The Classical Seat : A Guide for the Everyday Rider

Rate this book
The essence of classical riding is being "at one" and in tune with the horse. It is not mystical or complex, and is open to all riders who wish to improve their own and their horse's performance. No rider - whatever level they are at - should feel it is beyond them. In "The Classical Seat - a Guide for the Everyday Rider", Sylvia Loch shows how all riders can attain a correct (and hence, safe) classical seat - one that is deep, balanced and sensitive, and gives maximum control.

I can see why this is considered a classic book on equitation - it's a very clear guide to achieving a good riding seat, with amusing illustrations, great photos and helpful exercises. There has definitely been a lot that I can take away from it and it will join my permanent collection of riding books for future referral.

However, I do also have a couple of reservations about it, the first being relevance in that I was definitely taught a classical posture on a horse and, even if I don't always achieve it, I am well aware of what I'm aiming for. So it's constant assertions that this way is not taught is no longer relevant. I also found it's tone annoying in places - the author is obviously hugely passionate about the subject, but on occasion she seems to slip into a patronizing, lecturing tone, where 'her concepts are brilliant and no-one else's should get a look in!' Luckily, it doesn't happen very often and so overall my enjoyment of this book was not spoiled.

A helpful reminder of what constitutes a good seat. A good reminder of some of the things you are taught along with an explanation as to why. A great resource for riders at many experience levels.
