Super helpful advice for a first time half marathon runner! It checked off all the questions I have been looking up on google for months and is so nice to have the checklists written out in front of you for race planning. Would recommend for first time runners to help you establish everything you need to know pre-during-and post race!
Just ran my first half and with the help of this book, I easily crushed my goal time! For someone that basically went from couch to 13.1, I was ecstatic.
The fueling and prep and race day strategies were particularly helpful especially since I came down with bronchitis 14 days before the race—was only able to run again two days before the race. Plenty of time to read the book though and dial in all the pre-race stuff, so on race morning I felt at ease and ready to go, and I had fun!
Anyway, very much enjoyed the book, it was well written, insightful, trustworthy, and (most importantly to me) motivational.
A structured, easy and insightful read for first time runners or those who want to get back into it. The author provides relatable information and tips and takes you from nervous to excited to hit the ground running! A book that fulfills its objective, that I can see myself coming back to.
Nice balance between "easy to read"/entertaining and interesting facts / things to remember when you want to get back to running (my case) or want to start running. This book makes it easy to put your running shoes back on: the author herself went from being a "couch potato" to a strong and ambitous runner - a truly inspiring read! Recommended!
Hmmmm....I think I was expecting more - more training tips, training plans even, long distance first hand experiences, race day failures and examples of on the spot flexibility, perhaps some motivational snippets. However, it all just felt.... known, obvious, and some things even immaterial.
The "Book Description" on goodreads is almost comical to read now. It's as though it lists all of the things this book touched on, but didn't quite commit to.
I also abhor calorie counting and wish the nutritional chapters were less focused on measurements and instead provided more examples, recipes, and suggestions of what to actually consume before and after various run types, etc.
I would recommend this book only to someone who isn't a runner at all but wants to start.
Really good information if you are a novice runner and good reminder on information if you have run a few half marathons. If you have run 3 half successfully you can skip this book.
