A Naughty Little New Year

Rate this book
For the past year, Detective Dan Forrester has made it his mission to shut down Rawhide Ranch — a resort catering to the type of men who enjoy inflicting pain. So when he receives yet another postcard asking him to come for a visit, he finally gives in.

Maybe now he'll be able to gather the evidence he needs to close the Ranch's doors forever and put Derek Hawkins behind bars.

But his black and white worldview is put to the test when he meets sweet, beautiful Lacey, one of the Ranch's Littles who has spent the last five years in a wheelchair.

New Year's Eve is a time for new beginnings...but is Dan willing to turn his back on everything he believes to be a Daddy for the woman of his dreams?

He broke his own rules

Maren Smith made spanking novels palatable for me and really opened a new world for me. I have read other stories from the ranch, and while they were not my cup of tea, I enjoyed seeing this other lifestyle. But this one wasn't up to par for me. It started out okay: A guy who thinks Doms are just a different form of abusers and is convinced to come to the ranch under the guise of changing his mind, but he really plans to gather evidence to shut the operation down. Dan seemed bull headed in his reasons for thinking Derek was an abuser, but you really liked seeing him soften towards Lacey and become the Daddy she needs. You really feel for Lacey; she gets looked over for play partners, she can't do the fun things other Littles get to and she can't be punished the same way they are either. But Dan comes in and changes all that.

I was ready to over look the little things wrong with the book: continuity errors, Lacey being called Lucy and the whole scene where she calls Dan Daddy the first time but doesn't actually call him Daddy, just thinks she did. They were smallish things that can slip through the cracks. But the reason I DNF'd was because Dan became the person he thought all Daddies were: an abusive brute. He carried Nikki into the main building and held her close and kissed her forehead multiple times. It came across to me that he was holding her in a manner you would comfort someone you care about, but he didn't even know her. Lacey sees this, and her low self esteem fills in the blanks and she goes outside through an emergency exit. I didn't like that she did that. There were better places to go, but she wasn't thinking right.

But how Dan reacted was too much. He saw no problem with how he treated Nikki, as long as he was imagining Lacey, it was okay. But if the tables were turned and someone was holding Lacey that way he would have a fit. Then it was how he treated Lacey. She said she didn't want him to be her Daddy anymore. Yes she was upset, but he totally disregarded her voice and pulled her out of her chair and forced her to go with him. Then after a security guard brought her chair, he put it in the closet so she couldn't get to it. He spanked her even though she said she didn't want him to be her Daddy, so I feel like even though she was speaking from an upset frame of mind, he was breaking some of the rules that are established in a relationship where one partner gives up more control to the other. So basically he was forcibly keeping her against her will, took away her wheelchair so she had no way to leave, pulled her pants down and beat her with a small leather whip against her will, which is what he was accusing all the Daddies of doing. She was upset and instead of listening to her, he disregarded her voice because he is right in every situation. So all of the progress we saw at him opening up was thrown out the window. I couldn't anymore. I felt that this wasn't done by someone familiar with Daddy/Little dynamics, just BDSM, and really only that. This isn't any way for any relationship to go, let alone one with someone in a wheelchair. Overall it is a huge disappointment and really felt like the author was phoning it in.

I really loved that we get to see a Little who has a disability get her HEA!! While Lacey isn't completely dependent on her wheelchair, her emotions really get to you. And Dan, coming in thinking he's going to finally shut the Ranch down, has no idea what he is getting himself into. Another plus is that both characters are older and more mature, age wise. Derek and Sadie are always a treat to see in any of the Rawhide Ranch stories. With each book, I enjoy more and more how protective Derek is of all the Littles. This book just made me smile and touched my heart. And I'm so hoping that we will get Nikki's story in the future!

Enjoyable

I enjoyed Dan and Lacey’s story. In fact, Dan may be my new favorite Daddy Dom of the Rawhide Ranch series. He’s strong, protective, stubborn, witty, and willing to try new things even if outside his comfort zone (albeit with a bit of prodding). I liked that he is middle aged and not interested in someone significantly younger than himself. I also liked that he gave Master Derek a run for his money and the byplay between the two of them

this was a surprisingly sweet and mature take on the DDlg genre!

So here we follow Dan, a detective convinced the ranch is mistreating its Littles and Lacey, the warm-hearted Little who immediately catches his eye. Their dynamic is compelling from the start: Dan’s a total newbie to the lifestyle, while Lacey is experienced and knows exactly what she needs. Watching him push past his judgments to truly see her? That’s where the magic happens.

What I really appreciated:

· Older MCs in their 50s!! Mature, grounded and refreshing.
· Role reversal: An inexperienced Dom with a seasoned sub? Yes, please! It added such a genuine layer of learning and trust.

That said, a few things didn’t quite land for me. Lacey’s disability storyline, while handled with visible accessibility efforts, slipped into some tired “self-hating” tropes that felt unnecessary. And though the ranch is portrayed as supportive, it bugged me how often Lacey’s loneliness was brushed aside, like her feelings weren’t fully validated until Dan showed up.

The main conflict also got a little silly near the end, and Lacey’s reaction seemed to come out of nowhere, almost like a personality swap for plot convenience. But honestly? The heart of this story, two older adults finding trust, love, and gentle dominance, still shone through.

Lacey is a middle aged Little in a wheelchair and has never had a Daddy Dom. Dan is the police officer who found Sadie over a year ago and now Sadie has invited him to the ranch to see what is it like. Derek did not want him there because Dan thinks Derek runs a brothel for Littles but he allowed it. Enjoy this very interesting match.

An older Little

And her HEA. kind a refreshing change that she was not battered before arriving at Rawhide Ranch. Yes, she was injured and in a wheelchair but it was finding her Daddy that healed her the most.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

The story is another excellent addition to the Rawhide Ranch series, where each story will read well as a stand-alone. It will have a Detective believing that the Ranch involves Derek pimping out Littles—and he is determined to prove it and shut the place down. The story is an emotional roller coaster ride—with hopes and wishes to find a special Daddy, along with hurt feelings, a painful past, and plenty of new experiences.

Sadie: He was an outsider looking in on things he didn’t understand.
Derek: We don’t owe that man anything at all. And seriously, now, I am done talking about it.
Sadie: I’ve invited him.

Detective Dan Forrester is the man who found an abused Sadie in a ditch, and he still worries about her. Being on the police force, he has seen it all, and he thinks Derek is using the Littles. Now, Sadie has been writing him, inviting him to visit Rawhide Ranch—and he has finally decided to do just that.

“Detective Dan Forrester was a Daddy Dom. He just didn’t know it. Yet.”

Lacey is one of the older Little’s at Rawhide, but she is the only one in a wheelchair. Her life was shattered four years ago when a drunk driver hit her head-on. The vertebrae in her lower back had been fused, and she has extensive nerve damage, which affects her balance. Lacey craves to be treated like the other Littles, but she cannot be spanked like them, so she ends up in the corner or writing lines.

The story’s plot will have Dan there to investigate Derek and the ranch, Sadie realizing that Dan has a side of himself he doesn’t even know, and Lacey and Dan finding each other. There is no love loss between Dan and Derek, the animosity is still present, and slowly, these two learn to be somewhat tolerable of each other. Dan agrees to take classes, one-on-one training from Derek and discovers that he wants more with Lacey. He shares with Derek a form of correction that will give Lacey what she needs while not harming her back with impact.

“Always be honest. This lifestyle is nothing without open communication between partners.”

“ A few years is a long time to go without something you want. Let me take care of you, Lacey.”

“I don’t go through the motions, sweetpea. I am the motion. Before tonight, when I tuck you into bed and tell you sweet dreams, you’re going to realize exactly what kind of man I am. And I promise, it’s not what you’re thinking.”

The story has Dan discovering that Derek isn’t a villain; the Littles aren’t being pimped or coerced into anything. This is a lifestyle they crave and need—and for each Little, there is a Dom or Domme out there. Dan realizes that with Lacey, she is the woman he has waited for, and now that they have met, he is thinking future. He shows her that she isn’t handicapped because she requires a wheelchair—and with the right person, other provisions can be made to allow her freedom. She is fragile, not just in body, but in her own mind, worried that her Daddy Dan will find another Little girl and leave her. Between them, they must learn to trust and have faith in one another. I love how once Dan became more focused on Lacey, the chemistry between them, the more he understood that Derek and the ranch are a safe haven for a Little lifestyle. The story has a fantastic coveted, ‘Happily Ever After” ending.

Dan et Lacey

Ageplay

This story takes place on Rawhide Ranch, a vacation place for Littles. Here, we get Dan, a detective certain that the management abuses the submissives in their care, and Lacey, the Little he's immediately attracted to. Can he overcome his distaste for the lifestyle to give her what she needs? Note: Though it's a standalone in terms of the couple, Dan and Derek's hostility has its roots in Sadie's Little Christmas: Holidays at Rawhide Ranch Book 3. Trigger Warning for Child Abuse: Do these authors really believe that beating children is "cute" or "heart-warming?"

If you're looking for a consensual, fairly mild DD/lg book featuring two mature, likable characters, you will enjoy this. I particularly appreciated three aspects: that the couple is older (in their 50s); the humor (as someone who is not a fan of Derek's, I enjoyed Dan's needling him); and that -- atypical for this genre -- Dan is a newbie dom, while Lacey is an experienced sub.

I do wish that the author hadn't used the hoary cliché of the self-hating character with a disability (though I did appreciate that the ranch was wheelchair accessible). I wish that everyone hadn't kept telling Lacey that her feelings weren't valid when clearly no one had tried to partner with her in all the years she'd been there. And I wish that the ultimate conflict hadn't revolved around a plot point so incredibly silly that Lacey seemed to undergo a personality transplant, but there you go. I'll also add that the New Year's setting really wasn't used to any effect and I didn't understand the "9 years ago" at the beginning, given that Sadie's Little Christmas: Holidays at Rawhide Ranch Book 3 was published in 2020.

3 1/2 stars. We're introduced to one character who will probably get the next book. I assume that safe words exist in this place? Interesting that in all this "training," they aren't covered.

I was really, really excited that Lacey got her Daddy. Ever since she asked Santa Derek to let her ride a horse and he had to refuse her (for her health) in Sadie's Little Christmas, I have eagerly awaited this story. The Author did her justice by giving her a great Daddy and a fantastic story.

I hated Dan when he was first introduced but thankfully, Sadie has a heart of gold and thought she saw something in him. Dan's trip to the Rawhide Ranch brings him into contact with Lacey. The author did an amazing job of letting us into Lacey's head to see how lonely and left out she is at the Ranch. Dan's journey to understanding Littles and their Bigs was page turning and every encounter with Derek more enjoyable than the last. Of course, something has to happen that requires Dan's skills which in turn throws a wrench in to the main story but helps add so much depth of understanding and caring, too. Great story and loved the ending!

Grab this new addition to the Rawhide Ranch series!

I've read a couple of books by Marin Smith and also a few books on Littles over the last few years.

This one will stand out, not because of how it was written or the story itself, but the way Ms. Smith drew Lacey. I understood her the second she opened her mouth. She was sympathetic, smart, and beautiful all in one package. Her self esteem had hit a low point, because of her injury, and it takes Dan to bring her out of it slowly and let her see reality.

Yes, Dan gets a little carried away with his "Johnny Loop" or whatever he called it, but I could understand it and was ready to forgive him just about anything, because he had a huge heart (you could tell by the way he was worried about Nikki).

I will say there were sentences that weren't cohesive in this book. The words didn't match up, especially in a couple of compound sentences. A quick re-edit would clean those up.

I'll read more of Marin Smith's books. I loved that I could load this onto KU. Thanks!

Good

Plot-wise, total yes, but for one complaint - for an older man who knew NOTHING about the lifestyle, within the very first day of arrival at the Ranch, he was using lingo he would have never heard of - and pushing 60, this just feels entirely removed from human nature.

Still. I adored the FMC Lacey, the painful points and insecurities of her being wheelchair bound was beautifully done, and again Rawhide Ranch feels like a fantasy bubble that I really wished actually existed. The MMC was funny, earnest, and a perfect DD - but for the fact that in total this total shift in character took a week, this shortie was super fun and therapeutically emotional to read.

An emotional journey

Wow! Talk about a story that really brings you on an emotional journey. I absolutely loved reading this story about Lacey who has Muscular Dystrophy and is now bound to a wheelchair after an accident and her emotional pain of not being good enough for a Daddy Dom. Then along comes Dan, who is the officer who helped save Sadie and he himself learns new things about himself. What a great story. I laughed and cried in this one.

I am voluntarily leaving my review for this book and this is my honest and fair opinion.

That was awesome!

I think we all get in our heads like Lacey. Now if only we could all find a Dan to calm those thoughts and sort us out. I love Rawhide Ranch and have disliked Dan ever since Sadie’s story. But this brought him into a different light and redeemed him. He is a good guy, just with a few misunderstandings clouding his judgement. If only the rest of the world could learn to listen. Lacey had a way of blocking her own blessings, even with a house full of friends telling her different. Loved this story from the beginning!

Finally Lacey's HEA

I've been hoping for so long now that Lacey would find her Daddy and get her HEA, and Maren pulled it off!

AND she was able to "redeem" the police officer from Sadie's story too!

Maren tackled so much with this book: a newbie Daddy, a little in a wheelchair, how to spank safely, how to ride a horse safely, etc. She really deserves an award for tackling a lot in a "short" amount of pages. Truly shows her writing skills.

I love Rawhide Ranch!!! All the littles running around and the naughty things they get up to! Master Derek always can settle them down! Or Nanny J also tends to temper their excess energy!! This was a story of Detective Dan and to find out if he was Daddy dim material! Lacey is an older little who thinks her very own Daddy will never come along. I love these match ups! It’s always a pleasure to visit there!!

Very heartwarming!!

I just enjoyed this book so much. The Little in it was so sweet and broken. She's in a wheelchair and he's a cop that has never understood age play. But, when Sadie finally convinces him to come to Rawhide Ranch to experience it, he finally gives in. Can a Little in a wheelchair change his mind? Wonderful story, with two people who need each other so much. Loved it!

Another good Rawhide tale

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars was because of the last few pages of the book. The ending left a bitter taste without a sweeter resolution. It would only take another sentence. There were 2 or 3 misspellings and incorrect name used in one instance, but the story is otherwise edited well.

surprise outcome

Sadie kept writing officer Dan to invite him to the ranch; so he could see first hand that he had it all wrong about Master Derek, the Ranch and being a little. The banter between Derek & Dan will have you laughing & Rolling your eyes. Dan’s mission of arresting Derek & closing the Ranch all changed when he met Lacey & were matched during his stay.

Loved it!

It was great to read about a little that was older and not physically able to do the average things. Then to meet a Daddy who wanted Her! That was terrific and gave me hope. It was nice seeing Master Derek was willing to learn, that made even more "masterful " in my eyes.

I enjoyed this story. I loved Dan who is just a Daddy to Lacey. All the characters are very well done, real and rounded. There are some well deserved disciplinary spankings. There are also other elements that make this a true page-turner. This story shows that there is life and love for those over fifty. I want to know what happened next. I highly recommend it. I loved this story and author.

Lacey and Dan

This is a very good, well written, DD/lg romance. It is part of the Rawhide Ranch series. The characters are we developed and very believable. This is a story of an older Little and Daddy, who did not know he was a Daddy Dom. He is the local law and wants to arrest Derek for running a brothel.he is invited to spend a week at the ranch. Read and enjoy.

A Winning New Year!

A curmudgeonly yet well meaning older policeman and a wheelchair bound little who’s missing out are thrown together for one eye opening week. Lacey’s insecurity and desires have her so distraught only Officer Dan seems to be the man to rest her. These two are so wonderful! I love how Dan changes and comes to understand this completely different world.

Like the rest of the Holiday Rawhide Ranch stories, this ended WAY too soon. I absolutely loved Lacey and I was tickled pink at Dan's "evolution." Then end of the book left a great big smile on my face.

HEA over Fear

Shows even through fear happiness can happen. Cute reminder we all get inside our own heads, and sometimes mix up the cues of what is happening around us. But it took strong instincts for this Little and Daddy to find each other and believe.
