Rate this book

It is not as daunting as we might think. World-changers start with a heart open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and a willingness to do as he asks.

Ideal for small groups, Bible studies, and church classes, this kit includes a copy of the book One Small Step , a DVD with an in-depth video for each session, and a participant's guide to help members hear the Holy Spirit's voice and obey his nudges. Also included are small step activities to participate in, throughout the study and beyond.

Boldly embrace the life-changing adventure of becoming the hands and feet of Jesus to the people right outside your front door. You will soon discover that "random acts of kindness" are not so random after all.

[Note:  This book was provided free of charge by Chosen Books in exchange for an honest review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

This book is probably best for those who meet one of several qualities.  Are you fond of and knowledgeable of the history of the Assemblies of God?  Have you heard of the author before and are you fond of the Dream Center and their activities in the Los Angeles area?  Did you know that the author was the son of a famous minister (who, sadly, I had not been familiar with)?  Are you interested in hearing more about the author's life and fundraising efforts and only a little bit about the Bible itself?  The more of these questions can be answered in the affirmative, the more it will be possible for the reader to enjoy what this book has to offer.  The more the answers are answered in the negative, the more difficult it will be for the reader to care about the author's own adventures in following God's judges because of its limited applicability in applying to the life of the reader.  As is frequently the case when reading a book where a memoir is marketed as a Christian living book, one's interest in this book depends to a great extend on one's existing interest in the author.

This book is about 200 pages long and after a foreword by Jentezen Franklin as well as acknowledgements and an introduction, the book consists of thirteen steps that appear to be based at least in part on various twelve-step programs that help addicts.  The author talks about the importance of following nudges (1), changing one's life (2), and steps that one thinks one cannot take (3).  After that there is a discussion of making everything a big deal (4), small steps that are life-changing (5), and stepping on toes (6).  The author discusses stepping out of oneself (7), what you do when you feel you cannot move (8), and small thoughts (9) that can have a big impact.  There are chapters on having the attitude of a servant (10), taking risks (11), looking to the future (12), and leaving a local legacy (13).  In all of these chapters the author discusses his own life history as well as his own actions as a pastor and urban missionary serving the poor and drug-addled in the Los Angeles area.

One of the ironies of this book is that although the author talks a lot about being less selfish, this book is intensely self-absorbed, and it is unlikely that the author has the requisite self-awareness to realize that his problems with being easily provoked and being too consumed about himself are not only problems of the past but also, at least if this book is any indication, problems in the present as well.  Over and over again the author expects the reader to care that it was difficult for him to grow up as the son of a famous pastor even if that meant he became a pastor at the age of twenty when, if his present maturity is any indication, he was definitely a novice.  The author touts his own commitment to the area he is in as well as his fundraising skills and the help he got from his father.  All of that is well and good if you can enjoy those privileges and benefits, but alas, not everyone can.  It is unclear if the author was intentionally trying to write a lot about himself or if he actually thought he was saying a lot about God's workings that would be of interest to a wide audience.

I have been blessed by God's nudges many times in my life. Some of the time I want to ignore them but when I realize they are coming from God I try to follow knowing my path will be blessed.

This book speaks to those times when God nudges (or tells)us to go a certain way. Do we follow or do we struggle and, possible, get lost. By following God's voice the way is a blessed way.

I was given this book by Chosen Publishing in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Matthew Barnett guided me down a path that led me to examine my dreams, purpose, God's will, and my own faith. 'One Small Step' is the push we all need to live in abandon and serve others.

Now, how can all my attitudes and life seconds change the world? That's for me to decide...

In One Small Step, Matthew Barnett explored the power of taking just one small step to make a difference in someone else’s life. In this book, he discussed we can have Holy Spirit encounters that nudge us into reaching out to help others. He opens up by sharing how he started the Dream Center and how they have made a great difference in their community. The dream center is located in Los Angeles. It a four hundred-thousand-square-foot hospital type building that provides a place to live for the addicts, homeless, veterans, victims of human trafficking, and kids who are aged out of foster care. It’s free of charge for them. In the book, he discussed how he was the son of a megachurch pastor, Tommy Barnett and how he saw his own father take small steps for Christ.

He shared how in 2016 they faced an impossible problem and he considered calling it quits after twenty years of ministry. They were running out of money and he decided to cash out some of his retirement to make payroll that month. He shared how he had to tell his whole staff and had to admit they are nearing failure and he opened up to readers about he had to make a choice to choose faith over his fears. In the book, he also revealed the story about how he decided to run a world marathon challenge on every continent for a fundraising event for the Dream Center. He shared how he had to deal with his fear of his blood clots returning. Throughout the event, he shared the challenges he faced and how he chose to keep going until the end of the marathon.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to follow God’s nudges and to make a difference in someone else’s life. I immensely love how Matthew opened up about how he started the Dream Center and how much of an impact they are having in their community. I connected with how real he was in sharing the small steps he had to decide to take. One of my favorite stories that he shared was the story of a young boy, he met at his daughter’s track practice. He was holding his stomach and he was complaining that he hasn’t had food in a long time. So, he decided to give him some fruit and he told him that this was super fruit and this would help him to achieve his best time ever. He ended up finishing third and had his best time ever. He shared how he made this a big deal to celebrate and encourage this young boy and he also brought him a hotdog and chips to celebrate. In this example, Matthew shared how we all have the power to influence and we can choose to make a big deal out of stuff that can have the potential to change other people’s lives for the better. If you’re looking for a new book on taking small steps and following God’s nudges, then read this book!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and was greatly encouraged and inspired by Pastor Matthew Barnett to take the small steps and to do the small things. It was refreshing for me and just what I needed in a world where the message seems to always be “bigger is better” and where quantity seems to be too often esteemed over quality. I also really appreciated the honesty, authenticity, and vulnerability that shone through the entirety of the book. Overall loved the book, was greatly encouraged, blessed, and inspired by it and highly recommend it - especially for anyone involved in serving in any way.

This is an awesome, amazing book. I am so glad when watching The Mike Huckabee Show and Matthew's interview. When Mike told about Matthews book, I immediately purchased his book. I am so glad I did. it has been a great inspiration for me. I read, cried and prayed. In the words of Jerry Clower, author, said, quote "Ain't God Good." What more can I say? To God be the Glory. Amen
