"Succeeds in showcasing all the strengths of 1980s war thrillers, with a grand, sweeping scope and with action that makes you grit your teeth at how visceral it is" -Alexander Wallace, Sea Lion Press "… A lot more plausible than some other World War III novels" -Fuldapocalypsefiction.com
The year is 1992. Over twenty years have passed since Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev was assassinated by a crazed gunman. Since that time, the Soviet Union has been put on a course toward economic success—and war. In the Balkans, Yugoslavia's collapse into ethnic violence draws NATO and the Warsaw Pact to the brink of Armageddon. Armies deploy and fleets maneuver. Political intrigue engulfs Moscow and Washington, and paranoia radiates from the Iron Curtain. In the zero-sum game of Cold War, neither side can afford to blink or back down.

A conflict nearly fifty years in the making spills from boardrooms and back alleys and explodes into open battle on land, air and sea. The showdown of the century is East versus West with the future of mankind at stake.

This was an author that I was made aware of thanks to a Facebook group that I had joined (Military Thriller Book Group) a little over eighteen months ago.

The novel Blue Masquerade is book one of a two-book Iron Crucible series (the sequel being Red Front), and is based upon a "limited conflict" in the former Yugoslav territories by the Soviets in 1992. The Soviet forces had massed in Hungary, waiting for the opportunity should it arise to provide support for the Serbs as NATO forces were attempting to provide peacekeeping efforts in the embattled territory.

An unfortunate navigation error by an American commander provides the impetus for the Soviets to commence the invasion that had initially been planned by the Politboro in the years previous.

The story provides differing viewpoints as the points of view vary from "The Troika" (a three-man faction in the Politboro) to the President of the United States to the commanders of the ground forces of both sides, from the captain of a Soviet Kilo-class diesel submarine to that of a news crew as they travel throughout the conflict trying to get their story.

The Allies, led by the United States, fought a stopgap war in an attempt to delay the rapidly advancing Soviet forces with both sides facing horrific losses of both personnel and equipment as the Soviet advance continued.

One of the major losses that the Allies faced was the loss of "Asgard", a Yugoslavian air force base that had been built within a mountain which curtailed the Allied air superiority. This loss was further compounded when the American aircraft carrier, Gettysburg, was critically damaged by a lone Soviet Kilo-class submarine (B-218) that had managed to sneak in amongst the carrier battle group, which had also provided the remaining launching platform for the Allied air cover.

The first book of this series ends with the American President Simpson attempting to broker a peace treaty with the Soviets (without leaving the bad taste in the collective mouths of the American electorate that the defeat in Vietnam had only a generation previous). As he flies into Sarajevo in the middle of the night to sign the military draw-down agreement, Air Force One is shot down by one of the still-battling Serbian units, led by Lazar Jelic (a minor character from earlier in the book who came back to play a major role in this story).

I would rate this short novel (only 291 pages) a solid four stars out of five which I believe would be enjoyed by readers of Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising or Harold Coyle's Team Yankee, as the story showcases a lot of the strengths of war thrillers of the 1980s and which is a lot more plausible than some other World War III books that I have read (especially as the conflict starts in the Yugoslav territories much as World War I had previously). US and Russian protocols and equipment are very detailed and the requisite extensive research is evident throughout.

While the novel is well-written for the most part, there are frequent minor errors, but the story has major twists that will keep readers involved.

The ending is a cliffhanger and I am eagerly looking forward to reading the second book in the Iron Crucible series, Red Front.

As with all my literary ramblings, these are just my five cents worth.

A good read if you like reading about the U.S. get it’s rear handed to us

The military was portrayed as ineffective smurfs reacting to every Soviet move and fumbling everything.
This is supposed to be the same U.S. military of the early 90s, though they were portrayed as if they were Iraqis of the same era. Or any era for that matter.
Admittedly, the pompous American politicians were pretty convincing.
But the book lacked a strong military lead character, for the U.S. forces anyway. The Soviets on the other hand were all Anatoly Karpovs and Boris Spassky-esque in seemingly every move.
Overall a disheartening read. However, the twist at the end is enough to lead you to want to know what happens next.
In that sense I guess the writer accomplished a goal every writer has — to get you to pick up their next book.
Though I do hope the next one improves on the characterization and actualization of the U.S. military. SPOILER
I mean really, a single Kilo class sub getting inside and entire carrier battle group and taking it down? Please. That’s AOC and The Squad level wet dreaming right there.

Blue Masquerade is one of the best in the genre.

I was skeptical of this novel, as I felt it was based on a flawed premise. The idea of a NATO vs. Soviet Engagement in the 90s was an open and shut case of a NATO ass whipping. By the 90s, the Soviet Machine was starting the downward spiral that we see fighting in Ukraine today. TK erased my doubts in the first few pages. I thought “Brilliant!” and I was hooked.
In this book, Blackwood shows a near flawless ability to write not only, amazing battle scenes, but also to write very human characters. You care for these people, and you remember their names. And (spoiler alert) sometimes you are saddened by their passing.
There are twists in this book that you just don’t see coming. And when they hit you, it’s like a bucket of cold water. Just shocking. I can’t recommend this book enough. If you like Military Fiction, Cold War Goes Hot, or just Alternate History in general, this is a must read!

Short but gripping cold war gone hot military thriller!

I was searching for something to break up what I had been reading recently and thought about rereading Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising when I came across Blue Masquerade recommended as being something similar. At under 300 pages and having some good reviews is seemed like it was worth a try and it didn't disappoint.

Set in an alternative timeline were the Soviet Union hasn't collapsed we see them getting involved in trying to secure Yugoslavia as it breaks up, but their intervention draws in the US and some of its NATO allies.

The narrative switches between multiple viewpoints, from journalists on the ground, politicians on both sides and military personnel involved in the events.

This is book one of two

This is not a stand alone book. One crisis ends and another starts. I am not really a fan of that unless it’s made clear this is a series.

This is a story about a border war between Russia and the US the 1990’s.

The point of view is mostly from the Russians.

It’s a solid war story with a lot of action and interesting characters.

It is definitely worth a read.

Realistic combat scenes

Combat scenes from the ground, air, & sea. Interesting perspectives from both sides from politicians & the men in combat. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

US forces butt kicking.

Not used to reading books where US forces get their buts kicked by Russia even to extent of where Air Force 1 is blown out of the sky. Hope Pentagon reads it.

Alright, this is a very entertaining and believable WW3 scenario. None of the Characters are stupid for the plot, but act and make mistakes in believable and at times tragic ways. I listened to this on Audible, and I’m listening to the next one on Spotify as they’re all on that platform.

A good book

This is the start of a good story. Keep writing but remember in war Rock Paper Scissors. There are only so many of each weapons systems in a division.

Very boring beginning. Too much on the Russian side for my liking. The self important idiots with their “highlighters” are very annoying.

War drama

As far as a good read goes, not a fast starting book, but the last few chapters were gripping. Will have to continue with the next book now...

Not using actual Aircraft Carrier names was kind of a downer to me. A few other areas where my suspension of disbelief was challenged. But overall a pretty good yarn.

Title – Blue Masquerade
Author – T.K. Blackwood
Genre – War/military
Word Count - 81,500
Rating – Five stars out of five

My Impressions: Excellent account of the horrors and unexpected mistakes of war.
Main Characters:
Andrei Gradenko – Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Jean Carson – Reporter for AP.
Pete Owen – Cameraman.
Jelic Lazer – Serbian Lieutenant, 20 y.o. Prisoner with future important role with unintended consequences.
??? Williams – Marine Corps Lt. in Yugoslavia who makes an innocent but horrible mistake.
Captain Yessov – Russian Commander of submarine B-218.

The story begins in 1992 much like today’s headlines with Russian troops massing to invade Yugoslavia instead of Ukraine.
An unfortunate mistake provides a reason for Russian forces to begin the invasion their rulers had already planned.
A news crew is in Yugoslavia, and they flow in and out of the action as bloody, high body count battles ensue. Their interview with a captured Serbian Lieutenant, Jelic Lazer, is short and they wonder if he will be murdered after they leave. He lives and escapes to appear again later in a key role in the twisted plot.
Heroic actions take place throughout the gruesome tale as soldiers give their lives to save others or make amends for past mistakes.
The US and its allies are hard-pressed to stop the invading Russian forces but do slow the advancing war machine even as horrific losses of human lives and equipment take place on both sides.
A fatal blow is given the allies when the Russian submarine B-218 inflicts a battle changing attack on several US Navy ships.
The ending is a cliff hanger, so another book is surely planned to follow.

The editing and sentence structure are okay but with frequent minor errors
Character Development is good for the main characters
Details and extensive research of US and Russian protocols and equipment are evident throughout.
The plot is typical war story but has major twists to keep readers involved and wanting to flip pages.

I highly recommend this superb story of world war.
