Thora Scattergood and her friend Amy Green are now happily settled in the small Pennine town of Hanbury, running a photographic studio. Though a respectable career for the young ladies, and a popular new innovation in 1860s England, taking pictures is merely a cover for their real work.Thora and Amy intend to become Lady Detectives and hope that eventually they will have some interesting cases, rather than their current one, which is looking into a spate of dog-napping. Thora especially, is looking forward to an exciting career but without paid detective work, she is reduced to investigating any sort of vaguely suspicious behaviour in the people around her just to maintain her interest. Her insatiable curiosity eventually uncovers a strange case of suspected attempted murder and another of bigamy. Then her father, Dr Ernest Scattergood, is accused of poisoning one of his elderly female patients, and Chief Inspector Tiplady is forced to investigate, putting his tentative relationship with Thora in jeopardy. Suddenly the games Thora has been playing take on a deadly significance. Will Dr Scattergood prove his innocence and can Thora ever forgive Tiplady for suspecting her beloved father of murder?
I've loved all of these books about Thora Skattergood. Her character is a headstrong woman beyond her times. She has a wonderful mind in working out puzzles about others that seem beyond fantasy to just dreaming up a way she thi is a crime or something bad that was do e or is about to be done. Except that she really sees the simple solution to why, & how to solve the problem. All the characters around her are so well written it actually takes you back to the time they are in. I've loved all of the books written by Suzanne! She keeps you involved with each character in in the books. Starting with the Underhill series through the Lazarus series, and now with the Thora Skattergood series! I just really hope that this isn't the last of this series!! I also am hoping that she continues with the Lazarus series, there is far to much more to tell in these series that I want to know! I could do with more about the Underwood series also, hint, hint. Bringing the characters into these other books is amazing & I just loved how she I cooperated them into the further books. I'm so looking forward to more about all of these wonderfully written stories.I've had some of the best entertainment reading them all, thank you so much to this wonderful author.
Love the smoothness of plot laced with humor and romance. You always get a good look into the regular lives of the different classes also. Up and onward Suzanne Downes!
