We All Fall Down

Rate this book
Hg34, a super virus, has scorched the earth of many of its inhabitants. Those unlucky enough to still be wandering the streets must fight for their survival.

Choice becomes an illusion and the fate of millions rests uneasily in the palm of President Virginia Hill’s hands when she runs for, and wins, the presidential election. Civilization is crushed into dust when the President does the unthinkable and poisons her people.

Libby and her six-year-old son team up with brothers Lincoln and Gideon, one a drug dealer with conspiracy theories on the brain and the other an ex-con. They struggle to survive as they search for answers as to what happened and what to do next.

A Fantastic Read.

We All Fall Down by Jen Bernardini was a real page turner for me. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but I was completely engrossed by it. The world she built, and the characters she brought to life, gripped me from the beginning right until the very end. I really enjoyed her writing style, which made for an enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

First of all, if you've read Jen's last terrific novel, Mirror in the Attic, don't go in expecting a similar experience. Instead go in with an open mind. This one is part of a trilogy, and what I feel here is that we have a very strong opening to something quite special, with characters you truly root for. Jen doesn't hang around with you getting to know them. Now, I want to say that I was lucky enough to beta read this so I've seen it grow and reshape, and this is proper good work and commitment all the way.
Well, what's it about you ask?
Okay, so it's about a virus, it's about survival, it's about family and unlikely friends, but it's not another badly timed pandemic story if your thinking along those lines. It's a lot more than that. This was written long before any of this covid carry on began.
It's a great story with good ideas running all the way through. The chapters are short and always straight to the point. The pages fly. You'll also have no idea where it's headed. Always a big plus. Pick it up. I think you'll enjoy it.
A well deserved 5 from me.

Update.

Even better on Audible.
Just finished listening to this to and from work.

Uniquely engrossing and utterly real.

I couldn't stop reading the story, couldn't. The characters were believable, all people we've met before. The situations they find themselves in will at times feel familiar while others are entirely unique. Regardless, it all reads fresh and just doesn't let up. Bernardini did the impossible by besting her Freshman effort Mirror in The Attic, no small feat as that book is an absolute gem.

Another enjoyable read by Jen Bernardini. This is one of those books that sneaks up on you. In the sense that you can’t really pin point what’s coming next. I applaud the author’s ability to go there and not hold back. Gideon was a highlight of this story. Now that’s a character that you root the whole way. Perfectly crafted and I couldn’t help to his POV sections. Normally this type of book isn’t something I would gravitate towards but this was a pleasant surprise. The execution was well done and the story was overall enjoyable. There are some trigger warnings that you must read before diving in. Don’t let catch you by surprise like it did to me 😅 don’t jump them like I did. Anyways pick it up and have fun!
