ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is now recognized as one of the most common causes of learning and behavioural difficulties in school-aged children. Symptoms may include poor concentration, forgetfulness, poor organization, impulsivity, restlessness, poor social skills, learning difficulties, low self-esteem, and defiant behavior. Despite growing awareness of ADHD among parents and health professionals, it is still widely misunderstood.
This second edition of The Facts provides information on how ADHD is diagnosed, on conventional medical and alternative therapies, and on ways of helping children to improve their own behaviour, self-esteem, and academic results. Written by an experienced pediatrician, this book features practical advice to help parents understand their child's difficulties and how to overcome them. With detailed explanations of the cause of ADHD, its nature, and the treatments of the condition that have proved effective over time, this new edition includes developments in the understanding of conditions that often co-exist with it, as well as the problems experienced by adults with ADHD.
The Facts will be of invaluable assistance to parents of children with ADHD and to teachers, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and doctors wanting an authoritative, up-to-date, and practical review of the condition.
A great book for the parents of children with ADHD. As the title claims, the book delivers essential facts about the etiology/diagnostic process/treatment/secondary conditions of ADHD. However, sometimes the book becomes a bit hypothetical, especially during the discussion of the children's inner psychic representations and dynamics.
Quick read (some skimming, cos predominantly about childhood ADHD, as opposed to adult ADHD). Easy and clear to read, explained in layman's terms. Zoomed in more on Section 7 concerning Adult ADHD and Section 2 covering chapters on specific characteristic deficits of ADHD (learning difficulties, social problems, low self-esteem, etc). Overall everything was very well explained and laid out. Made some notes in today's diary.
This book was very straight and to the point in delivering information. It was helpful to see the whole picture of my child’s diagnosis and gave me great strategies to managing her while not making it all my fault.
