Christine Logan has learned to tread lightly around her domineering husband, Phillip. A man who uses his fists as much as words to express his anger. What little joy she has in her life comes from her volunteer job as a painting instructor at the Community Center and her visits with the artist aunt who raised her.
In the arms of her lover, Michael Shaw, Christine finds comfort and escape; for a few stolen moments at a time. Though, as much as she loves Michael, she knows she’ll never be free of Phillip and the hold he has over her.
When Phillip discovers her infidelity, he orders her to get rid of the child— underscoring his displeasure with fists and threats. But rebellion awakens inside her. She wants this baby more than anything. How can she destroy the precious life growing within her? Can she break free of Phillip’s iron fist of control? How far is she willing to go to gain her freedom? When love becomes hate, is murder necessary? Fans of Body Heat and Sleeping with the Enemy , will love this fast-paced thriller of love, hate, betrayal, and murder.
Anita Rodgers is the author of the psychological thriller, False Witness, the Scotti Fitzgerald Mystery Series, and the recently released Dead Dog Trilogy.
She’s a writer, a blogger, a pet mom, a gardener, a cook, and a lover of puzzles. She lives in Southern California with her beloved terrier/poodle Lily and two silly cats, Boodie and Bitzy. And can usually be spotted at Starbucks contemplating the perfect crime over a cup of Sumatran. She has a serious social media addiction, is obsessed with GIFs, and loves to interact with family, friends, and fans on Facebook and Twitter.
Anita Rodgers knocks it out of the park again! Domestic abuse, adultery and murder. The author doesn’t go into graphic detail about the abuse, but the reader can surmise the abuse has been ongoing for a while. The husband is despicable but the devil gets his due in the end. Anita is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend this book.
If you are a murder mystery fan, I heartily recommend moving ‘A Dread so Deep’ by Anita Rodgers to the top of your to-read pile. It is a brilliant, compassionate story. The plot is focused and clever, and the book’s resolution is surprisingly upbeat given that domestic abuse and infidelity drive the story line. This novel appears to be a prequel to the author’s ‘Coffee and Crime’ series, and those who have read this trilogy will remember Detectives Emily Davis and Pete Daniels, as well as Scotti. It was enjoyable to find the detectives fleshed-out in more detail, and to spend significant time within their relationship as police partners. Christine Logan, this novel’s main character, is an interesting human study of strengths and needs, of a woman trapped in a dangerous relationship but paralyzed by the thought of leaving. Her husband, Phillip, is very well-crafted, definitely fitting an abuser profile. Ms. Rodgers has done an equally good job creating her other characters, most of whom are full of complex paradox, as most human beings are. I would give this novel more than five stars if I could. It is, in my opinion, Anita Rodgers’ best work so far.
Anita Rodgers is very versatile with her writing. Domestic violence is not a subject to be put under the carpet as it's happening every day to someone. In "A DREAD SO DEEP ", Anita writes of violence, adultery, and murder. Her characters are well developed, and the storyline holds your full attention to the very end. There are a few people in the story who would want to murder, so please read it to find out. Highly recommended read.
Wow! This is such a great book! Philip is a brutal abuser and womanizer. His wife lives in fear of doing anything that could make angry. Then Philip is found dead in his bathtub. Did he kill himself or was he murdered? The two detectives David and Daniels question whether it was suicide or not. Certainly he was a hate filled man that a lot people might have wanted to get rid of. So I guess you could say this is a crime thriller. I loved the characters in it, especially the detectives, Christine, and her Aunt Violet. And Scott I plays a cameo role at a restaurant with her delicious baked goods. The ending surprised mr, but I won't say more. Check it for a great read!
Another great story by Anita Rodgers, the mystery writer who never disappoints. Christine Logan has an abusive husband who has a lot of women on the side, including Christine's sister. When her husband turns up dead, Christine is a prime suspect. Did she kill him?
Great characters -- two of my favorite detectives from an earlier series by Ms. Rodgers are also part of the book. All of Anita's characters are realistic, well-written, and believable. The humor she puts into her mystery books is also a big draw. And she knows her way around a plot.
Enjoyed reading my first book by this author. The pace was fast enough and the characters compelling enough to keep me reading ... though I must admit my poor feeble mind had trouble keeping track of the two detectives whose names were so similar. Ending was very satisfying! Thanks Ms Rodgers! On to Dead Dog Trilogy!
WOW... I was pulled into Antia Rodgers' newest, A Dread So Deep just a few paragraphs in... thinking whos is going to be the victim and was I surprised. Plenty of twists and potential suspects as the smart-ass Dectective Davis nd her partner Daniels works on solving a crime... or was it a crime?
The pages flew by, as I worked myself trying to look for clues; with even Julie Beck in the back of my mind as a potential suspect. I had put 2-and-2 together and figured out her like appearance to Christine was surely key to who and how she was connected to Logan.
I especially love the dialogue Ms Rodgers provides to tell the story for the readers... it is truly how people talk... nothng flowery. It's just the simple back-and-forth conversations that reveal the thoughts and attitudes of the characters.
And can't say enough about the ending... it wasn't what I had expected but I truly appreciated how it was handled.
One small note... Christine believed the baby to her husband's... but was it?
Anita Rodgers tackles the tough subject of domestic abuse by winding a mystery around several potential suspects that all have reasons for wanting Phillip dead. This is a short piece that manages to create good depth of theme, story, and character development. The plot carries you smoothly through the read, all the while keeping you intrigued until the end. Kudos to this author! Encapsulating an intense topic and turning it into an entertaining mystery story could not have been easy.
Writing a crime story about domestic abuse is difficult at best. Anita Rogers manages to pull it off extreamly well. I, the reluctant reader, was so drawn in that I found the book difficult to put down. I don't want to give away the story except to say that I kept changing my mind on who I was hoping the killer was. If you are a fan of Anita's books, then make sure to read this one.
