Alien Heart

Rate this book
Landon Evans is an unwilling recruit in Earth’s fight against alien invasion. Tall, bristling with muscles, Landon is every commander’s ideal soldier. But Landon hates fighting and hates the dark void of space. For a loner like Landon, the only good part of his new life in the military are the friends he’s made.

When a mission goes horribly wrong, Landon finds himself a prisoner of Earth’s enemies — the brutal animalistic Sorg aliens and the technologically superior and ethereal Hush. Both see the same potential in Landon that Earth commanders saw— Landon’s height and strength, the body of a warrior.

Now Landon must decide if his loyalty lies with his friends and his home world, or with the austere and beautiful young Hush commander he has come to admire.

I have more criticisms than praise for this book that I could probably talk about for hours. But I will try not to. I begrudgingly give this book a 4 star. Well more like a 3.75

I started this book this morning and I’ve just now finished it now that its the end of the day. I have only taken a few breaks in it.

It was bad. But it was also good. And fun. But it was really really bad. It’s not what I would have done, let me say that.

It’s barely romance. It’s mostly just… like sci-fi war.

I feel like this book was a whole lot of words but a whole lot of nothingness was established. A lot happened for sure, but nothing was really… established. Set in stone. Like, “I know this for sure”

If you’re looking for something mostly sci if with little to no sex, that’s a bit sad and dark, but just entertaining, this is for you.

That was pretty darn good.
There was some confusing bits, and some places where I wish we could have spent more time bonding and learning about characters. But this was pretty good. For a debut novel, fantastic.

I'm dying for more :( I have so many questions. What happened with the prisoner who was stuck with the humans after getting bonked with a tree branch? What happens with the MCs?? What does their HEA look like? Why was Yulia's council guy so slimy? I feel like there was more going on with that other than just ,him being a politician...I know it's more of a happy for now ending..... But I really am hoping for a sequel

This book is way more sci-fi than romance, and the M/M part is pretty much incidental. The "romance" is definitely of the "slow burn" variety, and I never really bought into the feelings between Landon and Zaeth. In fact, the only emotions I really connected with were Landon's sense of loneliness and his longing to go home.

Apart from that, the premise that brings the aliens to Earth is, frankly, ridiculous, although many successful sci-fi franchises have used it before—Independence Day, Dark Skies, even The War of the Worlds.

The author displays a good imagination for inventing alien societies, but the Sorg, while somewhat interesting, didn't seem to serve any purpose in the story other than to torment Landon and to present another species that the Hush considered hopelessly inferior to themselves, and the Hush society was only partially fleshed out. It's also not clear why

I could go on about the superfluous characters, the slow plot progression, etc. The basic setup (young man comes of age in a war with an alien race and falls in love with an enemy) has plenty of promise, but I think the author missed the mark here—creating neither a compelling romance nor a compelling sci-fi story. I'm glad I didn't pay to read this book (got it through Kindle Unlimited).

I really tried, but it was tooooo long winded and i got bored and started skipping paragraphs. And then that thing happend… Trigger warnings are needed here.

And till this point there was no romance amd after all the slaughtering und tstl MC, i knew i wouldnt care for one.

Wow. What a bleak nightmare

not much to my taste

I didn’t like Landon very much and as a main character I found him utterly disappointing. In particular when he did nothing to save Romi. So pathetic. Sorry not sorry for the spoiler.
Also I didn’t feel any chemistry between the MCs aaaand Landon siblings were trash.

I don’t know, there are some positive and negative points. However, it is also a book that I would probably not read again.

The book is written in the first-person perspective, and the first two or three pages are already a bit exhausting. We are told in a fast-forward why things are the way they are and who our main character (Landon) is. It was all a bit too lax for me and not to be taken quite seriously.
Later, however, the quality of the writing style picks up and the book is really easy to read and creates images you can picture in your head.

The two „alien species“ were a bit too clichéd for me. We have the Sorg, who look like a red-horned devil (and are somehow also a bit stupid and only live for sex and fighting) and the Hush, who are super pretty and small and somehow so ethereal (and of course extremely intelligent and not interested in sex and physical contact). Yes, one can think about whether stereotypes and prejudices are somehow addressed here.
They all have human characteristics, like breasts, penises, two legs and arms and all the other stuff we have. Somehow I expected more.

The story was quite classic - aliens attack and go to war because humans want to keep their independence. Humans fight back but are actually always crushed. Whuup.

We follow our main character Landon all the time, who is captured by the Hush and Sorg and over time falls in love with one of his captors. (This happens quite blatantly between the lines?) The whole relationship between Landon and the Hush seems too forced to me and like „I have to get romance into it now“. Cultural things are clearly violated and suddenly all things are doable and pleasant that were never wanted before.
The sex scene, which happens at some point, also seems completely out of place to me.

From about 70 per cent on, the story pretty much diminished for me. It all became „oh God we have to fight each other, but we love each other. But our species hate each other and oh god.“.
And THEN the end came and it was just way too fast and yeah ...

There were such blatantly quick jumps in the plot every now and then, like things happened that I think should have just been built up better too. Sad.

I think I’m a little disappointed.

Sad.

Ich glaube, ich bin ein wenig enttäuscht.

I enjoyed the book a lot, but it did have some issues. The first thing that comes to mind was that I think the book definitely could have used a couple of grammar editing passes. There were commas all over the place and for me it made the reading experience sort of stilted. Maybe that was intentional? Because it did seem to fit Landon’s character, but at the same time it was kind of awkward to read

I think what really impacts the book though is that it feels like it should have been a full series instead of just one book. Three or four years pass in this book and it doesn’t really feel like it. There’s definite arcs: the beginning and training and Landon getting taken prisoner on Mars, then the time aboard the Hush ship, and then everything after Landon gets returned to the humans. Like I think that very well could have worked as a full trilogy of books, but instead it all gets condensed into one, and the pacing and development feels a bit off. We get a whole bunch of Sorg weirdness at the start, only for it to end up being mostly irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I did really enjoy Landon and Zaeth’s relationship and its slow build, especially at the start, but after a while it sort of tapers out and we get told they spend a lot of time together without actually experiencing it. Which is a shame honestly because the bits we do get are great

I do think both the Sorg and the Hush are interesting species, and the author did a great job at making them seem alien, with bizarre behaviors that don’t get explained really. It would have been great to experience more of both of them and see more of what their cultures were like

Ultimately I really liked the book overall. The start of it was a bit slow but I got very into it as it progressed. I do wish there was more of it so that the ideas and relationship got to be expanded and developed to their full potential, because the foundation was there but I think it was all a bit too much to condense into just one book. Overall I’d probably give it a 3.5 rounded up, because the ideas are there but the execution isn’t quite. Landon and Zaeth were great but I wanted more. I’d fully welcome another entry to this universe as well

So I'm on an alien romance reading kick recently, and unfortunately so many of them are bad (what does that say about me that I try them anyway.) I closed out after reading a few pages of one last night, and I started in on this. Of the lot I'd gotten on kindle unlimited, I'd thought this one sounded the most promising anyway. Its cover is also 500x better than most of the books I read.

Solid read! Solid. I will say the romance needed a little bit more development. I felt like we were only seeing the outside of it for a very long time and no interpersonal communication.

I will say though, I liked that the plot wasn't entirely romance. There was something else there - grief, war, space. Really compelling. Not vulgar at all, but a story I could take seriously. It was also quite the journey. This book was ambitious and covered a lot.

I liked the relevance of the farm boy bit, but I think it got a little lost during the Hush section.

There were a few typos, but I'm not that much of a stickler anymore. Anyway, this author doesn't have very many books yet, and not many people have read this book - but I think it'll appeal to anyone who likes reading mm romance books, or appreciates romance books with some substance.

I liked the writing. I liked the Aliens and their differences from humans but I hated Landon. He's a cowardly, weak-willed, little worm from beginning to end. My issue is that MAYBE I could maintain an open mind to the aliens during the war but that would've all stopped after Romi was slaughtered like a pig. Landon continuing to be open and compassionate to the aliens just pissed me off. Like, they slaughter a population of Inuit people, even the kids and he's all :( but OH he kills one of the little bastards and sobs his little heart out?! Nah hated the dude fr. He would've been more likable if after Romi, his goal became to end the aliens. If he became cold and calculating with revenge whilst struggling with his feelings for the Commander. Although, I never bought into their romance. Friendship, yes but not enough was done for a romance to be believable between them, especially with how the Commander never really opened up much to Landon, he didn't ever really seem capable of love, just possession. Yulia was one of my favourite parts of the story, she's bitchin' badass lol, I'd trade her in for Landon any day. But ye, mostly I felt frustration throughout this.

This is very much just a case of not for me, the writing is incredible and the world building is stunning.

Landon is very hit or miss for me though, his feelings seem mixed all over the place although understandable with everything going on. Also what happens to Romi, instantly made him drop a lot for me.

He wasn't much of a soldier as that's not what he wanted, but he seemed to always make it work when convenient for him. Also the love interest hush commander is pretty awful and no better then the Sorgs to me.

I think if you're looking for a sci-fi with all the war and space exploration. Then this would be great, but if looking for the romance side its not really there. Well at least not to the the point I got too.

The writing is amazing and very gripping, just very brutal and depressing too. Not my type of read.

I don't really know how to feel about this book. The humans are neither wonderful or awful. They are human. The Sorg are....creepy. The Hush are truly alien. Like, trying to grasp what glaciers ponder.

Some of the side characters get annoying (the two utterly useless prisoners), while others are truly interesting (Yulia).

Zaeth and Landon are infuriating, and endearing. On opposite sides of a war, with completely different ideas about war.

Ultimately, I found the concept great, the execution ok, and the ending abysmal. This is not really a HEA sorta book, or even a HFN. It's not really a tragic ending either. It just....ends.

Hmm

Okay so this is not what I was expecting.

I enjoyed the story. Beautifully written and well thought out. I didn't enjoy the flip of switch Zaeth had towards Landon. Between phase and reality. It was a little much. It felt a little uhhh cheesy? Forced? Instalove without the fated mates? I don't know that sudden switch didn't seem right. Otherwise the story is absolutely phenomenal and I couldn't put it down. No it is not spicy at all. But worth the read. Definitely worth the read.

3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

Multiple instances where punctuation pulled me out of the story to untangle sentences.
Russian/Ukrainian - so much of it, none translated, some of it used incorrectly towards the end. And - why use the swears that no other character can understand (not to mention the readers)?
The last 30% went a little wonky - inconsistencies; resolutions that suited the author, not the characters.
Otherwise - good story, the whole 70% of it and I really liked the ending.

So different... and totally engaging

Don't jump on this if you're looking for hot sex every 3rd page. Do jump on this if you like a long smolder and fascinating world building (the aliens seem truly alien). Best sci-fi read with a MM slant in years, IMO. True sci-fi world building where the chemistry between the 2 main characters builds to a sizzle over the whole story arc. Absolutely loved it!

This was a book a marinated on for a long time after reading with no idea what to say about it. The action was fine. The plot... motivations... especially of the aliens... seemed super weird and nonsensical. Nothing in the story made a lot of sense. The descriptions were relatively well done and the characters were relatable and I liked them but... the book almost felt like drug-fueled ramblings overall. (And there were lots of weird... drug-fueled trips... throughout the story).

Alien Heart, a beat out of time.

Alex Timothy has written a decent book. I have to admit it took me a while to finish it due mainly to the storyline that didn't grab my attention. It's a good story, but it's just a beat out of time. Maybe if he had allowed the story to evolve a bit more with more emotions or another tweaking of the SL, it would have read better. But if I find another book by him that grabs my attention, I would still read it.

solid scifi, don't hold your breath for something steamy.

Very solid read. good scifi, good world creation, believable charaters. All in all a pretty good read. just do not go in expecting a lot of steamy scenes with the main characters. it's more of a "and they kissed... and did stuff... BYE". nothing wrong with that. just be aware.

Meandering, but good

Never heard of this author, but picked this up on a whim. Surprisingly good, almost 5 star story. Mostly action, and a bit of a long lead up to the romance part, but still a delightful sci-fi story.

I really liked the action and how it built up to the romance. We went through it along with Landon and sweated out how Zaeth and Landon would be able to successfully end the war and be together . This was such a great book .

Awesome BUT...

Their intimacy was too rushed. Their first time should have been magical. I hate when authors get lazy or rush that most vital part of the story.

It is an enjoyable read with exciting sci-fi ideas. The protagonist is different from your usual hero, which makes this story unique.
