Part of the Words Are CATegorical series. Children's nonfiction picture book about conjunctions. Defines conjunctions and provides lots of humorous examples. The conjunctions are in color to differentiate those words from the other text. However, a number of the examples given are not conjunctions, but really prepositions (such as after, before, until, while, since, etc.). Conjunctions and prepositions are two separate parts of speech, and need to be taught that way.

The rhyming text makes learning fun and the cartoonish art style also adds to the kid appeal of the book; both help to make grammar education more interesting for children. The illustrations provide strong visual support for the concepts presented in the book.

But and For, Yet and Nor: What Is a Conjunction? (Words Are CATegorical)
by Brian P. Cleary

Conjunctions are a difficult subject for teachers to teach. They are the exception to the rule, because they are the flags of the exception. Their use is described, elaborated and used in a harmonious way that enthrall students. the simple images add to the humor, and create connections for students.

As with all the others in this series, I got these to share with my children as a fun and cute way to discuss language and have not been disappointed. They are cute and engaging for kids.

We've really enjoyed reading all the books we can get at our local library in the Words are CATegorical and Math is CATegorical series. We especially love the cartoonish cats.

This one is pretty good, but not our favorite by far. Conjunctions are an interesting part of grammar, but this book has tough competition since I grew up with "Conjunction Junction" (What's your Function?)" from Schoolhouse Rock. It's a tough one to beat! Anyway, we still really enjoy reading these books and will definitely read as many as we can find.

Brian P. Cleary is at it again with a book all about conjunctions. This one certainly doesn`t fall short of his other books. Great examples of conjunctions using rhyming words and lots of humor.
