The Mate Games: Pestilence #0.5

Promised to the Night

Gavin

I am the Duke of Tears, known for my skill with a whip and my penchant for pain. I never wanted a wife. I wanted a submissive.

But it would seem, what I want and what is required of me are two different things.

Vampire politics are a lot like those of Regency England, and now that Roslyn Blackthorne has thrown herself at my feet to save her family, I understand duty better than I ever thought I would.

Although, she does look so pretty on her knees for me. Perhaps it does not need to be either or. This marriage could be convenient in more ways than one.

Rosie

I shouldn’t like to see my new husband’s predilections on display, but when I uncover his dark secrets, all I can focus on is how badly I want to be on the other end of his whip’s lash.

Gavin was supposed to be nothing more than a way to end our families’ centuries-long feud. Instead, he’s opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed. One I long for.

I’d thought becoming a Donoghue would require sacrifice, but if my body craves what only he can give me, is it really?

His family is twisted, but the connection we share might make it all worthwhile. The real question is, do I stay and become his duchess, or do I save myself from them, and run?

Promised to the Night is the prequel to a spicy new why choose series from USA Today Bestselling authors K. Loraine and Meg Anne set in their bestselling Mate Games Universe. Are you ready to play?

It was not bad, but it was not really necessary either… 🤷🏼‍♀️

This prequel shows us how Roslyn Blackthorne became engaged and married to Gavin Donoghue, and how even though it was a marriage of convenience, she hoped that it could blossom into a good life for her. Rosie quickly realizes she was wrong about Gavin and his family, and is left with no choice but to run to get away from them.

I listened to this prequel after reading the first book of the Pestilence series, so while it holds a few answers about Rosie's husband, Gavin, it didn't add anything to the overall plot. Especially since I've read the other Mate Games series before and had already a few pieces of information about Rosie and Gavin from this series.

Rosie is an interesting main character and with this prequel, we can already see that while having lived a sheltered life, she is far from being a meek pushover. She is determined to do everything to protect herself and her family, and it will surely be interesting to follow her in her spinoff series.

I technically read this twice, once by myself and then when I realised it was included in the Deal with the Demon audiobook I read (listened to) it again. So will I log it twice? We'll see.

It's a novella that answers some questions from the end of the first Mate Games series and provides an introduction to the spinoff series. You can choose to start with this one if you want, but it's better to read the other series first so you can understand the whole world and how it got to this point.

I am super excited to see what will happen when Rosie and Gavin meet again in the main series, I CAN ALREADY TELL HE'LL BE SO MAD, I'M LIVING FOR IT. And I'm also looking forward to getting to know him better, since we didn't get to aside from certain preferences.

Rosie is so cute, she'll be a good main character, I'm sure.

And the audio is good too, if you have a chance to listen to it I highly recommend it. On I go now to Deal with the Demon, I may or may not listen to it for several hours straight.

*ALC received from Audibly Addicted in exchange for my honest review. *

Before Deal with the Demon, book one in The Mate Games: Pestilence series Roslyn Blackthorne was promised to Gavin Donahue. She craved him even when she wasn't supposed to but on their wedding night, she had this idea of what their life could be. Rosie was very wrong. Gavin wasn't the man she thought he was and now she has no choice but to run.

Gavin Donahue could take her, make her his to use. He just needs to keep her safe until he can get an heir out of her except all that changes on their wedding day. She wasn't what he was expecting but now she is gone, forever and his life will never be the same.

The narration of this was included in the narration ALC I received for The Mate Games: Pestilence book one and you are not ready. This was just a taste of the narration that is to come in the first book and with Stella Hunter and John Hartley among the many narrators to be a part of this series I can't wait to start the first book!

If you liked Rosie in the original Mate Games series, then get ready for Noah Blackthorne's sister! She might be a bit naiver than him but have no fear she is a true Blackthorne and will stop at nothing to protect her family. Even if that means dying.

****Listened to this on Audible. The cast is AMAZING for this whole series****

Book 0.5 of 4

💜 RH PNR MMFMMM
💜 First Person/Multi POV
💜 Vampires, wolves, demons, angels
💜 Will have MM in future books
💜’Technically’ no cheating*
💜 Yes OM drama, no OW drama
💜FMC is a virgin, men definitely not
💜 Gavin is a sadist

FMC- Roslyn Blackthorne
MLs- Gavin (so far; more to come)

*this happens on their wedding night. I say technically no cheating because Gavin doesn’t touch the other guy. Him and the other guy are naked but there is no touching other than the wip that Gavin uses on him. Yes they both get off but no touching. I think it didn’t bother me because it was a male, not a female lol*

This is the prequel to The Mate Games Pestilence. Rosie is our FMC. She is the younger sister to Noah, who is one of the MLs in the first series The Mate Games War. Please read that series first! Highly recommend listening to it as the voice actors do such an amazing job of bringing them to life.

Instead of watching her younger brother Wes get sentenced to die, she offers herself up to the Donahue family and agrees to marry Gavin. Rosie sees Gavin on his laptop with another male after leaving her on their wedding night basically high and dry. She gets off on watching it all play out. Afterwards he finds her and they talk about what happened. When they were about to start a ‘scene’, in walks the man Gavin was just with. He starts yelling and gets all jealous of Rosie. Rosie leaves immediately to her room. After Gavin kicks the guy out and mopes around for awhile, he goes to confront Rosie. Only to find out she is gone. This brings us to the start of the series.

So I am writing this review AFTER listening to the whole series. I was worried I wasn’t going to like Gavin since I’m not huge into sadists. He actually is my favorite lol He is loving where he needs to be and dominate where he needs/wants to be.

It was fast-paced and very horny LOL And a strange blend of "socially, we interact and behave like it's the 1800s, but we also have laptops and cellphones".

I didn't realize I'd jumped into an ongoing, interconnected series, so Imma have to back track and probably start at the beginning to see if it's worth tackling the whole thing.

I was a little surprised to find a virginal FMC that was 125% completely on board with being submissive to a guy that got a kick out of inflicting physical pain right out of the gate. At least Anastasia dipped her toes into the vanilla side of things before leveling up to the red room. But not Roslyn, girl was turned on AF and down to fuck no matter the pain or violence of it all, which for someone with zero experience when it came to sex was wild.

But for how soft and naive she first came across, looks like there's a spine of steel hiding there somewhere.

Promised to the Night by Meg Anne and K. Loraine is the prequel to The Mate Games: Pestilence series that I listened to on audio narrated by J.F. Harding, Jacob Morgan, James Joseph, John Hartley, Stella Hunter, and Teddy Hamilton.

This book is included in the purchase of the Deal With The Demon audiobook.

I loved the Mate Games series and was so excited when they announced this spin off series that will be following Noah's sister Rosalyn. I like that they did this prequel book since it gives us more information into Rosalyn and Gavin's background.

The narrating cast is amazing! I love that they do a full cast for this series.

A short prequel novella. I didn't enjoy the language, and the characters seemed quite immature. I couldn't even determine the time period this book was set in. This seems unnecessary, as it could have been included as a quick prologue at the beginning of the first book.

This is my first read by these co-authors. There's a few of them I'm interested in and put on my TBR. This is fresh for me as there is an aristocracy among creatures. Rosie and Gavin get married to end their families feuds and among other reasons. I'm glad I read this prequel before I continue the series because this one does end in a cliffy.

“I didn’t recognize this woman. The one who wanted to keep all of them. I blamed my sister-in-law. Until her, I wouldn’t have ever imagined the possibility of multiple love interests. Why should I choose? Sunday bloody well hadn’t.”

Welcome back to The Mate Games by K. Loraine and Meg Anne! We start out with the prequel novella, Promised to the Night. Roslyn Blackthorne (Rosie), the sweet and innocent sister of Noah, finds herself arranged to be married to Gavin Donoghue to end the feud between their families. She quickly realizes that the marriage is more than what she agreed to. When she finds out his family’s true intentions for her, she decides that Rosie needs to die to save herself and her family.

Deal with the Demon is the first installment in The Mate Games: Pestilence series. Kim and Meg have captivated us once again with this provocative, why choose series opener. The story begins in Aurora Springs, Alaska where Asher Henry, a black-hatted hacker, is about to become Rosie’s savior. Asher can help Rosie with everything, with the exception of her scent. One lonely night, Rosie drunk-summons a demon, Pan- the gorgeous, purple-horned, forked-tongued and tailed demon- and is shocked when it actually works. Pan is more than happy to strike a deal with Rosie to mask her scent, but you know what they say about the best laid plans, they never quite go as expected.

After making her a new identity, Asher dumps Rosie on the Mercer twins, Bentley and Remington. With them she has a job, a place to live, and an unexpected connection to both twins. Combine that with her attraction to her delectable and depraved demon, her elusive hacker and her estranged and sadistic husband, and we find ourselves on the edge of our seats knowing there is so much more deliciousness to come. Can she stay hidden from Gavin? When will she find out that her deal with the demon was more than she bargained for? Will Rosie continue to explore the attraction and connection that she feels for all her men? What does Pestilence have in store for this round of the Mate Games?

This multi-cast audiobook is narrated in duet by Stella Hunter, Teddy Hamilton, J.F. Harding, John Hartley, James Joseph, and Jacob Morgan. Stella Hunter flawlessly embodies Rosie’s determination and fragility, as well as showcasing her amazing talent with her wide range of accents. We can always count on Teddy to deliver a delightfully entertaining performance. J.F. Harding blew us away with the depth of his acting by showcasing Ben’s quiet vulnerabilities and strength. John Hartley personifies the deviant wickedness of Gavin. James Joseph’s portrayal as the demon is something we never knew we needed. Him tauntingly singing is hot as hell and freaking creepy at the same time. It’s something dreams and nightmares are made of! Jacob Morgan as the flirtatious Remi is pure sexiness. Watch out #jeddy fans, you’re in for a treat. Rosie’s story has only just begun… we can’t wait to see what Kim & Meg have in store for us in Claimed by the Shifters, releasing in February.

“She wasn’t mine to keep, but what would happen if I could never let her go?”

This beautifully dark novella is the prequel to The Mate Games: Pestilence. You really need to read this BEFORE Deal With A Demon as it bridges the gap between explaining what happened to Rosie at the end of the first Mate Games series and how she ends up on the run in middle of nowhere Alaska!

This follows Rosie a human/vampire hybrid who has bravely volunteered into an arranged marriage to save her brother from having to pay a blood debt. Gavin has always fascinated her but the pull she feels towards him could be her undoing. Gavin is a devilishly dark character with tastes she craves and appetites that could see her devoured... and not in a good way. Gavin and his even more diabolical parents, have plans for Rosie but things could all change when the devil in Gavin see's Rosie as more than just a pawn in his families schemes.

One thing for mood readers to note - I've just finished Deal With A Demon and there's a clear difference in tone between this prequel novella and the start of the series. I found this super noticeable when reading them back to back. When I started DWAD it was like the mood shifted and the series became more jovial, lighthearted with more banter.

I listened to this on audio and the only reason this is 4 stars and not 5, is because I had to listen to Gavin's POV's at a different speed to Rosie's. I found that the timbre of Gavin's narration interfered with the flow of the story. Given you can easily change the play speed this wasn't the end of the world for me. I get that his manner of speaking was a creative choice to emphasise how sinister he is, for me though I prioritised the pacing over the atmosphere.

The next book in the series is...
Deal with the Demon

Promised to the Night is Book #0.5 in The Mate Games: Pestilence. This.... 'is a spicy why choose series that is sure to set your…heart…on fire. If you’re not a fan of grumpy dukes with a penchant for pain, purple demons with fancy body parts, nosy hackers with boundary issues, angsty wolf shifters who like to share, sword crossing, and plenty of group activities, this one’s not for you….’
The Mate Games: Pestilence series by K. Loraine is a red hot, sizzling reverse harem/why choose fantasy, with paranormal elements, suspense, drama, angst, danger, action- and did I mention the SIZZLE??? It got so hot at times that it singed my fingers and steamed up the screen on my Kindle.
From the very first book, the series plunges you into a world brimming with broody, complex characters, sizzling chemistry, and high-stakes drama. Although this is not a ‘light and fluffy’ series, there are plenty of ‘darker themes, plus all “spicy” elements mean that this book/series may not be for everyone. But for readers who enjoy a mix of passion, danger, and supernatural intrigue, The Mate Games: Pestilence delivers, and then some.
Happy Reading…

Promised To The Night (The Mate Games: Pestilence #0.5) by K. Loraine and Meg Anne

Roslyn Blackthorne is promised to Gaven Donahue in an attempt to save her brother from certain death. Rosie is attracted to this vampire as if she sees something he awakens in her.

Once she gets to the Donahue home she is surprised to find they have planned a wedding. Gaven never saw his attraction to her coming. And more he finds out she is his mate!

She sees and heard what the Donahues have planned for her future and she has no choice but to run.

This is a fantastic leap into another series in the Mate Games realm and I couldn’t wait for more!

This was included as a prelude to the start of the Pestilence Series and it is smoking hot! Curl toe rated Hotness by both Stella Hunter and John Hartley.

Where oh where will Kim and Meg take us! I can’t wait!

Gavin just comes across as a selfish asshole who flips back and forth on his own treatment of his wife. He wants her, then figures out their mates so he pushes her away, decides to unload his feelings on a booty call (although it wasn't considered cheating because they didn't have intercourse according to hiw own reasoning??), then wants her again. We don't learn his thoughts on his family's plans for her. I'm So glad she took off because i doubt he would have done much to stop the plans. He came off as an unapologetic ass, blaming everyone else for his actions and am not looking forward to when he eventually gets added to the reverse harem. I hope he suffers and does some major groveling and self-reflection on his own idiocy.

Spice 4/5

This is the prequel to the second series of the mate games. This book helps to make the connection between the two different series. It also helps to set up this series and explains why Rosie decides to fake her death and go on the run. You can read this without reading the other mate games series, but if you truly want to understand everything about this world I recommend the other series first and then reading this one. Another fantastic read by these two ladies and I cannot wait to see how the rest of this series goes.

This was tacked on the end of Deal with the Demon. I liked it. I'm glad I read book one first though. I would not have been on Gavin's side at all and thought him too irredeemable. It helps that the pure evilness from his side are his parents. He's more of a morally gray character than a straight up villain.

This was a prequel to the Pestilence series and was included in Deal With the Demon. It explained a lot about the relationship between Roslyn and Gavin and his sucky (pun intended) family. It also cements the theory that Gavin may be one of Roslyn’s fated mates. I was impressed at the length of Roslyn’s letter to Gavin in the short time she had to compose it. Something like that would take a whole lot of drafts being discarded before I’d be able to finalize it.

I loved this little look into Gavin and Roslyn’s relationship. It’s definitely a must read before diving into Deal With the Devil. Being able to understand the dynamic between these two will ease you right into the next book. And it doesn’t hurt that their chemistry is off the charts.
