Detective Toby Clarke’s day does not begin well. He is to investigate the kidnapping of a missing toddler, Joshua Banks — the latest in a string of cases.
Toddlers are going missing. In their place, a note that warns what will happen if they call the police along with a number to call. The number is for a previously targeted family.
Toby ropes in Detective Petra Merrow to help investigate, but it’s not going to be easy. None of the families are willing to talk.
Then the case turns sideways — little Joshua Banks is found murdered. Will another innocent life be lost?
Meanwhile, Petra is living in fear of retribution from the Perrins crime family, and the villainous Kyle Sykes, who would like nothing more than to see her dead.
Petra and Toby are in a race against time to solve the case — and bring a killer to justice.

It did take me a couple of chapters to get into this book. The characters are well developed, believable and we get some more background information. The story covers: kidnapping, child death, suicide and torture. The pace is steady throughout. Merrow and Clarke are bonding better now that they are working together more. I also liked the way the story ended. This book could be read as a standalone.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #JaneAdams for my ARC of #Kidnapped in exchange for an honest review.
I have not read book one in this series yet, but did not feel the lack. The author does a terrific job of giving readers just enough information to understand the horrific tension formerly undercover detective Petra Merrow lives with constantly, always looking over her shoulder for an attack from Gus Perrin, while DI Toby Clarke is still recovering from almost dying from a gunshot, delivered by one of Gus' men.
These two police officers are brought together to investigate a kidnapping of a wealthy family's child, which leads them to previous, similar cases, opening up a can of worms and bringing to light a connection with another criminal, Gus Sykes (introduced in book one).
The tension is high, and the author had me hooked from the opening pages, with this story of two detectives under tremendous pressure, surrounded by who knows how many corrupt cops, journalists, and just out right criminals.
I was intrigued by the ending, which shows Petra experiencing some slight reduction in stress, and questions left open (though thankfully no cliffhanger), leading to the next book in the series.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Joffe Books for this ARC in exchange for my review.
An exciting follow-up to book 1, along with a complex mystery involving a child kidnapping ring. Decent character development for Petra, & smooth writing.
[What I liked:]
•The mystery with the kidnapping was both exciting & complex! The writer skillfully combined that investigation with the ongoing fallout of the Sykes case from book 1.
•Petra had some good character development. She’s dealing with a lot of trauma & not much support, & her reactions & struggles were both realistic & sympathetic.
•Clarke & Petra got more screen time together, & are starting to develop a closer worker relationship as well as a genuine friendship. Lots to explore there in future books.
[What I didn’t like as much:]
•Clarke didn’t get much character development, despite him being one of the MC’s.
•Lauren’s showdown happened a bit too easily. Wouldn’t her enemy have taken more precautions?
CW: torture, kidnapping, murder, suicide, child death
[I received an ARC ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you for the book!]
This is book 2 in the Merrow and Clark series and I would highly recommend you read book 1 first. It does work as stand alone but you will enjoy it much more if you have read Safe and know about Lauren and her past.
Young children are being kidnapped from their beds in the night replaced by a note with a phone number for the parents to ring. The ransom is paid and the children returned unharmed until something changes and a child is found murdered.
Petra and Toby are in a race against time to solve the case but Petra is also living in fear of retribution from the Perrins and Kyle Sykes, both would like nothing more than to see her dead.
This is a fast paced story that keeps the adrenaline pumping and the pages turning all the way through. Many twists and turn and intrigue by the book-full.
The characters are deftly drawn and realistic built to fit the plot perfectly.
All in all a fantastic read that I have no hesitation in awarding 5 stars to.
To the author, Joffe Books and Netgalley for the advance digital copy this is my unbiased review.
Book 2 of the series Detectives Petra Merrow and Toby Clarke. Merrow is on light duties pending an investigation into her previous undercover work and Clarke is also left out in the cold after his injuries suffered in Book 1. Having not read the previous book I do think this affected my understanding of some events so I would recommend reading the first book. Very well written and wonderfully characterisations this was a great introduction for me to this author.
Briefly, when an infant is kidnapped a note is left telling the parents not to contact the police but the phone number on the note is for another family whose child had previously been taken. However, they then contact their friend who happens to be the Chief Constable. In turn he arranges for Clarke to quietly investigate the kidnapping. Clarke asks Merrow to help and they soon discover that this is the latest in a series of infant kidnaps and believe it is the work of the violent criminal Sykes. Then a body is found…
Although I found it a bit slow to start events soon unfold at a dramatic pace with twists and turns at every stage culminating in a race against time to locate Sykes and prevent even more deaths. This is a gripping storyline with both Merrow and Clarke not knowing who they can trust but determined to see things through. Brilliant book with a cracking finish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
I’m sorry I missed the first novel, but have a feeling I’ll be sticking with the rest of the series.
In the middle of the night, a young child is stolen from his cot. When his mother looks in to check on him a couple of hours later, she finds only a note telling her not to contact the police, and giving her a number to call. When she does, she finds herself speaking to another family whose baby was taken and they got them safely returned. When Toby Clarke and Petra Merrow get involved it’s with the knowledge that they have to solve this one – and quickly, before more children are abducted.
Having read this author’s work before, I was pleased to get the chance to read and review this one and soon picked up on what the first novel had been about. There is a lot going on in this one; the crime side of it isn’t straightforward, and it takes both detectives’ best work to get to the bottom of things. I look forward to finding out where these two go next. This is a well-crafted, cleverly plotted story and one I really enjoyed. I have high hopes for this series. 4.5*.
DI Toby Clarke hasn’t seen DS Petra Merrow since the funeral of a man murdered by Lauren Sykes’ father and the inquest into Lauren’s supposed suicide. He suspects Lauren is still alive, something the reader knows to be true since she is now living with Molly and building a new identity. Petra is still in touch with Lauren after she saved the girl working three years undercover with a dangerous crime family and is now desk bound, under investigation for the death of Billy Hunter and waiting for the court case, with the Perrins gang and Sykes still after her blood. Everyone knows Billy didn’t commit suicide after finding out Petra was undercover but was in fact killed by his boss. Sykes, now on the run, tried to kill Clarke too who is still on light duties as a result. So now Clarke has been called to the scene of a kidnap, the fourteen-month-old child of a CEO of a recruitment company. Supt Deans informs him that this is the latest in a string of a dozen kidnaps where the relatives have not informed the police, paying a ransom instead. The ransom note gives the name and number for a previous “satisfied customer” who paid £1m to get the child back safely. Deans is keeping the whole thing very hush-hush, putting Clarke on the case working with Merrow again. They are both feeling this is just not right, and there is definitely something wrong about Deans and DI Mace. Is money the real motive for the kidnap? The father is terrified. Does he know more than he’s letting on? Ricky Evans had a neat little enterprise going on until Sykes murdered his security guard and muscled in but he wants to change the safe way Ricky has been doing things. Ricky wonders if he should have a word with Gus Perrin and get rid of this thorn in his side. The PI employed by one family recently “fell” from the top of a multi storey carpark and a relative hands over all her investigative work, including threating letters and a bloodstained garment. Two dead bodies are found on Sykes’ old dumping ground and suddenly Clarke and Merrow find themselves included in the murder investigation. Then another child is taken and this time it is much closer to home. And everyone is in danger. This was a fast moving and thrilling story from start to finish. I didn’t feel I got to know Clarke and Merrow much outside of their police work but their friendship is certainly developing and I hope will be expanded upon in future stories. My favourite character was definitely the rather wonderful Molly! 4*
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC copy in exchange for a review.
I requested this book without realising it was the second in a series. I quickly got through the first book of the series before beginning this and I’m glad I did. This book follows on 6 months later from book 1 (safe) and I would definitely recommend anyone read that one first.
I really enjoyed this book. It took me a few chapters to get into it but once I did, I was really invested in the story. I liked that it concentrated mostly on Clarke & Merrow and the bond it started to create between them. This book focused more on the investigations and figuring out who was kidnapping children, the connection between the affected families and motives etc. I did find this book a little bit slower than the first, as I said it focused mostly on the detective side of things rather than the gangs activities in book one so it lacked a bit of action and drama for me, that’s one thing I’d have liked a bit more of. I also feel like they could have developed Clarke’s character a little more, it’d be good to find out a bit more about him, his childhood, what made him choose the route he did in life etc but maybe we’ll find that out in the next one. I liked the ending also and feel like the mysterious woman working for Perrins is going to make the next book in the series very interesting indeed. Looking forward to the next but overall a very good read.
An action-packed crime thriller that zips along at a fast-pace and will leave readers reeling from twist after twist, Kidnap is a mind-blowing page-turner from Jane Adams.
It’s 2 am and a young mother wakes up to check on her baby and gets the shock of her life when instead of finding her child in his cot, she finds a note. Baby Joshua has been taken hostage and the note informs his mother not to call the police and to wait for further instructions about payment. There is a phone number on the note which the frantic mother calls – only rather than getting news about her son, she hears from another family whose child was also taken.
Detective Toby Clarke and Petra Merrow are in a race against time in order to get Joshua back. They cannot afford to lose a single second because a baby’s life is at stake and if they don’t find him, then he will not be the last child who will go missing.
I was on the edge of my seat while reading Jane Adams’ Kidnap! Clarke and Merrow will be tested like never before in a case that will challenge them and force them down many a dark path leaving the reader chewing their nails desperate to find out what is going to happen next.
Jane Adams’ Kidnap is a gritty, nerve-twisting and deftly plotted crime thriller guaranteed to send readers’ heart-rate skyrocketing.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Kidnap” by Jane Adams is touted on its cover as being, “unputdownable,” and I thought to myself, “I’ll be the judge of that!” Let me state for the record, from beginning to end, this novel of suspense, murder, and kidnapping is indeed “unputdownable” and so much more!
The novel peels open with seemingly unrelated back to back crimes. The plot centers on a variety of characters involved, most notably DS Petra Merrow, DI Toby Clarke, both of whom are members of UK police force, their supervisors, coworkers, and organized crime heads Kyle Sykes and Gus Perrins. Merrow and Toby have both been injured and ostracized from the force in different ways, (Merrow was deep undercover in the Perrins crime family and has been accused of murder, and Toby is on the mend from an attempt on his life by Kyle Sykes). They are seemingly teamed together to take a fall in the major crimes case to which they have been assigned.
Let me reiterate what an incredible read this is! I was riveted by the plot’s twists, turns, things seemingly related to each other or not, and many climactic shocks along the way to a most satisfying ending. Alas, I only have five stars to give, but I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in suspense, crime drama, mystery, and anyone interested in being captured by this “unputdownable” novel.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for allowing me to preview and review this ARC book in exchange for an honest review.
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Joffe Books for the electronic copy.
This is Book#2 in the Merrow and Clarke series and I really would recommend that you read Book#1 "Safe" firstly to really understand the background. This is a great follow-on - it's intriguing, fast-moving and gripping; so well-written, with good characters you can really get into.
DS Petra Merrow has been side-lined to desk duties while awaiting her internal investigation and a court case stemming from spending three years undercover with a notorious crime family, one of two to which she is linked - the Perrins' and the Sykes'. She's constantly looking over her shoulder, she know they are hunting her. But she knows she got Lauren to safety. When 14-month old Joshua Banks is kidnapped from the family home the father calls the Chief Constable and DI Clarke is appointed to work the case, alongside DS Merrow - only something weird is going on - everything is being kept very quiet, yet they soon get to know there could be more than a dozen cases of children being kidnapped for ransom and then returned unharmed. It begins to look like Merrow and Clarke are being set-up - by who exactly?
There's lots of twists and a surprise or two - any more detail would ruin this multi-layered story for the reader. Suffice it to say, if there is a Book#3 I'll be at the front of the queue!
Having read the first of the Clarke & Merrow series, I was delighted to receive the second one and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. However, I found this one very slow to get started and I did wonder whether I would enjoy it quite as much. Fortunately, once I had reminded myself of the events that had taken place in “Safe”, I quickly got into this one and, as the pace picked-up, I found myself so engrossed that it was very hard to put it down. There was a lot going on, with more than one team of baddies to keep up with, along with catching up with Lauren and finding out how she was coping with her new life. This book is definitely not a “stand alone” as you really do need to have read the first in the series to understand what it’s all about.
As is usual for Jane Adams, this book was extremely well written with great attention to detail and very carefully created characters. She is the master of suspense with many twists in her plots, which always come to a satisfactory conclusion with most loose ends tightly tied up, but always with an opening to lead us into the next one. I would like to thank Joffe Books for sending me this advanced copy which I have enjoyed reading and reviewing and am eagerly awaiting the next in this series.
A baby kidnapped and a race against time. A detective duo with personal issues from their last case. Rival gangs with a personal vendetta against one of the detectives... Kidnap is the sequel to Safe although it would work as a stand alone novel (however Safe was excellent so I'd recommend reading it!) There are mentions of events in the previous book and the plot picks up where it left off. Toby and Petra need to put their recent past behind them to investigate the kidnapping of a young child. But the case takes a nasty turn when the boy's body is discovered alongside a murder victim linked to gang crime. The plot strands begin to interweave... This book didn't have the wow factor of the last book but still managed to shock and was a gripping read. The plot balance was more geared towards the detective side although we did also see the perspective of the gangs which increased the tension as we anticipate their next moves. The emotion attached to the kidnapping of a child is high and will instantly resonate with the fears of readers, replciating every parent's nightmare. The characters all felt very realistic to me and the writing brought them to life effectively. Kidnap was an entertaining crime novel and I will be looking out for the next book in the series.
A young child has gone missing and the parents have been warned not to contact the police however the father knows the chief constable and made the call. To keep things quiet and to conveniently sideline two recovering officers, only the two are working on this. Similar ones have apparently happened before and the children have been safely returned once a large ransom has been paid. DI Toby Clarke had gunshot wounds and is on light duties- something he detests. Petra was working undercover and once out her life was in danger. Together they find ways to work without giving the game away until things take a turn for the worse. Far away is someone Petra has kept in touch with- someone whose life she once saved. The same someone who officially is dead as if anyone knew she was alive her life would be in danger. I get into Jane's books very easily and quickly. There is always a good solid plot and characters easily taken to or even curious about in this instance. They are cleverly written and keep the pages turning comfortably. Strong protagonists that are relatable show a skill of writing and there is always a depth of character. A page turning highly entertaining read.
This is the second in the Merrow and Clarke series .
They find themselves thrown together to look into the case of a kidnapped baby. The case is shrouded in secrecy and Merrow and Clarke begin to feel they have been teamed together to take a fall. It seems this is not the first young child from a wealthy family to be kidnapped , a ransom is always quickly requested with the advice to tell no-one and their child will be returned unharmed . Yes they have been . That is until one of the children, Joshua Banks, turns up dead. Faced with families who wont talk for fear of retribution the investigation is not going to be an easy one. This is a complex and exciting plot, a real race against time to solve the case before any more lives are lost and to bring the killer to justice. A gripping read with a satisfactory outcome leaving the reader anticipating the next book in the series. I know I want to hear more from Merrow and Clarke. Hopefully it wont be to long a wait. Thanks to Joffe Books for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
Kidnap by Jane Adams is the second book in the Merrow and Clark series and I really enjoyed it. However, I do recommend you read the first book called Safe. When, Detective Toby Clarke’s day does not begin well. He is investigating the kidnapping of a missing toddler, Joshua Banks — the latest in a string of cases he has been asked to investigate. Toddlers are going missing. In their place, a note that warns what will happen if they call the police along with a number to call. The number is for a previously targeted family. Then, Toby ropes in Detective Petra Merrow to help investigate, but it’s not going to be easy. None of the families are willing to talk. Sadly the case turns sideways — little Joshua Banks is found murdered.
Will another innocent life be lost?
Will they be able to catch the kidnapper in time?
What an excellent book this was. This one had me on the edge of my seat.
I highly recommend Kidnap by Jane Adams.
Big Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of this book on exchange for a honest review!!

I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley for review and all thoughts and opinions are my own. #1. Safe #2. Kidnap I chose to read the first in series prior to reviewing the second. I'm glad I did so. This is a continuation of the story of criminal rivals and officers seeking answers. In this second Clarke and Petra series, Petra is severely traumatized after occurrences of "Safe". Alive but damaged, she is drawn into a case of kidnapped children. Someone is targeting wealthy families. The threat of violence is very real. Secrets kept hidden may well come out into the light of day if the little ones are to return safely to their homes. How far would you go to protect the innocent? Will it cost you all you are within? Excellent series. Sets the reader up for the next book but no cliffhangers.
I'm really enjoying this new series, you need to read the first book beforehand. Both Clarke and Merrow have suffered at the hands of the same man who is a devious psychopath, nothing ever sticks. He is cruel and has no conscience whatsoever even killing small defenceless children without a thought. His own daughter even hates him and is living far away under a different identity, her father believing she is dead. I was engrossed in the story finding it difficult to put down. The ending was tied up nicely but unbenown to Merrow it seems all is not as she though and it looks like her troubles are far from over. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Book 2 in the series however it may be read as a standalone. Babies and toddlers are being kidnapped from wealthy parents but the police have never been involved until it happens to a friend of a high ranking officer. Due to this, the investigation is passed to Clarke and Merrow who have to work under the radar and are both suffering the aftermath of a previous case. Lots of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing who is doing this and why. Fast paced and a good page turner. Thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC to review.
A good, gripping story that kept my interest all the way through. The second in a series, but also readable as a standalone novel. Well rounded characters whose back stories are told in a succinct way, not too boring if you are following the series. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.
Book 1 tells about Lauren and her past. A new name and a new life, always afraid there will be retribution from what she has fled. Young children snatched from there beds, a note is left. Keep quiet pay the huge ransom and child is returned What happened when one child was not, the reason and how it unfolds Another chilling tense story by the author. Given ARC. by Net Galley and Joffe for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Book two so enjoyable. So gripping, this series will blow your mind away. I loved it chapter after chapter, as all the characters blend together its hard to pick a favourite. It took me a few chapters to take to this book and decided to leave it and go back into it and I am glad I did. There's nothing more to say as this great book came to a cracking end .
A very good read, but it does follow on nicely from Book 1, so best to read them in order for maximum enjoyment. It combines the tough world of gangsters with the emotional wrench of child kidnapping. I thought it was intricately plotted and woven together. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
Excellent reading,, finding some small clue but then putting those clues together and making a decision to put an end to endless suffering,, that is Who pulled the final trigger. Getting her away from her Merciless Father was the clue that haunted Petra but, finally the Saved Daughter was the answer to ALL.
DIDN'T CARE FOR THE WRITING STYLE, STORYLINE JUMPS FROM ONE PERSON OR PERSONS SUDDENLY. THE STORYLINE HAD TOO MUCH GOING ON IN EVERYONE'S LIVES PAST & PRESENT. THE MAIN CHARACTERS THE GOOD OR BAD ONE'S WERE SO DEPRESSING. AT 11% I WAS SO BORED, I KEPT STOPPING TO DO ANYTHING BUT READ THIS BOOK. I COULDN'T WAIT FOR IT TO END, NOT FAST PACED, NOT ADDICTIVE FOR ME. ;<
The wealthy are the target for kidnapping young children and returning them after collecting a huge ransom. All done quietly without involving police until one parent calls his police friend for advice.
Wow! What a Fantastic conclusion to the first book in this series 'Safe'. Fantastic fast paced story, believable characters and terrific ending. Really hope this isn't the last. BP Sheffield.
Merrow & Clark #2. I don't like stories about child kidnap (I was warned on back cover) and add in crims targeting police and / or their families, and you have a DNF. Too dark for me at the moment. No rating.
