Their icy rivalry heats up, but these enemies aren’t prepared for how far they’ll fall.
Harry
It’s my senior year. After this, it’s on to medical school, and the sport I love becomes just a memory. Hockey gave me a home when my parents kicked me out for being gay, and it paid my tuition too. I owe my life to my teammates, so there is no way I’m leaving them behind to be stepping stones for some brat like Grayson Novak.
He came up with money and history, getting everything. With that kind of training, he better skate circles around ninety percent of the team.
He can flirt. He can show off the guys he picks up and drops one by one. I don’t care what he does off the ice. If he wants to be a party boy, more power to him — but the second he brings the team down, he’s out. I don’t care who his daddy is.
Grayson
I grew up on the ice. I’m hockey royalty with a retired Olympian for a father and three younger brothers who form a legacy of domination on the ice.
College is a stepping stone. Before the season is out, I expect to be offered a professional position — if only Captain Hardass Harry would get out of my way.
He’s short but fast, so I can’t even complain that he’s just jealous. Rising out of nothing, he’s a phoenix, and I’ve never wanted anyone more.
He made himself the enemy, but I’m the kind of guy who knows how to kill with kindness. By the end, I’ll have my pro deal and Hardass Harry will wish he’d gotten with me when he had the chance.
Capturing the Captain is a steamy gay contemporary enemies-to-lovers sports romance featuring sunshine/grumpy opposites attracting, hurt/comfort, first times, and a guaranteed happy ending!
I don't really understand what was going on with this one!
It's pretty clear the editing was non existent, there were so many spelling mistakes and wrong words in general which is something I hate.
Also the pacing was off. Some parts dragged, then others went ridiculously fast or just completely skipped over events we were supposed to know about, but the author seemed to have forgotten we actually didn't.
It was also so unrealistic and overly dramatic I didn't really know what to make of it. The two MCs get together in the blink of an eye and they're super serious immediately; everyone was warning about Grayson yet there was zero evidence to back it up, it was just there to cause even more conflict and melodrama; the homophobic dad attempts murder but his other family think that's fine??; the whole way the try outs and offers worked just seemed really unrealistic; the 15 year old and the phone/email thing was insane... there was just so much going on and it was all so, so weird!!
I wouldn’t be surprised if the author is a die hard hockey fan because the first 35-40% of the book is everything hockey and almost nothing romance. I gave it the benefit of the doubt but as soon as Grayson and Harry got together in less than a page of conversation about feelings, I knew this book wasn’t going to end great. There was no real build up or tension. It all happened too quick and unrealistically. Harry didn’t even show any real interest in Grayson that way during his POV’s and then all of a sudden, after one dance and some alcohol, he’s dating Grayson? Umm..
There was little to no enemies-to-lovers and more “captain being mature and trying to guide immature, cocky teammate”
I gotta say, I thought I would enjoy this one. The premise seemed right up my alley and I normally really like sports romance books, but something about this didn't work for me. I thought the book started out pretty well and tried to give depth to the Harry and flesh out his character, but Grayson was pretty childish (which is fair given he's 18, but in this case, Harry's maturity and level-headedness just put Grayson's character in sharp, often unflattering contrast.) However, about 35-40% into the book, I really started losing interest and began skimming. The story and the writing just felt shallow and very contrived after that point, and so much was going on with various secondary characters that by the time the end rolled around, nothing got resolved in a satisfactory way. The rest of this review will be in spoilers just so I can mention a few specific things I noticed, but overall, it was an okay read that started out fine and just got convoluted and disappointing by the end.
I'm so glad no one had to give up their dreams in order for them to be together. I wish there was more of them getting to know each other instead of drama coming at them from every angle.
They were so good for each other though, Grayson matured a little throughout this so I'd guess you can call it a win.
Honestly didn't like that the meetings of each other family's was just them finding out that everyone around is actually crazy, besides Harry's roommates. It should've been more about them then about all these side people. Jackson and Thomas were fun to read about so at least Grayson has two good brothers!
Enjoyable read, a little angst thrown in, passionate and entertaining. I wish this was a series. There’s two side characters that I would love to see back together, make something of there relationship.
These two were great to read about, excellent chemistry and great love scenes.
„I don’t go around assaulting people“ is an actual quote from the book and the funny part? He does go around and assaults people at the beginning (like kissing one guy without his consent and then making fun of that guy after it). Do I want someone like that as my Mc? No thank you.
And he had that I’m-better-than-anyone-attitude. Again: no thank you.
This was also kind of a mess storywise like what was the reason for this weirdly amount of really awful people in this book and not solving any of the drama with them at the end?
Could not put this book down Harry is a senior in college he is an amazing hockey player. He has had offers from national teams already whilst at college but he wants to be a doctor and that is where his whole focus went 1st to be a doctor 2nd to play hockey on the ice. Harry had been thrown by his family when he was found to be kissing a boy. He always had a trust issue due to said boy making out that it was all Harrys fault. So he never really looked at dating. But now there was somebody on the team who was making his life uncomfortable. Grayson was in his first year at college and hoping to get in offer from the National teams for hockey before his first year ended. He was the son of a very famous hockey player who was an Olympian and had been national player so he had a lot to live up to. But he also wanted to do it on his terms. To say he made the worst impression on his captain before the hockey season even started was an understatement and now he had an uphill slog just to make him get back on a level field. The big problem Grayson had was that the captain Harry just made his body go haywire. So he was going to do everything to get his man. I honestly could not put this book down it’s now 4:30 in the morning I’ve had no sleep but I have been so lost in this story that I don’t even care. Harry and Grayson start was so complicated. Harry had seen the worst of Grayson and Grayson needed to grow up. But I will say that Grayson is one persistent man. Because he did get Harry and their relationship when they are left alone and other people are not getting involved it’s just pure bliss they just are so well matched. The chemistry is amazing the passion is off the charts but also these two can communicate, they can talk about anything together trust one another. It’s just such a shame when other people think that they need to interfere. An absolutely fantastic Read will not be disappointed in this book.

4 stars for being pretty cute and definitely hot--I especially enjoyed Grayson's character development--though the plot is a bit contrived and some characters seem to exist solely to be one dimensional assholes for minor conflict. That's not a crime, though, because this is ultimately a fun and not that deep college hockey romance. (I also appreciate it not being Obviously RPF like so much of hockey romance, as someone who finds most RPF extremely hard to get into, and as someone who's enough of a hockey nerd that I can almost always tell who it's about lmao)
One caveat that comes out of that hockey nerdery though--I almost DNF'd multiple times because there was so much talk about Grayson wanting to impress scouts and get an offer for a pro tryout in his freshman year and like...he's the son of a super famous NHL player and Olympian and we hear multiple times about his super successful pre-college career...I'm pretty sure he should have been drafted, and since he wasn't, I'd expect him to be driven by disappointment or get some comments from his family or teammates about not being as great as he thought he was, etc. The plot would have worked just as well if he was just adamant about getting his ELC asap and getting out of there. It definitely feels like the author has no knowledge at all of how junior hockey works hahaha.
BUT that little rant aside, I absolutely encourage people to give this book a try, it's very cute, and it's very hot, and what more can you really ask.
ETA: I should say that the first half is significantly stronger than the second half. The plot gets pretty contrived and overextends itself. The book works best as what it says on the tin--a rivals to lovers college romance. the other stuff i could do without. maybe more of a 3.5 rounded up
Harry Godwin, captain of the Michigan Wolverines ice hockey team, is a senior who has been accepted into med school. Grayson Novak is a freshman, the son of a retired Olympian dad, and typically arrogant, despite his skill on the ice. He and Harry immediately conflict, but their strong skills on the ice are noticed and respected by each other.
Harry was grateful for what hockey has done for him. It gave him a place to be after his parents kicked him out of the house. It provided his tuition, and the team became his true family. He cares about each one of them. That’s why Grayson had him worried with the entitled attitude he brought with him. If he can’t pull his weight on the team, Harry will make sure he is kicked off, no matter who his famous daddy is.
Grayson has his eye on getting an offer for a professional position. He sees Harry as an obstacle to that. But Harry is more than he seems. Will he change Grayson’s mind about him? Will the two of them be able to work together seamlessly for the good of the team? And could their mutual love of the game be what brings them together on another level entirely?
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, reading it in one sitting. The characters drew me in from the very start, whilst I like both Grayson and Harry I very much appreciated the character development. Grayson became so much more than he initially was, while keeping his sense of humour that hooked me to start. I did find myself shaking my head and face palming at a few of his decisions. Harry, well I think he’s one of my favourite characters. The author managed to capture his love for Ice Hockey and his desire to be a doctor, whilst not letting one diminish the other. This was a breath of fresh from other novels, when a character decides a sport they have loved means nothing. There is very little relationship angst, and their development together felt very normal, and real world. Which I LOVED. The author kept story moving at a good pace throughout, keeping me invested and wanting more. The only question left… Red Wings or Black Hawks?.

I really enjoyed reading Capturing the Captain. The main characters, Harry and Grayson, had a little bit of a rocky start. As hockey teammates, they are supposed to get along, and they do, somewhat. Grayson is young, his dad is a former hockey star, everything has gone his way and guys fall at his feet. Harry is a very talented hockey player, captain of the team, smart and driven to get into medical school instead of going pro. Grayson doesn't understand why someone so talented wouldn't go pro. He thought that was the only way to go. But Harry keeps on gaining Grayson's attention, both on and off the ice. Soon both give into the attraction that is pulling at them.
Grayson's dad is focused on being in control of his future pro career, but Grayson is his own man and loves Harry and wants to be with him. Harry wants what is best for Grayson too.
A sweet ending, interesting side characters who will hopefully make an appearance or have their own book in the future.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I thought I’d start a few chapters before bed and finish the rest later. Silly me! Next thing I knew, it was 3 am lol and I had devoured the book.
My favorite part of m/m books are the complexities that occur when the characters “come out” and when they are discovering and learning about their sexuality. It just deepens the plot and draws me in. There was a lot of this so I was hooked pretty early on. This wasn’t just another m/m sports romance. Their vulnerability added a depth to the story I wasn’t expecting. It was refreshing and appreciated. The spice level was nice. It was spread out and mixed in throughout to give it an even mixture of spice and plot. I really liked both mc. I enjoyed watching them grow as individuals and as partners.
Harry and Grayson are just the sweetest but also just college/ uni students in behaviour. After the initial anomosity when Grayson joins Harry at his college/ university hockey team. But when Grayson changes his thinking about his position in the team and as a hockey player, they find middle ground and understanding for eachother.
They become great friends and boyfriends who make eachother stronger. In the later part of the book we get one major upset, concerning Harry, and a second slightly smaller one due to a meddling little brother. Ofcourse Harry and Grayson find their hea with the full support of Grayson his family.
For me the book could have been a little bit shorter, but overall the author wrote a rounded story coming full circle for both mc's, they where likeable.

3.5/5 stars I will say there’s a lot of things that need work like the plot is messy, it’s chaotic etc but it kept me entertained and invested.
Harry I feel like is a bit of a “too nice” of guy sometimes but he’s still a good character.
Grayson I honestly didn’t like him in the first few chapters but Harry ig “fixed” him lmao
Their relationship just poof happened like gray asked once and Harry was like “sure” so there’s not a build up or anything. It’s fluffy but there is a bit of drama down the line.
Now for the life of me I need Jose & Dr James book. Where is it?!
Steam-3/5 it was definitely different like I’d never read a book that they wore condoms even to give blowjobs so it was a bit awkward but it was pretty good nonetheless.
Hockey is one of the most homophobic sports in a country that is the most homophobic of all English-speaking countries. But LGBT fiction totally rocks. It can present a world as it should be. A book that can show hope for people confused about and scared of their sexual orientation.
That said, this is NOT a book with a political agenda. It is a well-written story of young adults with hopes and dreams. It is a story of love and joy with a bit of bitterness and hate. There is some sexy time and at times a crazy amount of drama with some hold-your-breath eek! moments. All ending in lots of warm and fuzziness. In other words, a typical Brendol James book that is well worth a read.
The book was a rarity in that it didn't center on a lot of miscommunications between the main characters. So many lazy authors utilize that as a plot twist and it's BORING. At least here the two leads were man enough to discuss things as they occurred. I also appreciated that it was about 60% into the book before the guys hit the sex button. That's another rare event in men on men books. Its refreshing that they took some time to understand each other before jumping in the sack.
The book isn't exactly realistic about acceptance of openly gay athletes in Division 1 hocky and the NFL, but I guess it's nice to think that one day we could get there.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Harry is a good captain and a doctor to be. Grayson is a rookie and has a famous father but Harry doesn't let that sway him. Grayson eventually listen's to Harry's advice and his game improves. However he has to work to become Harry's boyfriend but does it. Things are going good for them until Harry's father tries to kill him and Grayson's younger brother tries to sabotage their relationship but they come out of it even stronger.
Harry is the captain of his college hockey team. He's going on the become a doctor and is grateful for hockey. His teammates gave him a family when his kicked him out. Grayson reminded me of a spoiled brat. His dad was an Olympian and all he wants is to be on a professional hockey team. I literally could not put this book down, sooo freakin good!!! The characters were well fleshed out with great development. Overall, a fantastic read! The story was really well written, the pacing was smooth, highly recommend.
2.5 stars. This was a bit of a toothless college-hockey romance about an arrogant rookie and the captain who humbles him. It's supposed to be enemies-to-lovers but that lasts all of a few chapters and generates very little tension. It was very average. Nothing really happens until like 80+% in and then a lot of things happen at once. It's one of my least favourite things in books - eleventh-hour drama. It was also poorly edited with many small text errors that were distracting for me. All-in-all a bit disappointing.
Ugh. This was so boring. Could have been so good, I'm all for enemies to lovers hockey romance but the writing was like - you know that when the person giving a lecture speaks in that boring monotone. This was the writing equivalent of that. Besides that every complication in the story was cut short, the drama wasn't dramatic, the sex wasn't hot, the chemistry wasn't sizzling. I liked Grayson but I didn't like Harry. He's like a droid, no real personality. Could have been my favourite if written by someone else with talent.
Am I getting "done" with my M/M romance novels bent (pun intended)? Getting bored of the gay hockey player trope? No, I'm not. This one was just uninteresting, un-swoon-worthy crap. And proof that even at bargain-basement pricing, Bookbub doesn't always provide good selections. Also proof of the undeniable value of good editing and proofreading - man, this was an annoying mess! Skip it. At any price.
There is a thin storyline based on college hockey with most of the focus on the sexual interactions between Harry and Grayson. Story also includes some rather crude actions which would be considered sexual assault or predatory behavior. Unfortunately these scenes are played without any moral balance or oversight. It’s an OK storyline, but the book is more erotica than story.
I enjoyed their first kiss and the games Grayson played.
But other than that I found this story to be somewhat juvenile. I think I actually would have just preferred a better cover and definitely a better developed characters and dialogue.
Or heck! I would have just preferred the Dr and Jose’s story instead.
The writing was alright, it’s the story Milne that was weak.
This book is what happens when your rival is that one person that bring brings out the best and worst in someone. To see how this unfolds is nice. You only meet the standards if you love hockey.... but do both guys meet that standard.? They are really tested to see what and what they are and want to be.

At like 40 percent I felt like I was reading a book about hockey without romance And the relationship between harry and grayson felt forced and thier was no real feelings displayed for the readers to connect with the characters. Realistically if not for the sake of plot armor grayson and harry would not end up together
