Intense and unexpected, Drowned in Memory takes you on a journey, one you won't forget. Join Zach on his journey, to discovery of, perhaps, things best left undisturbed....
If you haven't read anything else from this series, you are in for a surprise, as this is NOT the average disappearance mystery. As usual, a very well written and interesting story, easy to read and with excellent characters.
I enjoy this series. This installment provides new insight into the struggle Zach and his siblings had growing up and the different ways each cope (or did not) with their childhood trauma. That's all I can say without spoiling the story.
