Move: And Other Four-Letter Words

Rate this book
Brown's astonishingly mobile life--21 moves in 32 years--shows others forced to relocate that they're not alone in their feelings of desperation and helps them discover ways to move on. Whether for military, corporate or personal reasons, packing up one's whole life in boxes may not be easy but Move helps the reader see comedy in chaos and meaning in mobility. Most Americans move eleven times over a lifetime. And the basic demands on time and energy that stem from earning a living, family obligations and the basics of eating and sleeping continue unabated. Brown addresses the additional complexities of virtual single parenthood, variations in educational systems, dealing with separation from one's spouse and reunion, adjustment to new cultures, emptying the nest and retirement. Move also opens a window on a world totally unfamiliar to many, the life of the military family. For all who relocate, whether military or civilian, Move is a parable of hope.

A hilarious romp through the career of Air Force wife and dedicated mom Joan Brown. Joan leads us on a rollicking adventure through over twenty "changes of station" complete with losses and breakage, material and spiritual, that inevitably accompany such an odyssey. Through it all, our intrepid wanderers build a careeer and a great family. Thanks to Joan Brown for this vivid view into life experiences that few of us will experience directly.

Oh, the adventures they’ve had! Joan writes about her life as an Air Force wife and so much that she writes about, I relate to as a military spouse and mother. She writes with humor, style and a little bit of sass. Well done, Joan and thank you for your service to our country, as well as your husband’s.

I started this book over a year ago when we were in the process of getting ready to move again. It didn't get finished and then it got put on a shelf and forgotten. I pulled it out and finished it. While an easy ready and definitely a nice thing to know and feel like people understand, I definitely didn't connect with the writing like I had hoped.
