And here we have yet another case of me reading the abridged version of a classic when I was little and not realizing it until years later. I thought all this time that I had actually read Little Women, but after I discovered the incident with the abridged version of Pride and Prejudice, it got me thinking. So I said to myself, 'huh, Little Women was kind of short maybe I should check if it was abridged'. Well what do you know. I had read the abridged version. And I hadn't even liked it that much as a kid. So now Little Women (the unabridged version this time) is high up on my TBR and I'm hoping to get to it soon!
Also I just found out that my library has the beautiful Puffin classics edition of it and I can't wait to see it and read it!
I read this years ago and decided to pick it up and re-read it since the new Little Women movie came out recently. This may come as a shock to you, but I've never read the unabridged version of Little Women, only this adapted version for young readers. So, since I didn't remember much about this edition of Little Women, I decided to re-read it and if I liked it, I would pick up the unabridged version and read that.
Aside from a certain event being cut out (people who have read the unabridged version may know what I'm talking about), I think this edition is great for kids that are just getting into the world of literature and need something to read!
I only read this because it was $1 at walmart, but it wasn’t too bad. Of course it was nothing compared to the normal version, but for young readers, it’s cute. Super quick read, only 180 pages. Overall, was it good? for the target audience, yes. was it bad? no, even for someone a decade over the intended audience’s age. Glad to check this off of my list, super quick read, pretty enjoyable for what it was.
I wanted to read this condensed version to see if I was interested in reading the actual full-version and I've decided I will read it! Very cute stories of sisters who are close and go through life together, learning lessons along the way.
4⭐️ very good and quick read. the illustrations throughout were very slay and cute. this book is very different from the actual book; beth does not die, laurie is not (outwardly?) in love with jo, and amy and jo do not end up together. however, as this is a kids book i think the changes were necessary to keep with the idea that the main aspect of this book was the lessons being taught. also, sorry but amy is my least favorite character? idk, just the pride at the beginning was eh. further, aunt march can go somewhere. i understand the idea of marrying rich was common for this time period, but thinking john is only in love with meg because of her aunt is sinister! ugh, get a grip. anyways, i enjoyed this book and i think im ready to move up in the world (the actual book). will be giving this book to my little sisters to read, i think they would enjoy it. might edit the review later with their thoughts!

It looks more like episodes in a cartoon, all smiling and happy and sometimes sad with a happy end. Works well for children since the episodes never forget to praise morals and good deeds.
I decided to read this young reader version of Little Women one time when I was between books. This book follows the lives of four sisters and their mother. Each go through ups and downs and navigate their way through different phases of life during the length of the book. This family has plenty of love but very little money. It is an old-fashioned book about appreciating what you have and learning values in life. The values learned in this book transcend time and help aid in reflection of what we so often come to take for granted in life. This is a great light read. It makes for a great book for pre-teens to read, especially if they aren't up for reading the full-length version. Reading this version made me want to read the full version of the book. I also like how their are nice basic pictures on every few pages, so even a younger audience can enjoy it.
This version of Little Women, tells the stories of four sisters. Their father is off fighting in the war, and the book follows their adventures while he is away. The sisters make new friends, fight with one another, grieve as they watch their older sister begin to fall in love, and learn what it means to work together in hard times and to give to those who are in need.
I really enjoyed this book! I loved that it was about four sisters, because I myself have three other sisters. I related to the many fights the sisters had and the times that they made up.
This book would be great to read when talking about relationships. This book focuses on the relationship between siblings. A teacher could add other books that focus on other types of relationships as well.
I received this book a few years ago for Christmas and read it for an English project.
This is a story about 4 sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March, and how they deal with life in Concord, Massachusetts, in the early 1860s, while living in poverty, and their father is at war.
I thought the book, although shortened and probably better for kids younger than me, was a good overall book. I find, though, if told in a 1st person point of view, it may have a slight bit more emotion because it would be seen through the girls' eyes instead of a narrators.
I would recommend this book to 7-10 year old's looking for good literature to read, but not too long or having too many difficult words to read.
(This is not the full book and is instead an abridged version)
Here is why I took two stars off 1- the story was very choppy in both writing style and content, it jumped wildly from plot to plot with very little in between. 2- because of this, the content felt very glossed over and I could not enjoy the characters, nor differentiate between them. The writing style was very impassive and hard to connect with what was going on.
However, I love the messages in the book. - being content with your own Blessings allows you to make room for bigger ones - doing your part in the household - challenging yourself to be more fruitful in character.
Overall I would not read the abridged version again, but it is a sweet story with a lot of Godly messages about being like Christ.
I love the Little Women story from when I first watched the movie with Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst ages back, and when I found this copy of the story for free, I nabbed it awhile back. Unfortunately I only just realized as I went to read it that this is an adapted version, so even though it made for a nice quick Christmas read, I'm sad I'm missing so much of the story. But I look forward to getting a proper copy soon!
It's probably "cheating" to read the version adapted for young readers, but I had a copy and have never read the original. Though there are some details that are omitted/changed probably to make it more youth friendly. At least now I have a basic understanding of the story beyond what I know from the episode of Friends where Joey & Rachel read each other's books. Does that mean I have to read The Shining next?
This was the first time I remember having read any version of Little Women, and I loved it! I love how the characters grow and learn from their mistakes. This book really teaches some good lessons without seeming pushy in any way. I am keeping my eye open for an unabridged copy of Little Women, since I enjoyed this condensed version so much. In the meantime, I plan on reading this book again soon, as it was such a joy to read the first time.

Written as a 28F. I picked up this “junior classic” from Aldi because I am obsessed with the 2019 film directed by Greta Gerwig and I have always wanted to read the book by Louisa May Alcott, but was always too intimidated by it.
I will say… now I feel like I have to read the full book. I can’t tell what was cut from the original book for the junior classic’s readability/appropriateness, and what was added into the movie for cinematic value.
I love how classical literature lets you eavesdrop in on the past. It's like the closest thing we have to a time machine. I've never read a book with so many life lessons to be learned. This was the junior version of "Little Woman." I have to admit I found the book interesting. I'm very inquisitive when it comes to books and will read books from almost any genre. Happy Reading!
My grandma gave me this book in 2009 and I only just now read it for the first time. It's had a surge in popularity recently because of the new movie, so it put it back on my radar. I always knew I was going to read it since it was a gift from her, so this seemed like the perfect time.
This edition is the children's version so it's condensed and not the whole story. I don't by how much, what might be missing, or what is different, and I've never read the original so I have nothing to compare it to. However, this version is either very targeted towards children or the original story was as well because every chapter had some kind of important lesson. The story went in chronological order, but it was more like a collection of stories about the family because each chapter contained its own events, and to conclude each one, some kind of advice was given.
So overall, the characters were okay but it's not something I enjoyed all that much. It makes me interested in knowing what the original book is like, but at the same time, it kind of turns me away from it because would it just be a more drawn out version of these life lessons?
It is indeed an easy read, I am looking forward to reading the longer version and believe lile a fellow reader had commented that it will get you started on knowing if you would like to read the bigger version. Easy yo follow along, type is not small and the pictures are a bonus
3.5 stars I read this junior adaptation with my 11 year old daughter. It really only covers the fist half of the original novel, which was fine since the more traumatic events happen in the second half of the original novel. We enjoyed reading this and plan to see the new movie when it comes out!
Easy read since it was meant for younger readers. I enjoyed the story of the siblings. It taught me to be selfish and selfless at the same time. The only thing I don't like was Meg and John's ending. I don't believe it one bit. lol.
This book isn’t the original little women but more of a kids version. I wanted to read this before I actually read little women because when I read classics I don’t really understand but since I read this I might understand the real one better
