Mara, the daughter of an Irish clansman, was raised to believe the men of the North are heathens - murderous pagans without a moral bone in their bodies. Despite warnings of the Northmen's raids, and the growing threat of another incursion, Mara is continually drawn to her favorite place - the River Shannon. Dægan Ræliksen, a wealthy chieftain from Norway's frozen fjords, secretly discovers Mara at the water's edge. He is charmed by her beauty and sensuous grace. As the days pass, his contentment with simply watching her grows thin. He can no longer deny his unabated desire for the young maiden. His search for a wife has ended. However, Mara and Dægan come face-to-face in a time when Ireland is in turmoil - when every Irishman is being called up to fight against the Nordic foreigners. In these times of upheaval, how can Dægan make peace with Mara's father and acquire the woman he treasures? Furthermore, can Mara move past her fears and find the noble man within the savage?

Book 1 4.5 stars.

An Irish princess who catches the eye of a Viking Cheiftian. He watches her for weeks and decides she will be his bride. As he watches her, determined this day to reveal himself and profess his love and desire to make her his wife, a fleet of viking ships approach and he now has to save her from a potenital bad situation.

And here the story begins. It is a beautiful and tragic tale. I can't wait to start the next book.

What I liked was the amazing amount of research the author must have done both of Viking and Irish history. The romance was beautful, I loved Daegan, He was just beautiful. Mara was likable, but clearly not as developed as Daegan. I wish there was more detail of her life and who she was. We only get a few glimpses. She is young, 19, but I still feel there should have been more personality about her. The secondary characters are even more developed than Mara IMHO, or at least have some personal traits about them that make them seem more cohesive. From what I can see, it looks like book 2 will go deeper into her character.

The story is slow to progess, and the real action doesn't come about until towards the end. This is not to say the book was boring by any means. I didn't skim at all. I loved all the time Daegan and Mara shared together.

There are a few twists I didn't expect and some that I saw coming.

Highly recommended

Unique, Well-Told Viking Tale...But get the sequel for the end!

I love a good Viking story and sadly, too many publishers these days want only Regency or Victorian romances. But the Viking tales still call to me and I’m glad they are still being written. Here’s a new author who is giving us great stories. This one is superb.

Renee Vincent writes with lyrical prose. It's truly beautiful. And she tells a good tale with attention to historic detail that will satisfy lovers of historical romance. This is an unusual Viking story in that there is no raid, no pillaging, no taking of women, none of that. No, our hero, Daegan Raeliksen, a wealthy merchant chieftain from Norway, is an honorable man who makes his home in Ireland. It is there he first sees Mara, daughter of an Irish king, riding her horse near the Shannon River, and it is there he decides he must have her for his wife. It’s love at first sight for him. He only takes her from her lands to save her from a band of warring Norsemen. And, of course, then he must keep her until he can safely return her to her father. Daegan knows he should have permission to wed and to pay the bride price, but he can’t wait to marry Mara and she’s not complaining.

RAELIKSEN is a complicated tale of betrayal (Daegan has an evil twin brother), and deception with a few twists and turns you will really like. However, Daegan and Mara's love is never in doubt. The ending will rip your heart out so that you MUST buy the sequel.

This is going on my Best Viking Romances list and I recommend it.

You should also note this is first in The Emerald Isle trilogy. The sequel is MAC LIAM; and the third is THE FALL OF RAIN (a contemporary with a descendent of Daegan's but harkening back to the first). Due out in December 2012, is THE TEMPERATE WARRIOR, the story of Gustaf Ræliksen and Æsa. I can’t wait for that one, as I loved Gustaf in MAC LIAM.

A hauntingly beautiful tale that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Dægan, a great warrior and chieftain, has decided it is time to settle down. Not only will this appease his mother, but if he finds an Irish bride this will appease the truce he has with an Irish king thereby keeping the land obtained for his people to live on. Dægan has fought in many wars, but he’s never fought for the love and safety of one woman. His patience, bravery, skills, faith, and heart will all be tested, but will it be enough?

Mara’s life as a carefree, spirited, princess will soon come to an end. Unbeknownst to her she’s being hunted. Enemies of the crown have landed on her father’s shores and are pursuing to kidnap her for not only ransom, but for an ultimate power bid. A chieftain is hunting for her affections as he’s seen a side of her that appeals to him. A secret admirer not only hunts for her to rescue her from harm, but also to gain her attention and perhaps she will finally ‘see’ him for that man that he is. Meanwhile her father hunts for his missing daughter offering much for her safe return. However, none of these hunters realizes the fight they will encounter once they capture her.

The plot is cleverly complex and exciting and just when you think you've figured this story out, it takes you in a whole other direction keeping your heart pounding, the tears pouring, and on the edge of your seat. I really appreciated Ms. Vincent's knowledge of the people and land of this time period as the images came across crystal clear. The scenery was completely vivid and will take the reader away to places they never thought they would experience. The characters were not only engaging but they also felt very real. Dægan and Mara refuse to let anyone or anything come between them and the lengths they go to for one another is admirable. Too many supporting characters to name and praise for making this story what it is… captivating.

This is my first read by Renee Vincent and she has undoubtedly earned a place on my auto-buy author’s list. This story has all the makings to being a wonderful screenplay for what I can only imagine being an absolutely gorgeous movie. This book and author earn my highest recommendations and I feel privileged to have read one of the best. It is a must read for any lover of historical romance or even lovers of romance in general.

AUTHOR: Any “outstanding” historical fiction author always does their research. Author Renee Vincent did a superb job! She knows how to play on emotions and you “will” become a part of the book. She does not hit you with one (1) perilous situation, she keeps it coming and coming and coming. You cannot possibly put the book down.

SYNOPSIS -
Book #1 of the Emerald Isle Trilogy. 10th Century. Northmen (Scandinavians) have started settling in Ireland. Daegan is known as a Northman (possibly Norseman). Mara is Irish. Most people in Ireland think that Northmen are barbaric. For now, that is all you need to know.

This book gets (5 out of 5) Stars. Elements of a Romance Book TEST =
2 central characters, 1 male, 1 female........................YES;
One or both of the main characters are in peril................YES, YES;
They work together to resolve the situation....................YES, YES, YES
Some amount of conflict and resistance in working together.....IN THE VERY VERY BEGINNING
The perilous situation brings them together......OOOO LA LA….HELL YES

PASSION SCALE: This book gets (4) ASTERISK because the level of romance totally compliments the passion. That means “the two become…cough cough…One! It will make you tickle and not in the throat either.
* NOT very descriptive and requires imagination
** WILL make you wiggle a little)
*** WISH it was me;
**** OH BODY, whew;
***** EROTICA and well over the top

FAVORITE PART: The story of the indestructible “Book” and the gifted “Chest”. Wow

LEAST FAVORITE PART: I found that the very beginning of the book dove into romance too quickly rather than allowing the reader to get to really know the characters.

YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE: Historical romance, Vikings, Ireland, Warriors, Christianity in the 10th century (inspiring but “not” inspirational fiction), Scandinavian culture

Honesty . . . Right?

That’s what one looks for in a review. Since honesty is what we are giving here, it’s safe to say that some reviews are much easier to write than others. So, still on my honesty kick here . . . I want to say, this review is NOT going to be an easy one to write.

Where to begin (taps chin).

Daegan Raeliksen, the stuff dreams are made of . . you know, the good dreams! On a mission to find a wife, who would ever turn him down? Mara, unknowingly captures Daegan’s heart. When things happen that throw Daegan and Mara together, he sees this as his chance to win not only her heart but her father’s trust. Things don’t always go as planned . . .

Now here is where my troubles come into play. I don’t want to give you a step by step play of this book, and ruin a single thing for you. Let’s just make a note that this reader LOVED this book. Every single one of the twists, turns, and Oh. My. Goodness. Moments. When you are finished are reading, may you find yourself sitting in shock asking yourself if that really just happened.

So, on that note . . grab your book and settle in for some marathon reading. Once you start your aren’t going to want to put it down.

I liked a lot of things about this book, and I would give it a solid 3.5 stars. The descriptions of the beauty of Ireland were fantastic, as well as the relationships between the Irish and the Viking invaders. The battle scenes toward the end were wonderfully descriptive, definitely some of the better ones I've read, and that's saying a lot because I love books about medieval warfare. That being said, the romance in this book was very simplistic to me, like romance lite. I didn't really feel the chemistry between Mara and Daegan, which is too bad because the rest of the book was really, really good. I do plan to read the next one in the series, though!

This book gripped me from the very first page, and I can not say that about very many others.

It starts at the Shannon river in Ireland where a handsome viking is secretly watching the object of his affection. He has his whole life planned before him and she is to be his wife, yet he has yet to introduce himself. How primitive, but intriguing. His name is Dægan Ræliksen and he will from this day forth be carried in my heart and I know already how hard it will be for me to find another character who will match him in his wits and charm. This was my first viking romance novel, and I am quite happy to have shared the experience with him. :)

The twists and turns in the plot kept me propelling forward and each quite unpredictable. It only took me two days to read. I kept watching the page numbers fly by thinking that I didn't want it to end but it would to my disappointment. The action scenes were far better than anything on television, and what I enjoyed most about this book wasn't just the steamy love scenes, but that of all of the characters who played a role. It is the first time that an author has not only made the hero and heroine likable, but every character that took part on the pages were funny and well rounded. I caught myself laughing various times and crying at others. Each character moved me in their own way and I find them unforgettable.

Mara, the object of affection was brave and noble. She was everything a heroine should be in a book, and even though the books life span was only that of two week, I could tell that she truly loved Dægan with all of her heart, and that their love would span through many lifetimes thereafter.

Dægan's friends all devoted their lives to him and hung on his every word. They were more like his brothers than just his comrades. Nevan was also an endearing character that genuinely captured a piece of my heart. He is kind, intelligent, and his loyalties to Dægan make him very likable. Nevan is a king and it shows in his actions and words, yet his generosity firmly roots him to the ground like any common man. I think I liked that best about him. He gave fatherly advice to Dægan and allowed him his temper tantrums without judgment. They each had understanding of one another even with very little conversation between them. One Christian, the other Pagan. Two men from two different faiths, yet together as one unmissable force.

One particularly memorable conversation from the book between two characters describes Dægan perfectly letting you know the hold that Dægan has with everyone he comes into contact with:

"I swear Dægan could convince a bird its wings are more suitable for swimming in the sea if he so wanted."

That was Dægan's friend Tait describing him to Nevan, and as I wiped away tears, that very sentence made me laugh again. This book was a bit of an emotional roller coaster for me, and that is the exact ingredient, in my opinion, that makes for a wonderful romance novel.

The ending of the book is not so satisfying because the author is paving the way for the second book in the series. I would have much preferred Dægan & Mara's story to continue on, but sadly it doesn't. I sobbed like a baby.

Reading the reviews on amazon for the second book in the series, I was much disappointed with so many spoilers, that I do not think I can bring myself to read the second book now. Not only that but I have a very hard time with the idea of Mara with another man. I prefer keeping a memory of just her with Dægan. But that is just me.

I will however read the third book in the series because it gives the promise of a reunion between the two souls & that for me is grand.

The only thing that I didn't like about this book is that Christianity seemed to play a bigger role than I would have liked to have seen. I am a Pagan and it was hard to see that Christianity was cast in a much brighter vision than that of my ancestors. However, giving the fact that Dægan found eternal peace in the end, I can find it less offensive. I understand that it adds to the books historical integrity, and religion played a much bigger role then than it does now. At a time when death was inevitable and war so monumental, it was the person's soul that was mostly feared for. One never knew when they would draw their last breath and it was important that they lived their lives according to the laws of whichever God they served and that their faith remained unwavering.

Beautiful story, and well written. I would highly recommend at least this first book.

"I will wait for you. Forever and a day. I will wait for you."

"Truth to be told, I am no one. Just a man who bleeds like other, and sins as much as the next."

"You have made me believe that love is stronger than a sword arm and more eternal than the last breath of a dying warrior on the battlefield."
[...]
"I am where I want to be... in your arms... waiting the start of another day...wether it be here... or in the next life... I will wait for you... Forever and a day. I will wait for you..."

Sunset Fire is a beautiful viking story filled with everything but a HEA...oh how this book gutted me. So many feels. This is not your typical bodice ripper historical romance. The author spins a tale so real you feel as if you are in the middle of the fiecre battles as well as the warmth of the love between Mara and Daegan. Highly recommend!

I’ve always loved the familiar images of Ireland – the rolling greens, the castles, the fog and cliffs and lore – but I’ve never been there. Or I hadn’t, that is, until I picked up a copy of Renee Vincent’s RÆLIKSEN. From the first page, one thing was abundantly clear.

You don’t read RÆLIKSEN. You experience it.

Renee Vincent’s portrayal of 10th century Ireland is nothing short of stunning, but it’s the depth of the characterization that is so vivid, so enchanting. Dægan Ræliksen and the lovely Mara – who counters his introduction with such feistiness that he’s heckled thereafter for the mark she leaves – pounce from the pages and into your heart from the moment you meet them. Dægan’s adoration for her is so pure, such a display of innocence from a man who has long left innocent behind, that you can’t help but fall in love with both of them from the first page. I dare say there’s not a woman alive who wouldn’t melt under the appraisal Dægan makes of Mara, but his eyes are clearly for one woman.

One woman who, by all accounts, can never be his.

RÆLIKSEN is a love story that’s shaped not only by the land and the sky, but by the poignancy of a rich and brutal history. Renee Vincent doesn’t exploit this history, nor does she make light of it. It simply is what it is, and the facets are so intricately a part of the story that they exist as one. And therein lies the masterpiece. Every word of this story has meaning. Every moment leads to the next. Every word is simultaneously natural and brilliant, each one holding an unmistakable place in history with the telling of this tale.

And what a tale it is.

I admit to getting misty-eyed every now and then when I’m lost in the pages of a good book, but RÆLIKSEN had me sobbing. Not once, but twice, and the full body-wracking sobs that scare husbands, who wonder if they’re better to ask what’s wrong or to back out of the room and pretend they never saw a thing. But as such, this story is an astounding thing of beauty. Every heartfelt word poured onto the page came from a place inside me. Renee Vincent has a way of touching the human spirit, of getting to a place in her readers we never expect to be affected, and certainly not with such profound longing and contentment. There is no walking away from the intimate journey of RÆLIKSEN. It becomes a part of you. It lives on.

It could be no other way.

Needless to say, Ireland in 916 A.D. is a world far removed from what’s familiar. Lovers of historic fiction will find a quick place in the rich detail Renee Vincent paints, but even readers who have never ventured beyond their own time and space will find a home within these pages. Writers are often told to “show, not tell.” Renee Vincent takes it a bit further … you feel it. You feel every moment of Dægan Ræliksen’s story – from the burning heat of a love affair that’s both demure and intensely erotic to the bitter ache of betrayal and loss, you will live and breathe and love within these pages. Long after you close the last page, the words will linger in your soul.

Once you’ve experienced RÆLIKSEN, you could hope for nothing less.

In a word: WOW.

I stumbled upon Renee Vincent quite by accident online, and after discovering she was a fellow Kentucky gal AND wrote historical romance, I had to purchase the first two books in her Emerald Isle Trilogy. It took a while for me to finally get to Book One in my reading list, and I'm so glad I did.

It had been a while since I'd read a historical romance, especially one set in 10th century Ireland. I can't claim to be a history buff, but every detail, from Viking customs to speech patterns rang true. The writing is exquisite, and the characters grew on me, even most of the support cast, whose numbers weren't scanty.

The story begins with young Mara, an Irish princess who has caught the eye of Daegan Raeliksen, son of a Nordic king. It's love at first sight for Daegan, but not for Mara, who believes that all of his kind are murderous and cruel. He saves her from a horde of his fellow Northmen, whisking her as far from them (and consequently her home) as possible, and deciding that on the way, he'll convince her to fall in love with him and make her his wife.

Their journey together is one of extreme peril, betrayal, and war in the midst of their compelling and heart-wrenching romance. You can't read this book and NOT be rooting for this couple to find peace at last. The love scenes between them were simply beautiful, becoming bolder as the two of them explored their shared passions.

Daegan was wonderfully cast as both hardened warrior and tender lover when it came to Mara. Even though she was young and naive, she brought out the best in him. Especially endearing to me was how she encouraged him to finally embrace the faith of her God and let go of the violent nature of his pagan gods. As any man worth respecting, he was also devoted to his family, particularly his mother and younger brother. I got pretty teary-eyed on a few scenes he shared with them.

The only issues I had with the book were pretty minor. Within some scenes, the point-of-view changed from one character to the next abruptly, which was a little jarring until I got used to it. Also, at the very beginning, I wished Daegan had more incentive to fall for Mara other than her just being young and pretty while she rode her horse by the River Shannon. She did grow from naive princess to a strong woman by the time the story was over, which pleased me greatly.

I have to say, there were points that I ranted and raved, laughed, cried, and pounded my fist on the table. But, I won't offer spoilers, because you just have to experience Raeliksen for yourself. I'll be reading the next two in the series, MacLiam and The Fall of Rain as soon as I can.

I highly recommend this book for any historical romance fans out there, particularly if you enjoy Irish/Nordic settings. It won't disappoint!

A passionate work of historical fiction and a gripping love story set in 916 AD where the tensions between the Irish and Scandinavian foreigners from the North serve as a tumultuous backdrop. By choice and perhaps by providence Daegon Raeliksen, a sea merchant and Northman, spys an Irish beauty down by the River Shannon and is determined to make the woman his wife. Their first interaction is far from what he planned when the beauty turns out to be as fierce as she is lovely. Daegon has little time to contemplate his broken nose, however, as mortal danger descends upon them in the form of rogue Northmen raiders. Forced to flee for their lives, Daegon vows to protect Mara and return her to her family as soon as it is safe, and thus starts their adventure.

Raeliksen is a story of getting to know thine enemy and breaking down cultural barriers. As their attraction to each other grows, Daegon and Mara face many obstacles and conflicts inherent in these turbulent times. Ms. Vincent’s writing paints beautifully and realistically the setting and place, and reflects the in-depth research done by the author. Betrayal, murder, revenge, and ‘edge of your seat’ battle scenes are tempered with tender (sometimes steamy) love scenes that carry the reader along effortlessly.

The author renders the story with vivid sensory detail and description. In fact there is an especially memorable scene featuring a whiskey barrel. Also interesting is the history of the Aran Islands (Inis Mor) off the coast of Ireland and boat craftsmanship that’s nicely weaved in without bogging the story down. Even the exploration of monotheism vs polytheism isn’t too heavy handed.

Though Daegon is a peaceful merchant, his roots and duty as a warrior are never far from the surface making him the ultimate hero, and therefore, this book hard to put down. This is a Viking love story that is both heartfelt and timeless.

Kudos Renee Vincent! I am definitely looking forward to the next books in this riveting viking series.

“Raeliksen” by Renee Vincent

Daegan's life changed when he layed eyes on the beautiful Mara, a King's daughter. He knew right then at first sight, that he was going to marry her. After hiding for some time and watching Mara from a distance, Daegan decides to make himself visible to her. Introductions take place, but right then therafter they are both spotted by an enemy ship. They now must hide before they are captured. Daegan knows what is important to him, and that is protecting Mara from harms way. In order to keep her safe, he must protect her and evade the enemies that are hunting them.

Before returning Mara to her father, the King, Degan will try seducing her into being his wife. Will he return Mara to her father unharmed, or will Daegan lose the most important person in his life and be sentenced to death for for kidnapping the King's daughter.

What a beautifully written book. This book is full of so much love and sacrifice. I loved everything about this book. Not once did this book lack with excitement, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I was enthralled with this book and loved learning about Deagan's life. I loved how Renee captured every detail of Ireland and what it would like live in Ireland back in those days. This is such a magical book that will capture your heart and your attention. A must read for everyone. Fantastic job Renee, I look forward to reading Book two in this wonderful series.

I wanted to take a break and read for FUN... Every once in a while I like to go off the beaten path from all the reads I have promised to read and just grab something. I know Renee Vincent is not a new author, but she is new to me. After a little Twitter back and forth, I went to her website and checked out the blurbs for her historical series and decided I would give one a try. Only thing is, after reading the first one, Raeliksen and being left a crying mess, I had to jump right into Mac Liam for my own sanity, once I was left in a much better state of mind, I grabbed The Fall of Rain and once again was gasping for air. I loved this Trilogy and I wanted to share it with you.

What is it that kept me coming back? Hmmm well let's see... Hot Vikings, ancient Ireland, beautiful princess and battles are a few of the reasons. Maybe the awesome story... in addition to the fact that I have never read something quite like it.

In Raeliksen, we find Daegan Raeliksen, a wealthy merchant and a chieftain in his own right, in search of a wife. Daegan. In his travels, Daeaen has come upon the beautiful Mara, a Irish woman wandering the countryside on her own. Days go by and Daegan watches Mara as she spends her time near the shore. He is captivated by not only her beauty, but her essence as well. Daegan doesn't realize, but Mara is the daughter of a Irish King, regardless of that fact, the merchant/ chieftain has decided in a his infinite wisdom, that Mara is to be his wife.

When Mara's life becomes endangered, Daegan must act quickly to save her, in the process, whisk her away, or basically kidnap her. Raeliksen is an epic tale of the determination this larger than life man has when it comes to what he wants and the woman that at first seems the shy bit of a thing, but upon closer observation is quite the strong character. Be prepared for tears in this tale as well as deep, dark secrets that come to light.

The powerful and moving love story of Daegan Raeliksen and his Lady Mara will resonate long after the last page is read. This is historical romantic fiction at its best, written by an author inspired by the legends and lure of ancient Ireland and Norway. Renee Vincent has brought to life a turbulent time in history when cultures collided and to the victor went the spoils! Only a love story as intense as "Raeliksen" could match the true passions and intrigue of tumultuous Ireland of Olde! Daegan is a charismatic Northmen, a world-traveling tradesman, and a leader of his people. One look at a beautiful maiden who visits his favorite secluded woodland spot takes his breath and steals his heart. He soon learns that she is Mara, daughter of an Irish king, a woman who should be forbidden to a Northman. Daegan is not a man to be denied, and fate and undeniable love soon set in place an adventurous course of events. When two hearts truly love, no risk is too great to keep that love safe. The timeless melding of two souls in spiritual and sensual union is both poignant and passionate. I so look forward to the next book in the Emerald Isle Trilogy, "Mac Liam", and then to the concluding third book, "The Fall of Rain"! Not to be missed!

"You have made me believe that love is stronger than a sword arm and more eternal than the last breath of a dying warrior on the battlefield."

Raeliksen is a beautiful viking story filled with everything but a HEA...oh how this book gutted me. So many feels. This is not your typical bodice ripper historical romance. The author spins a tale so real you feel as if you are in the middle of the fiecre battles as well as the warmth of the love between Mara and Daegan. Highly recommend!

"I am where I want to be...in your arms...waiting the start of another day...whether it be here...or in the next life...I will wait for you...Forever and a day, I will wait for you..."

This is the first story of a trilogy and I read all three. This story takes place during the Viking invasions of Ireland and Mara, daughter of an ancient Irish chieftain, is saved from marauding invaders by Draegon who had come to Ireland in search of a wife. Himself, a Norseman, it was unlikely that they would end up together but through many life-threatening events they did. The story draws you in, keeps you there with its sweeping detail, its emotional content and believable characters. It begs you to read the next one!

This is an amazing read!!! The pace of the storyline is excellent. It starts off quickly and moves along at the perfect speed from there. Mara is a most unique heroine as you'd never expect her to be a princess from her actions. As for Dægan, he is my kind of hero. Hard enough to protect what's important to him yet has a gentleness when he's with his loved ones. There are enough twists and turns, secrets and surprises to keep you turning the pages til you find that you've come to the last words. Glad there are more books in this series!!!

Well, this is embarrassing! I was happily reading it when my free kindle decided my time was up and it took it away! I was half way and totally absorbed in it once I found the time. The characters were believable and easy to imagine. I truly felt for both main characters and wanted to see how it ended for them. I will try and get this again to finish the story, but felt the author deserved a rating now.

What a well written story! I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. I thought the story moved a long at a decent pace and it had a little bit of everything. Though I'm a bit heartbroken over the ending, and it will take me awhile to try and move on to book two in the series, I would definitely add this to my bookshelf. Renee Vincent has done a fabulous job!

Oh, but I hate when the end is not happy!!!
But this book is really good, so I give it 5 stars.
I liked much more the hero than the heroine. I cried at the end... I didn't want to read about his death... Why, of why did he have to die???

I am not a Romance reader, but thanks to Renee Vincent, I won't automatically write- off HISTORICAL romance novels. This novel was extremely well researched and so detail- rich it is easy to picture oneself living in Ireland at the time of Norse occupation. I highly recommend it!
