Dungeon Delving for Loot and Levels #1

Dungeon Delving for Loot and Levels

Rate this book
Waking up in a theme-park world run amok was a bit rough. But leveling up to be an epic hero, seizing a mountain of treasure, and romancing a bevy of beauties isn't too bad.

My name is Danny Abbott. I went to bed thinking I had just another day at the office waiting for me. Instead, I find myself in Dungeon World, a planet-wide RPG-themed amusement park. The monsters are real, the perils are deadly, and the people in charge are long since gone.

Sure, Maintenance Worker sounds like a weird Job to be stuck with, until I find out that it lets me reroll chests, disable traps, and access the park’s hidden paths and back halls. And then I realize the world is my oyster; I can be rich, I can be powerful, and I can romance as many beautiful, exotic women as I want.

Survive. Level. Conquer.

This novel is not appropriate for all ages; it contains descriptions of violence, unconventional relationships, and limitless adventure.

It's a story, and it's a litrpg. But it is also incredibly bland and boring. The humor falls short and the characters are flat. It has a Midwest conservative values sort of vibe, like 90's daytime sitcoms on public tv. Not the good ones, the ones your aunt watched that put you to sleep. Even the smut was dull and seemed written for neckbeards. The writing itself is fine, I think this is just written for very sheltered readers or something.

Starts out as a 4 star book, ends as a 2 star book
This book has an interesting premise, but the author runs out of gas two thirds of the way through. In the end he's phoning it in so hard, that even the fictional characters are sick of this book.
This was a struggle to finish. I'm not interested in reading the next one.
LitRPG, Sex scenes, Harem, Fantasy/Sci-Fi crossover, (post apocalypse?)

So here's the deal, in the 'future' someone builds a giant Dungeon fantasy theme-park, casino, hotel, resort. Think Westworld (the movie 1973) crossed with the Holodeck from Star Trek. At Dungeon World guests can delve realistic fantasy dungeons with friends & strangers for Loot including gear & tokens. Dungeon tokens are the in resort currency and can buy dinner or pay for your hotel room, drinks at the bar, or souvenirs. If you run out of tokens, you can buy more with cash just like the Renfaire.
All of this sounds pretty good, -hell I'd go check the place out. It sounds like Las Vegas with something to do besides gamble.
But Wait, (mild shock!) Something went very wrong at the theme-park (cue jurassic park theme song) The descendants of the survivors now live a more 'authentic' medieval existence in the safer areas of the ruined resort, subsisting from what ever resources the brave adventures can bring back from the now deadly dungeons.
From the start I LOVED this idea! I loved it so much, I was adding details in my mind that were not there on the page. By the end I realized that I was putting more effort into this book than the author was.
I liked I Don't Want to Be the Hero and expected more from this book. The characters are flat, the current (non-historical) world building is totally lacking, the main girlfriend is unlikable, and all the 'clues' discovered tell the back story in perfect chronological order (what a strange happenstance!) I used to want to like this book, then I wanted M.E. Thorne to write a second draft and punch it up a bit. Now I just don't care.
This made the next thing I tried to read seem bad too. I'm having to take a reading break to let the room air out from the stink of this turd.

Great fun!!

I’ve lightly bounced off of the other series that this author has written. They were not bad, but I just couldn’t get into them and stopped after the first book or so.

This book seems different. I really like the story in this one and can’t wait for the next in the series to come out. It is a different take on the average gamelit harem book. The writing is good, and my only critic is that there are some strange word choices for some of the spicy scenes, when the average name of things would work better. The characters are not super deep, but are far from shallow.

Overall, I whole heartedly recommend this book. You will enjoy it!!

I appreciate that the writer made sure to say this is “for men” and for adults.

I didn’t appreciate much else.

I kept hoping something cool would come of the unique class or the gaming because—whew—the whole harem fantasy thing was an eye roll and a half. I will say it didn’t come across as woman hating…so that’s a plus.

Sadly, the lit rpg elements never went anywhere particularly interesting and I didn’t care for the characters so I can’t say I enjoyed it.

What a lackluster ride

You've seen the posters, you've stood in line, and now you're strapped in and ready to roll. You move forward, go around a bend thinking "here it comes!", and then nothing really happens. That's about how I felt with this book .

About half or 2/3 through the story it just went nowhere. The characters are very one-dimensional. Sex, money (and sex), acceptance (and sex). That's it. Those are the three main characters. I don't really feel like the stats, gear, or skills are really explained or fleshed out. They're just kind of there.

There was an interesting seeming reveal to the story, and I would be interested to see where that goes, but I just didn't enjoy the rest of it.

There were some punctuation errors and some weird formatting, which are overall minor.

In short, this is "A Small World" not "Space Mountain." Not much to see or do, flat characters, and just plods along with sex or references to sex.

I heard this is passable, let's see.

This wasn't too bad, shame about the item rigidity use, but it was enjoyable. I will pick up the sequel and maybe look at the author's other books (there was one I was on the fence about for some time).

This genre has so much potential and yet authors are more than happy writing the same story with a semi new theme. Lacking in the real world, a man becomes a hero with a harem. Yawn...

Meh, it was an alright story, had a few tiresome tropes though. I especially hate when the father/brother threatens bodily injury or death to the MC 'if you ever hurt my daughter/sister'. Yawn.

Taking a break from longer works on my phone, I've decided to sample from the flood of self-published litrpg books. Decided I would try out a bunch of them and see if any are actually... good. So this review is based only on what I could download as a free sample - about the first 30 or 40 pages.

The premise is (as I have learned from reading the intros of some other litrpg books) almost a template for the genre: ordinary dude without much preamble gets yanked out of our world into a fantasy world where he suddenly becomes an RPG character and has to survive.

Dungeon Delving for Loot and Levels is more explicit than most, in both senses. First, the characters actually have stats, which are periodically displayed in stat boxes on the page. There are literally points in the narration where the characters check their stat boxes to see where their Hit Points are at and what new skills they got for leveling up. The people in "Dungeon World" talk about classes, levels, and Job Upgrades like these are just a natural part of the world. The author provides a little bit of explanation for this as the MC discovers that they are actually in some kind of abandoned multidimensional theme park (look, Steven Barnes and Larry Niven did this better in the 80s with Dream Park). The MC also gets a Unique Job (naturally) as a Maintenance Worker - i.e., he's got meta-powers, as if he were a park employee.

The writing was okay. Not quite pro level, but at least at the upper end of fan fiction quality. The dialog was usually not too cringey, but the character development was mostly a collection of tropes on a sheet.

Okay, so this book also falls into the category of "harem lit." If you haven't heard of it, you can probably get the gist from the name: the target audience is very explicitly young men, and in a harem lit story, the MC always ends up with a harem of hot female companions. In the sample I read, he had already hooked up with the first girl he met on Dungeon World, a gorgeous redhead who becomes an "Ember Mage" (basically, a fire wizard), and seems destined to hook up with the second girl they add to their party, a fox girl. Yeah, for some reason these books also seem targeted at a furry demographic. There is one explicit sex scene in the first few chapters. As porn writing goes, eh, it was not terrible, but please find some other word besides "honeypot."

Basically, this was a good intro to the genre and all you need to read if that's all you can take. But I admit I can kind of see the appeal if you want a quick hit of literary crack and you grew up on virtual RPGs. Like, I probably would finish this book, but not sure I want to pay for the full book.

So I read up to halfway through book 3 before I just got too bored to try and finish. The first book was pretty interesting, it wasn't great, but above average, the rest of the series, not so much. It was just so monotonous that I found myself zoning out, and once I finished a game of Teamfight Tactics (my go to when listening to an audiobook) I'd realize I don't know what happened the last 30 minutes because of how bland it became. This isn't really an issue for me most of the time when gaming, I can usually listen and play just fine and never be lost or miss many details.

The voice acting was pretty good for the most part, other than hearing "DANNY!" a bit too often the VA'ing was solid. The harem though...not so good. They are all super boring and other than the first girl he meets being a gold digging leech, they all feel like the same character; it's pretty bad when the only one I truly remember well is only because she straight up won't admit feelings and tells him she's latching on for sex and to be rich, and that's not really a trait I'm interested reading about. The last nail in the coffin for me was the egregious amount of terribly boring sex scenes. It's like every 2 hours there's a sex scene and it's basically the same shit as the previous ones, like if you're going to add a ridiculous amount of ero in the book, make the scenes more interesting at least, not just ground and pound over and over again.

At the end of the day, it wasn't the worst thing I've ever read, it's just disappointing because if the author spent a bit more time refining the pretty good skeleton he has, it could have been great. 2/5 for me, with book one being the best, maybe a 3.5 if I'm generous. I'm too lazy to write reviews for the other two books though.

At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.

Genre: LitRPG Harem story where MC is teleported to strange dungeon focused LitRPG world

Power dynamics in harem: Harems are common in society and the girls lust for, trusts and listens to MC
Explicit/adult material: Explicit and well done. Fox girl.

Summary:
Danny wakes up in what seems like some weird mix of a theme park and a D&D dungeon. When he uses a damaged orb to unlock his class he unlocks maintenance worker a class that clearly isn't intended. On top of that his class and many things he encounters are glitched. Together with 2 sexy girls Danny sets out to become the best and richest dungeon runners in this new world, and if the happen to figure out some things about what is going on with the glitches as well? Even better!

Narrators
Voice diversity: The voice diversity is great and matches the characters well.
Pacing and intonation: The story is expertly told with great use of varying pace and intonation.
Sex scenes: Very well done.
Top notch narration all around. The glitch sounds are exceptionally well done and had me literally laugh out loud at first.
Overall Narration: 5 / 5 stars.

The book’s strengths.
- The writing is fun and had me laughing out loud more than once.
- The absurdity of the world and how we slowly get to know it. It felt like a fun sexy bioshock.
- Who doesn't love a kitsune and I love that her race has more meaning than just her looks.
- The fantastic narration

The book’s weaknesses.
- The handling of "how to initiate the harem" is a little hand-wavy, but is a minor part of a great book.

Overall: 5/5 stars

This book shows potential with the setting and details behind how it came about, but none of the characters are all that interesting. Also, the main character thinks he falls in love with other people after just a few days of knowing them and asks them to move in. That behavior is not treated as weird or used as some sort of joke in the story. Instead, it is taken seriously, and some of the characters say that it makes the main character just more perfect. Either there is something in this world that is seriously messing with peoples' thoughts, or the author has a messed up view of human interaction. They also focus too much on sex stuff. I have read other LitRPG books with harem and sex parts in them, but I don't think those parts happened so often or for so long. This author should give up on writing about "romantic" relationships and sex stuff. The world is really interesting, and I want to read more about it. If not for the world, I would give up on this series. It is interesting enough to keep me reading into book two at least. Also, some books with sex scenes have the characters do or say important things in them, but this book does not. The author should just release a clean version of this series where they cut out all of the sex crap. Nothing important would be lost. I am going to skip those scenes for book two. This book is hard to recommend, but if you are interested in isekai LitRPG taking place in a theme park world with no employees running it anymore, you might find the book worth the read, especially if someone were to release a clean version.

Not great.
It's the kind of GameLit where everything has stats, but stats don't really matter. You receive overpowered armor? That mob is still going to deal half your health in damage with one attack for some reason, and your allies without your overpowered armor are still only taking roundabouts the same amount of damage that you do.

The romance part of this story is terrible and didn't need or want to be there in the first place. Some parts of it is fine, but the story honestly suffers from having dialogue like "I know we only met 1 day ago, but I totally love you!" and "We've only known each other for 1 day, but I don't know what I'd do without you!" especially when it's repeated every single chapter.

For all this story tries to tell itself that it's a "dungeon story" with "gamelit mechanics" it's really neither. 80% of the story is about "broken stuff" that doesn't function like it "should" according to the story, which means that all the "dungeon" and "gamelit" parts of the story go out the window, as stats don't do jack and mobs are just crazed constructs.

I wouldn't really recommend this story, it's just written badly.

The story and world which gets explored in this series ended up being the driving force to keep me reading and to actually finish the book.

I found myself struggling to stay engaged at the start, in no small part due to the flow of the writing and the formatting (with constant spacing between short paragraphs). I started finding simple proofreading and spelling errors as I progressed, but held out to try and uncover more of the intriguing plot and dynamic world which has been created.

I am happy to read any number of spicy scenes between characters, but the imagery and metaphors employed became rapidly grating. It would have been nice to condense some of the intimate scenes and either look for alternative descriptions throughout, or to speak more plainly instead of leaning heavily on one or two overused metaphors for different body parts.

Lots of fun Here

What can I say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The premise is fun and interesting. And probably doesn't lack for Upcoming sequels. Though it is a harem book or series that doesn't seem to take away from the Overall Fun of the story. It is still a light litRPG. The system they work within is a bit unusual limited and many ways possibly unlimited. However there are problems and hence the story. Glitched nanotech... This should be fun to fix. Overall much of the book was spent learning about the world and the system as our new MC came to understand his new life.... Of course considering the beautiful ladies he's involved with it's certainly came with some perks. Fun book looks to be a fun series looking forward to the next book.

a interesting story

this light RPG story was interesting the way the author wrote it it was a little bit of a transportation to another dimension and an RPG. it has an interesting World building and the three main characters were interesting. the male lead in The Story was a nice guy but for someone who has played tabletop RPGs was a little bit slow every once in awhile about what was happening and I thought it broke the focus a little bit sometimes for me other than that it was a fun read and I enjoyed the spicy times as well.

Gah! I knew this was going to be harem and sex, but it sounded like a fun story. And it totally was. The dungeon world theme is a unique idea and the story is definitely interesting. Just skip past the juicy stuff if you don’t like it. The story is still fun.

General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

A Dungeon Game World

Danny is from Earth, but the issue is which Earth and which year.
He wakes up to find hes in some different place then where he went to sleep. After wondering around he ends up in a dungeon and is found by dungeon divers...
The battles are numerous and fun. He has the beginning of a harem that like diving with him too...

This was so much fun to read and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Genius! Absolute blast of a read!

Loved this book!
From the start it grabbed my attention and only got better as the thrills, mystery and adventure grew.

The overall revelations regarding the nature of the world and how the dungeons were created is brilliant and I'm definitely looking forward to more!

One of the best dungeon delver books I've read!

This was surprisingly fun.

Dungeon world books can go very wrong, very quickly. The theme park idea giving this a 'West World' vibe and the set up being very simple all make this a quick, fun read. I can only hope that the story stays simple to match the characters, overtly complicating this could unbalance the story badly.

Great concept.

Loved the concept of book. I am not a fan of sexual content in books. Author did warn of it in description but I read it anyway. Ruined the book for me. Without it I would rate 4 stars. Also, why does the protagonist always seem to hook up with the first girl they meet? Desperate much?

a little easy

Both the harem and the plot. The narrative has a very narrow focus, making it all feel a bit obvious and simplistic. The plot has promise, but it never really develops much. MC doesn’t have the power to ‘fix’ the problems, which is pretty much the point.

I can’t really recommend this one. It’s not horrible, just not great.

A different take on the litRPG. The theme park take was different and interesting. There were sex scenes but it was not all about it. The action was interesting.

Better than I expected, and a good entertaining read. Specific system was a sufficiently original take that it stood out from many other books in the genre. Looks like there will be more books, so I'll definitely give the next one a try.

I was expecting a lazy fetsh book, but this is really, really good. The setup, plot, writing, world and characters are all really interesting, engaging, and likable. The fetsh stuff is even good 🤯.

This one's a recommend.
