I'm thrilled to preemptively declare that Rehab Science is my top pick for the best non-fiction & science book of the year. Over the past two years, I have become acutely aware of the importance of rehabilitation. Personal experiences, including my relatives' knee surgery, fractures, acute lower back strain, and my own hand issues, have driven this point. Previously, as a researcher, I conducted rehab-related studies, but these recent experiences have given me a firsthand look at the patient journey. Fortunately, my prior knowledge has allowed me to positively influence my family’s recovery:

Post-Knee Surgery Recovery: After my mother's knee surgery, she followed my advice and enrolled in a rehab program at a private clinic. Within two weeks, she quickly regained her balance, avoiding prolonged bed rest.
Stroke Rehabilitation: Another relative, who became disabled after a stroke, initially wanted to give up on rehab due to its demanding nature. With my persistent encouragement, she completed the rehabilitation process.
Relying solely on physical therapists isn’t always feasible due to the costs and travel involved. I am hoping there will be a book that allows me to acquire relevant knowledge to proactively help family members and myself prevent injuries and heal better with proper rehab.

Reading the first few chapters was truly mind-blowing. The book answered many of my questions and dispelled numerous myths about rehabilitation, such as misconceptions about rest and pain management. Its high ratings reflect how it met the needs of many people. I highly recommend this book to anyone in need.

A very educational and informative read for those of us who help people in pain but easy enough to follow if you are having some issues and want to try and work through them.

As someone that loves to learn about how my body functions and what I can do to support it, this book aligns perfectly with those philosophies. The hardback version is weighty (think, TEXTBOOK) but full of beautiful, clear pictures and descriptions. Yes, the authors are correct that you'll want to skip to the chapter about your pain, but please go back and read the beginning sections about pain in the body and different types of injuries. These things will probably apply to your situation and the information is also beneficial. For folks that love Tom Morrison and the Simple Mobility Method, this information is in the same vein.

A very handy reference for anyone dealing with a minor injury, and an essential resource for coaches and athletes. I appreciated the time Walters took to explain the theory, not just of rehab science itself, but behind each of the routines (and there are many!). He steers clear of fads and pseudoscience but is respectful in his presentation nonetheless. I have personally used the routines in this book to address several running related injuries, both mine and those of runners I coach (minor injuries--obviously it is still important to see a professional for anything beyond a niggle). I also really appreciated that there is a routine for TMJ. I would (and have) highly recommend this.

This book has been an absolute lifesaver. I have carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, ankles with a history of multiple sprains, knee instability, TMJ and neck pain. This book covers all of this and much more! Each section contains the description of each area of concern, its aggravating factors, signs and symptoms, prognosis, treatment strategy and notes on surgical intervention. It is followed by the exercises which have simple instructions and photos demonstrating each exercise. Highly recommend this book if you're as broken as I am!

An extensive book that looks holistically at the multiple factors that cause and/or affect pain and injury. The author takes his time explaining PT jargon in laymen's terms. Includes a references list, full-color photographs of the exercises and explanations of when in the phase of recovery they should be done.

If you, like me, have been blessed with the fascinating task of managing various levels of pain having been through the system for so long you are no longer keen to approach medical professionals regarding most issues of a physical nature as the discipline to exercise what you already know far outweighs what is gained, this book is like gold dust.

Appearing to have been written for practitioners themselves to digest, it's like having a deep insight into the methods employed without leaving the house you'd otherwise have had to remortgage to pay for the privilege of seeing them.
