In How the Left Swiftboated America , FOX commentator and bestselling author John Gibson offers the first comprehensive defense of the Bush presidency against its numerous detractors. In this provocative political work, Gibson explores who was right and who was wrong in taking us into the Iraq War and a host of other issues, arguing that it was the Left that actually lied while claiming to expose the truth.
Full disclosure, I am more liable to agree with the premise of the subtitle, than not. That being that W. was the worst ever, not that the media made me that way.
I recently read Frank Rich, and we are nothing if we don't seek balance. That being said...if you are seeking a changing or a clarification of the mind, this is not the book. It is more of an exercise in stagnation. If you liked W. this book says "Hell yes!", if you didn't..."There's no way in hell you can believe this stuff!", and if you weren't sure "What hell are you talking about!?!"
Fairly written, but Gibson succumbs to many of the slick tricks he has condemned among his left-leaning opponents. I found irresponsible of him to refer to leftists as "bomb throwers" and "insurgents" in the same chapters that discuss the unfortunate deaths young Americans in the Iraq war. To his credit, Gibson does try to immediately follow what he labels as "leftist" arguments with attempts at refutations. The exception coming in his diatribe about bloggers where he inexpicably discusses the Downing Street Memos. No refutation is offered. I would have like to see him try to make a case.
Additionally, I was unaware that I am incapable of forming my own opinion, simply due to the fact that I am a fan of The Daily Show (the entire chapter dedicated to Jon Stewart\Frank Rich is pretty amusing. I will say that it is hard to take the ex-theater critic, Rich, seriously).
