(500) Days of Summer: The Shooting Script

Rate this book
The official book tie-in to the acclaimed romantic comedy from Fox Searchlight Pictures, an audience hit at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, 10 Things I Hate About You) and Zooey Deschanel (Yes Man, The Happening, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

"This is a story of boy meets girl," begins the wry, probing narrator of (500) Days of Summer, and with that the film takes off at breakneck speed into a funny, true-to-life, and unique dissection of the unruly and unpredictable year and a half of one young man's no-holds-barred love affair.

In addition to the complete screenplay, the Newmarket Shooting Script® book includes an exclusive introduction by Director Marc Webb, exclusive forewords by Screenwriters Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber, an 8-page color section, production notes, and the complete cast and crew credits.

-What happened, why didn't they work out?
-What always happens,Life.

Summer was no bitch,my dear friend..
He just never really took the chance when he could :)

OMG...Just finished thsi MOVIE! So BEAUTIFUL!

Defiantly a long time since I saw something this good. This movie in 3words -classic -hilarious and touching. :)

This movie's plot is basically built around, how a guy fall in love with a girl and thinks that she is 'THE ONE' and how he ultimatly deals with the inevitable heartbreak.

I loved Tom ..Ireally did.His Nativity, his innocence and his want for love made his character so very relatable. He's the rare one in a million guy that believed that in cosmic karma, fate & .Even though I was abit upset that

RECOMMENDATION:If ur searching for a classic vintage sort of movie with loads of hilarity and fun that would leave you smiling..This one's for you :)

;D WATCH IT !

I finished reading two works of intense beauty today, and their content couldn't be more different.

They left me sad, feeling those hollow places that are always inside me, wondering what could have been if I hadn't experienced an unrequited relationship like Tom Hansen's love for Summer, or if the abuse I'd suffered as a boy had been coupled with a mad mother who kept me always on the edge of chaos.

500 Days of Summer and The Lost Episodes of Beatie Scareli are different. They are. But so much of what they are and how they do it is related. The former is a screenplay with a marvelous screen manifestation; the latter is a novel written as a pseudo-screenplay. The former offers episodes from 500 days of a romantic relationship; the latter offers episodes from 4 years of a tortured, insane family. The former offers a meditation on loving and liking, where hope only occurs in life moving on; the latter offers a meditation on abuse, where hope only occurs in life moving on. And both of them are achingly beautiful in their immediacy (a natural result of their form) and their intimacy.

I know that much of what I am saying is about how they made me feel, but that's fitting because they are both deeply about feelings. The authors of 500 Days of Summer and The Lost Episodes of Beatie Scareli wanted us to feel above all. I am sure they also wanted us to love their works (or like them), but I think they would also be okay with us hating them, so long as we were feeling them. Well, as I said, I felt them, but I don't know that I can say more about how they made me feel. It seems a bit to personal for now.

But there is something specific, something beyond my personal landscape that they made me feel, something that I think needs to be said. I feel, very deeply, that those who love literature must spend some time reading screenplays. I admit straight up that I am a screenwriter, and I know many screenwriters, and I can say to you that every screenwriter, produced or not, has at least ten unpublished screenplays on their shelf. And those stories are good. Sometimes even great. And they will likely NEVER be made, which means they will likely never be shared. Those stories, unless we start reading them, unless we offer a market for them, will stay on their shelves and be forgotten.

Ginnetta Coreli may have one answer with The Lost Episodes of Beatie Scareli. Maybe if we adapt our screenplays into screen-novels. Drop the "technical" screenplay format but keep the screenplay presentation. Maybe then the readers of the world will be interested. Maybe then they will read our stories and welcome us into their hearts without our stories having to be on screen.

Of course, the other answer is to get lucky enough to sell your screenplay, see it produced, and have your screenplay, your actual words, then sell to the big choir of fellow screenwriters. I dunno.

But I do know that both of these works touched me more than anything I've read in many months. I wish them on everyone. Including my own worst enemies.

So this was how I came to find this book. Just yesterday I went to a book fair and it was there basking in the golden light of the side lamps. (500) Days of Summer: The Shooting Script stood there itching to be felt and inspected by me. It was a mighty task I tell you- scrambling to reach the shelf. I'm not tall.So this was like Mount Everest to me. When I finally grabbed the book (now all huffy, puffy and sweaty) I sighed annoyed because it was like a movie guide with the scenes and stuff. Yet I skimmed the book went home and after struggling to remember the name watched the movie.

500 Days cannot pass by without love, hatred, regret and pain

If you haven't watched the movie I have no idea what you're waiting for because it was fantastic, heart warming, frustrating and happy all at the same time. Tom was just tom. He was naive, young, full of life and gullible enough to fall for Summer the woman who loved him but not like that. She was volatile, different, lively yet managed to innocently crush him to prices. Shatter his life, break his bones, destroy his perspectives and future. She was powerful, flammable and absolutely a wrecking ball.

I hated her. I loved her. It was confusing especially seeing Tom grow indifferent, resigned and finished. When 500 days full of Summer- her thoughts, her laugh, her looks, her scent, the way she walked and talked. When all of this was extinguished, done with, tied and burnt. There was hope for a new beginning. Thus, the ending I loved. I adored. It surprised me but warmed my chilled, sad heart.

Sometimes you just get stabbed

This book was about a girl named Summer, and a boy named Tom. From the first time that Tom lays his eyes on Summer, he knows that he is in love. Throughout the book, Tom realizes that Summer isn't just some "ordinary girl." She's different. The problem that Tom has, is that, Summer doesn't want to be anyone's girlfriend, but from being with Tom, it's like she already is. The challenge that Summer is facing, is that she's not sure if Tom is right for her. During the movie/book, the good days and bad days with Summer go back and forth. Is it true love, or is it not?
I can make a text to text connection, with the book Flipped. Flipped is also about a girl and a boy who are trying to figure each other out. (500) Days of Summer, and Flipped are very similar, because in Flipped, Tom and Summer are 13 years old, and in (500) Days of Summer they are adults. Tom and Summer aren't really in the book Flipped, but in a way they almost are, because of how similar they each are.
I rated this script 5 stars. That is because it was a very charming story, very well written, and very funny.

Im so sorry i pqed...This movie is literally life. Everyone is in the wrong and just trying to get on with it. It shows the selfishness and biased things we all do. Both charachters change their version of things to make themselves the victim without knowing it. There's something amazing when the lead charachters highlight the flaws in eachother. Summer shows how tom is living in a fantasy and tom shows how summer doesn't trust others. There is so much frustration and miscommunication I held against both charachters. When then I really realised that we all do the things we are annoyed about them doing. We are all selfish sometimes and what this movie is about is even when we feel the biggest feelings we should still think about the other person.

I rated this script 5 stars because it was such a charming story . This dialogue struck me “it’s these cards and the movies and the pop songs they’re to blame for all the lies and the heartache everything “. I learned through this movie the power of expectations . Expectations are what could make us and destroy us , Don’t expect anything from anyone . Life doesn’t always go according to your plans and expectations no matter how painful it seems t you . And the ending , Ahhhh that was classic it leaves some kind of satisfication when tom hears the name “Autumn” he immediately gives a smile ! Autumn does come after summer 💘
Very well written !

The light script follows in on the tradition of RomCom movies, being light and all, BUT what's been different, and what made it a great movie, is that it didn't include the corny scenes and the repeated dialogue. It was original, and as the screen writer mentioned in a follow-up article, it was real, it happened to him. And a huge proof of its originality is that the real Summer didn't recognize that the Summer in the screenplay was actually her. I guess that's what made it a great, well-written, screenplay that was transformed into a great movie with the aid of great actors.

500 Days of Summer by Scott Neustadter http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/5...

10 out of 10

I have seen this for the second time the other day, and found the love story compelling, indeed, looking at the previous note, when seen six years ago, the movie was rated with only nine out of ten, but now it looks better.

Having said this, it has become a habit – getting worse with time apparently – to abandon the theme of the book or film and venture into what I thought about it, or not even that, just ideas that crossed my mind while reading the work, and therefore there must be a warning here to alert anybody interested that whatever I had to say about 500 Days of Summer is already placed above…a ‘pretty good show’

It made me think of the lines I have read, some of them learned – ‘my love is as a fever longing still for that which longer nursest the disease…past cure I am, now reason is past care, and frantic mad, with ever more unrest, my thoughts and my discourse as mad men are, at random from the truth vainly expressed’

That was supposed to be from a sonnet of Shakespeare, which seemed both amusing and excellent, at the time when interested in love and trying to get close to women, I have learned some love poems by heart, to try and show off, be mirthful -to say that ‘I am frantic mad’ seemed hilarious, as well as offering some sort of trailer, introduction in what there is to come, in case we decide to continue and maybe a show of honesty

Early on, there has been a revelation in reading Thomas Mann http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/06/l... who had a very clear, if somewhat gloomy description of love, in one of his short stories and in other of his masterpieces…

There is of course the love between Hans Castorp and the Russian woman - what a mistake, to choose someone from there…I am just playing games here http://realini.blogspot.com/2013/09/g... and the leys are in this fabulous classic of psychology, Games People Play by Eric Berne

Actually, Clavdia Chauchat -this is a magic moment here, for I have no idea how I came to get that outré name, from the memory that tends to mix all sorts of information and find I cannot remember the name of what, Brad Pitt, not yet, but it will happen soon – was not even Russian, she comes from that part of the world.

She could be Ukrainian – or maybe not, I am pushing it too far with the notion that I have now The Magic Mountain http://realini.blogspot.com/2021/09/t... all here, in front of my eyes, and the details, intrigue, geography, names and games are crystal clear…they are not

Clavdia Chauchat might well be placed by Thomas Mann very clearly, in a precise geographical area, but I just think I recall how Hans Castorp was mesmerized (and I felt about the same with him, holding the book in my hands) and he, or the author, speculated on the features of this exotic presence, a woman from the steppes, one that somehow I sort of prefer to associate with Ukraine and not Russia

Which is evidently silly, nay, even worse, because there is Gogol http://realini.blogspot.com/2017/07/d... Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Goncearov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev and the list is longer

They are Russian and their magnum opera is essential for humanity, we have so much to be grateful for, luminaries from that wonderful people – somehow, they have produced giants and angels, but then we also have Putin, such a monster, now I think about Richard III http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/07/r... and the myth we still have about him

Richard III was a good king, the real one, but the mythical, literary character was a monster and Putin is a copy of that ‘now is the winter of our discontent turned into glorious summer by this son of York and all the clouds that loured upon our house, in the deep bosom of the ocean buried’ a vile creature…

The Daughter of Time http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/10/t... by Josephine Fey was voted the best mystery novel by the Association of Mystery Writers in Britain, and among the best 100 (somewhere at twenty two, or thereabouts) by the American Association of Mystery Writers (there may be another name for the two outfits, but the major point is correct)

It looks at the murder of the two young boys, and finds that Richard III was not responsible, on the contrary, as stated before, the man was actually more than honorable and we have here one of those lies that have been perpetuated…another great read on myths is http://realini.blogspot.com/2015/02/t... Myths of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/u... – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/r...

The film about destiny and that everything is written and that is supposed to happen
That you meet someone you love
But it is not predestined for the relationship it lasts
In order to get the person deserves to be with you
This is what I learned from (500 days of summer )

The film unfurls solely from Tom's viewpoint, subtly echoing the idea of narrative bias. We are never privy to the inner workings of Summer's mind, a nuance that gently nudges the audience, reminding us that we are witnessing the narrative through a single lens. There might be a wealth of understanding to glean if we could only peek into the other side of the story.

Tom conjures up an idealized version of Summer, crafting an image that scarcely coincides with her authentic self. This is, perhaps, most poignantly depicted in the split-screen scene where Tom's expectations are laid bare next to reality. The scene serves as a potent reminder to perceive people as they genuinely are, not as the polished, flawless versions we fabricate in our minds. Consequently, Tom misreads Summer's warmth and closeness as indications of her matching his level of commitment to their relationship.

However, it's plausible to argue that Summer could have demonstrated more sensitivity towards how her actions might be interpreted, especially in light of Tom's palpably intense emotions for her. Even if she didn't perceive her actions as leading Tom on, it might have been prudent for her to reinforce her stance more firmly, thereby precluding any potential misinterpretations. Then again, she may well have done this, but Tom, in his stubborn hopefulness, chose to turn a blind eye, which would explain why such instances are absent from his narrative.

The film delves into how distinct individuals can harbor completely disparate perceptions and expectations of love and relationships. Tom, the starry-eyed romantic, is convinced of the existence of soulmates and the concept of "the one". In stark contrast, Summer is a grounded realist who initially seeks nothing more than a casual relationship. Their clashing perspectives serve as a heartfelt testament to the crucial importance of communication and mutual understanding in any relationship.

My Rating: 5 Stars.

(500) Days of Summer is one of those rare movies I will always come back to. It's right up there with Ratatouille, but does admittedly lack the lofty morale a talking rat has to offer.

The script, though not as extraordinary as its on-screen partner, was every bit as gripping as I'd hoped it to be. I did enjoy my internal comparisons from script to screen throughout my time in reading (it was thrilling to think, "that didn't happen in the movie!"), as well as the personality of the text that shone through the medium - something I strive to achieve in my own career.

That's not to say it didn't have it's duller parts, but I do chalk that up to me being used to books rather than scripts - even though I am a film student of four years. There's just more sentiment in longer passages for me, what can I say?

I love the non-chronological jumpiness of the narrative and the symbolism of Tom's obsession with playing light off of parking lots -- feels like a really subtle parallel to his desire to idealize his perceptions of people! A really interesting screenplay that describes the downfall of a relationship in which both parties are somewhat blinded to the other and screen their reality through the filter of expected romance.

Sometimes the movie is so good you read the script.

Excerpts:
“Holy shit. Tom was right.”
You were right about all of it.
(beat)
It just wasn’t me you were right
about."

Tom and Summer shopping at the fruit market. Unless we were
looking for trouble we wouldn’t see any. But since we are, we
might notice she lags behind him as they walk through the
aisles. His hands are in his pockets. He’s bored. She’s
distant. But only if we’re really looking.

It is a beautiful story about person' s growth which they learn from love or making mistakes ,or maybe taking risks . It tells that sometimes we couldn't see the other possibilities or on the brighter side and kept walking and choosing the path of fate until we finally completely breakdown and get over it with time by being you , following your goals and dreams.

The movie left me a bit confused
I was happy that Tom didn’t end up with Summer because who sleeps (sexually) with their friend
I loved how the sister told him that when you look back you only seeing the goo bits not the negative
I loved how he finally did something he was good at even though he was good at making cards
Absolutely loved the interaction between Tom and Autumn
