They call me a soldier of fortune, a hired gun, a man with no morals only looking to get paid—a mercenary. That’s true… mostly. From where I stand, I don’t see it as a bad thing. Getting paid to do the dirty work, to take the jobs saner people refuse is my bread and butter. I love the danger, the thrill, the warmth that attempts to spark something in my cold, black heart. Why shouldn’t I get paid for that? Does it really matter if I’m indifferent about who I step on to succeed? The job always gets done, and I never look back. The same went for Lauren Vos, an undercover FBI agent working in some of the most dangerous trafficking circles known to man. Our paths crossed on a job years ago, and somehow fate has thrown us together once again. Only this time around she isn’t interested in letting me forget. The problem for her is that I’m not the same man she thought she left for dead.
Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
If you look forward to read a book cute and flowers, this isn’t the story. Here the male character is the bad man but has a heart and the female character is badass!!!! Something stayed unexplained but ok! It’s worth the reading.
I have read previous books by Marie James and really enjoyed them especially the BLACKBRIDGE SECURITY SERIES which recently ended so when I saw she was starting a new series I was totally there for it. I didn't know that Lauren and Angel had shown up in one of her previous books, THUMPER (Cerberus MC Book 17), which I hadn't read and while it may have shed some more background on them it isn't necessary to read before this book so if you haven't read that book either it's okay you can definitely read this one independently.
Lauren "Lola" Vos is an FBI agent with a disturbing past, a past that makes her put herself in harms way. Some may say this isn't healthy but this is the way Lauren deals with things, and gets things done.
Benito "Angel" Corea is a mercenary for hire, his specialty is finding women that have been sex trafficked. Which is how he and Lauren have met, and it's also the reason he hates her so much.
I will admit that this story was much darker then I was prepared for, there weren't any trigger warnings so coming off of Blackbridge Security and only reading one book in the Cerberus MC Series I wasn't expecting the darkness and I honestly wasn't in the best head space for it either, so it took me much longer then it normally would have to finish this book. That doesn't mean it wasn't a good read because it was. I really did enjoy it, I just had to put it down and step away for a while more than I normally would have.
I enjoyed the story line and thought the chemistry between Lauren and Angel was good. I will definitely have to do a reread when I am ready for all of the degradation and angry sex.
If you enjoy STEAMY Dark Romances, Enemies to Lovers Romances, Forced Proximity Romances, or Romantic Suspense Reads I would recommend this book to you.
I reached the end of this book and still don’t know what to think. I didn’t like the characters, and yet, they had me hooked! I couldn’t look away from the hot mess they were or the catastrophe they had created out of their lives.
Angel was a mercenary. Once he was full of heart, but being left for dead changed things. It made him harder, colder, less caring. So why did Lauren affect him so much?
Lauren was an FBI agent who was willing to put herself at the heart of true danger to save lives. Little did anyone know… she was desperate to feel used, abused and humiliated. She lived to be trampled on and assaulted. They fed her in ways they would disgust most people. Why did Angel give her everything she could ever need?
If the FBI hires agents like Lauren, I feel sorry for the federal justice system in America. She was all kinds of messed up. She wasn’t stupid, she had resources, but she did nothing to help herself. She made excuses and she frustrated me. And Angel… dude had so much to offer and I often found myself wishing he wouldn’t offer them to Lauren.
Yeah, it’s all messed up. And yet… I’m probably going to read the next book in the series. Go figure :)
Lessons Learned is my first introduction to author Marie James and what an introduction it is.
As this is a powerful, bold, and heavy read. That's not for the faint-hearted. But it's also addictive, engaging and extremely well-written.
As the two lead characters Lauren and Angel have lived through hell and suffered traumas you couldn't ever imagine.
Which leads them to crave substantial danger and do things 99.99% of people wouldn't and that flows into their sex lives.
Which is explosive, and at times frightening. The detail is that vivid. But it's always consensual and it may have had me wincing at times, but when you understand what these two have been through it does make sense.
And whilst I didn't necessarily enjoy some of those parts, I did enjoy the rest of the story. And I can't deny this author knows how to write romance. Which is completely dark, twisted and utterly captivating and I'd definitely recommend it to others.
But be warned there are some triggers.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC by Wildfire Marketing Solutions in exchange for an honest review**
WOWSA! I was not expecting Lessons Learned to be so dark, so understand that there are triggers in the pages so proceed with caution. Angel is a damaged & tortured soul from his hellish upbringing, and these days, he just takes jobs as a mercenarie that no one else in their right mind would want. Lauren is another tortured soul making her every bit as dark as Angel, except she's an FBI agent who takes the jobs no one else wants. The sparks fly when these two come together, but Angel believes he despises her, and she's not about to let him get the jump on her despite her wanting him. As they end up traveling together, maybe just maybe they'll be just what the doctor ordered for each other but it's a toss up since they may kill each other first LOL! This story is all things dark with a ton of heat despite taking me out of my comfort zone, twists coming in hot with the new levels of suspense, and a delightful reunion with Cerberus MC! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
We have to say that we are still reeling from this story days later. I have read a lot of books that are dark but, this story is seriously dark and for those it may trigger some. This story was a heart-wrenching, tear your heart out kind of read, and it made me uncomfortable and kept me on edge the entire story.
The characters were awesome, both characters Lauren and Angel are deeply trouble and very damaged, their childhoods broke both of them. This story was very moving and very emotional, both for the reader and the character. These characters have a love/hate/enemies kind of relationship but, along the way, this couple grew to care about one another even trust one another on some small level, especially for Lauren where sex was concerned anyway between her and Angel.
As the story progresses, things start to make sense when this couple starts talking about their pasts but, for Angel, he seems to be more in tune with what Lauren needs and when she needs it. This couple is drawn to each other and the darkness they possess and crazy as it sounds, Angel is just what Lauren needs.
Overall, this story was a page turner for me. The story had a ton of suspense, bdsm kink that is dark and painful and to some disturbing but, it feeds the needs of these characters. The ending was a surprise that we really enjoyed and hoping that this couple finds some peace along the way and maybe heal in some small ways, and we are hoping that the blessings they have been given will bring the light into their dark hearts once again.
This was my first time reading anything by Marie James and I went in blind so I could keep an open mind.
Boy this was not what I expected. This is a dark, dirty, sick and twisted romance. This book is not going to be for everyone. Read the trigger warnings and take them seriously because this one is not exaggerating the triggers!
Angel and Lauren’s story was hard to read at times. Their past defined them as the people they are today, a bit f’ed up and made you understand why they were into what they were.
Lauren was an FBI agent with the perfect sordid desires that the bureau needed to get the job done. Tough but self destructive, Lauren drowns her demons with the job, getting off on the abuse and pain she thinks she deserves.
Angel is a mercenary when he comes across Lauren the first time. She left him for dead after being shot twice. Years later they meet again and start this dark dangerous game of chess. Angel wants to break her for walking away while he lay there bleeding out. Lauren wants the punishment he’s going to deliver but won’t make it easy for him. In this game of chess the queen wants to kill the king but the king wants to keep her all to himself. What a way to start off a new series! It’s going to be interesting to see what the author will bring next in Liam’s story.
I love this authors books. She always delivers on action, suspense, romance, romance with some kink... Mission Mercenaries starts off with familiar faces from my favorite motorcycle club, but takes a hard turn into some very dark territory.
This book is not about a walk in the park on a beautiful spring day. It's a fight for life down a steep rocky slope, littered with death, violence and malevolent ghosts from the past.
Lauren and Angel are two people chased by their demons. They are toxic and poison to each other. But each time they come together, their poison wraps it's sticky web around them tighter and tighter.
Their travels through the dark are truly horrific. I honestly couldn't put this book down. I had to keep reading to see if there was even a spark of light that could reach these two tortured people.
I can't wait for the next book in this new series. I better stock up on my sleep. If the next is like this one it's going to be a long dark night.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wowee! That was pretty heavy going!! I knew from the blurb that this book would test the limits and I have to say it certainly did!
Lauren Vos is a hardened, undercover FBI agent. She goes deeper and darker than anyone could imagine. Her determination to save victims is deep seated in her makeup. What we thought we knew of her from the Cerberus was nothing compared to what we learn in this dark romance. She has a darkness inside her, one that needs to be fed inorder for her to feel. Wracked with guilt and self loathing …the real catalyst for her erratic, harming behaviour. Angel has seen despair and depravity, he’s lived it. The chance for revenge against Lauren, after she left him for dead is an opportunity he can’t miss.
What starts as a game of cat and mouse between this pair very quickly becomes something so much more, darker, deeper and more desperate as an inexplainable need turns to a dependency on a different level.
This is quite the ride…..I’m not sure I would say I really ‘like’ the characters in the true sense but I certainly felt everything they went through and admired the life they found together. What I especially appreciated from this author was the reverse trauma, something we rarely get in dark romance. I also totally felt everything and loved the slow release of information, Ms James does a fantastic job of drip feeding the reader the facts and history of this pair and it made the story even richer and more heartbreaking the further we got in with the characters. Trust and respect doesn’t come easy for Angel and Lauren and lessons have to be learned.. I loved the lighter touch and small flashes of humour in the final chapter…I can’t wait to get more glimpses of these two as we start this exciting new series….
Wow!!! Hang on to your hat and get ready for a very dark, tortured souls, enemies to lovers, romantic suspense novel that is and addictive page turner. Sparks of chemistry sizzle right off the pages. Ms. James gives us the start of a whole new world with a side glimpse of her Cerberus MC.
Lauren and Angel have both survived things that no child should ever have to. Thus forming them into the hardened individuals that they are. He works as a mercenary, she is an FBI agent and both take on the jobs nobody wants. Putting themselves in the lines of danger at every turn.
They have a history and it isn't a pleasant one by any means. When the cross paths this time, it's hard to tell which one of them might survive the explosion. The more time they spend together you can see behind the volitility that it's possible there might be more deep down.
Will these two kill each other or will two broken souls find a way of healing each other with an understanding deeper than any therapy session.
Not a book for the faint at heart. It is a well written novel with dark content that will have many triggers for some, almost like a train wreck you can't stop watching happen. I look forward to what is next in the series.
*** Advanced copy provided in exchange for an honest review. ***
Angel has endured a childhood that no one should have to which has led to his career as a mercenary and shaped him into the man he has became. His only focus is completing his assignments and has no regard for who might get caught in the crossfire and that includes Lauren.
Lauren’s determined to ease the guilt she feels about the past has her working as an FBI agent as she immerses herself in a life surrounded by evil men who treat women as commodities. She and Angel have a past but rather that running the other way when it comes to this dark and dangerous man she is drawn to him and escape is the furthest thing on her mind.
Both Angel and Lauren are damaged by what they experienced but that is also what makes them the perfect match as they find a sense of peace in each other that has been missing their entire life.
Before even having cracked the metaphorical spine I'm frightened! This is not my usual trope of choice but the author most certainly is.
Angel and Lauren have a checkered past but when they meet again after years of separation, they are irrevocably drawn together.
There are elements of their story which can be best described as dark but essentially, in the telling and reading of their story, you can sense they are meant to be together and can almost feel their bond.
My trust in Marie James was certainly not misplaced. Even with some trepidation, I felt safe in the hands of this author and although the trope was outwith my normal comfort zone, I enjoyed this side trip and will continue to read this new series by an author whose work I hold in great regard.
This was such an enthralling read! Darker than expected but brilliant. Angel and Lauren were complicated, had history and nearly melted my kindle! This book had plenty of steam and suspense and certainly kept my interest. This is the first book in a new series and has left me intrigued for more books in this series. It was good to revisit Cerberus MC here as well. Overall an excellent read which I would recommend.
Lessons Learned was an epic start to this new series. Angel and Lauren’s story was DARK and all kinds of twisted. So not for the faint hearted.
These two characters love to hate each other, but are so explosive together. Is it possible for them to find HEA or will they kill each other in the process?
I loved every minute of this story. I’m excited for what’s next in this series.
Getting a chance to be one of the first people to devour the latest release from one of my favorite authors is a wonderful thing. What's not super is the lack of reviews, preparing me for what lies between these pages!
Because what this book contains is a super dark, mind-twisting, tragic, heart breaking tale of two people who have lived through more trauma than anyone should. Seriously dark and twisted.
Required reading prior to this book should be a couple in the Cerberus MC series (Thumper and Spade), but honestly - understanding that entire MC club is in your best interest. Not a have to, but a should.
The physical and psychological damage done to these two early on, by the people who should have protected them is just one aspect of the depravity in this story. Lauren's need for physical danger is vividly detailed and cringe-worthy. Angel isn't much better, and his lack of morality is chilling. Their steamy scenes are over-the-top explosive and abusive. Completely consensual, but physically detrimental to both of them. How these two characters live is so far from my (and most people's) reality, that I needed to break from the story a few times, to remind myself of that.
(I told you - it's really dark - take the warnings to heart. This is not for everyone. It's tough, gritty, and hard.)
That warning given, my fingers couldn't flip the pages fast enough. While it's a tough read for several reasons, it's also well written, engaging and addictive. There are a few parts I really didn't enjoy, but that could be said for many books I've finished. It is easy to connect with these two, and that's okay and not okay. It's a complete mind f*ck. It pulled several emotions from me throughout the read (good and bad), and is not a read I will soon forget.
I was not entirely surprised at the "Happy Ever After", as I was hoping these two would find a way to be together for the long term, and this author delivered a perfect one for them. How they got there is a testament to the creativity and skill of this author. Her ability to drag me through the Hell of these character's lives, and deliver me out the other side completely satisfied with the read (and my residual feelings about it) is one of the reasons I recommend this author's works. I cannot even imagine what the next story in this series will be, but if it is even half of what this one is, I will be thrilled to read it. Whew! Keep 'em coming Marie James! I'm here for it! :)
I was fortunate to receive my free ARC from Booksprout, and I voluntarily leave my review.
I’ll be honest. I have very mixed feelings about Lessons Learned, the first book in Marie James’ new Mission Mercenaries series. Angel and Lauren are unlike any characters I’ve ever read before.
Let me start by saying it is extremely well written. These characters have extraordinary depth and baggage you can’t even begin to understand. They are both so broken they can never have what most would consider to be a normal, healthy relationship. Angel and Lauren’s journey is as emotional as it is raw and brutal.
And, that is where my mixed feelings come in. Lessons Learned is extremely raw and brutal. There is no sweetness in either character. Their relationship is consensual, but emotionally and physically abusive to a degree that made me feel uncomfortable at times.
I don’t want to dissuade anyone from reading . . .because it is a satisfying and well written book. but, you need to be aware it is emotionally heavy and gritty. If you are looking for rainbows and sunshine in a romance, this book is not for you. But, if you love reading dark, I encourage you to dive in. 4 stars.
WoW - What an epic start to this brand new series from Marie James.
Lessons Learned shows this authors writing style in a completely different light, the book is raw, dark, twisted and emotional in parts, that said Marie James still manages to deliver lots of laughs, hot kinky sex and bring two broken and dark souls together.
A real page turner that will feed your black twisted hearts perfectly, I cannot wait for the next book in this series - each one is a standalone but filters and hints at the next story to follow.
I had a hard time reading this book. I enjoy most of Marie James books, but this one was hard to read. I was hoping to like Angel, but Lauren wasn't my favorite in other books and I was hoping this would make me a fan of her, but it didn't. This normally wouldn't be my normal reads and really if it wasn't a Marie James (or another author that I enjoy) book, I would have put it down before I finished it. It does get better, but not one of my favorites.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow. Definitely not my usual read. This stuff is so not my jam. But it's so freaking well written I was on the edge of my seat. I think it's highly unlikely Lauren would have ever passed the psychological exam to get into the FBI but she was such a complex and complicated person I couldn't help but cheer her on. And I am still wondering how Angel was ever able to be any semblance of normal. I have been sucked into my first truly dark series. I can't wait for Liam!!!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
To say I’m a fan of Marie James would be an understatement and let me tell you she NEVER disappoints and this book is no different. I do feel that my review should come with a little bit of a warning only because this story is intense and could be too much for some people. It does have some strong intense sexual scenes that could trigger some people. Such things as extremely rough sex, degradation, consensual non consent.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way holy crap was this story and insanely wild ride that I’ve been waiting for. If you’ve read any or all of the Cerberus MC books you will recognize both Lauren and Angel especially from Thumpers book. These two are like two grenades with their pins halfway pulled and you’re just waiting to see which one explodes first. Angel and Lauren were both born into pain and while Lauren seemed to thrive in it Angel tried to help where he could. That is until El Salvador and Lauren, Angel and Thumper were all changed by the events. By a random sick twist of fate Angel is brought back to the Cerberus Compound where Lauren happens to be taking a break. But she refuses to let him leave without her. Angel can’t believe he’s seeing Lauren after all this time and has been plotting revenge, but what he wishes isn’t far off from the things Lauren believes she deserves. Lauren believes she deserves to suffer for her childhood as redemption and in feeling that way she sparks a part of Angel he thought was long since gone. Angel knows trusting Lauren is a risk to himself but he’s a risk taker. The real risk is seeing if she can ever fully trust him. Will both be able to reconcile their pasts and forge ahead. This story is also the true beginning of Mission Mercenaries and I absolutely LOVE that we get to see it’s inception. When the Cerberus series begins the MC is already established. I was actually wondering if this was a group of men already and we had only seen Angel or if we were going to witness their beginning. I could go on and on but I don’t want to give more away with my review but I’m more than excited to see where this goes and becomes a part of the intwined Marie James Universe!!
Having read all of Marie's Blackbridge Security series and loved it, I thought I knew what I was in for with Lessons Learned - boy was I wrong! Holy Hell!!! It was a bit of a shock..... I love dark and twisted reads, but this is gritty and raw, it really pings on your nerves and was powerful enough to have me wincing at times. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic read when you get into it and understand the background of the characters to see why they act the way they do, but it's not one to go into without due warning, it's not for the faint hearted, it has lots of triggers.
Angel is a mercenary, getting paid to do the jobs not many would take, the danger and violence are a thrill to him, he has no morals, emotions mean nothing to him, a stone cold killer, if he is to rescue a woman then that women gets rescued, he doesn't care who he stands on to achieve his goal - he also won't rescue anyone else apart from the person he is being paid for, so the rest of the women and children would remain behind, without even an after thought!
Lauren is an undercover FBI agent, working in the worst and most dangerous trafficking areas known, what she has gone through and endured to free some of the women does not bare thinking about. Lauren and Angel have crossed paths previously working in a cartel. Lauren is used to using her womanly charms to get what she wants, playing the victim, taking the abuse. She has played with Angel before, when he was more alive, when their paths cross this time she finds he is not the same man, he has no life within him anymore, and death awaits in his stare.
Both of these main characters have grown up in abusive situations. Angel was taken in hand with his Grandfather, who stepped up to educate him about women and how worthless they are, and has been doctrined into that belief. Lauren had an elder sister who doted on her father, yet Lauren could never do anything right in his eyes, he only had eyes for he sister. It turns out her elder sister was trying to keep Lauren safe from her father's abuse and taking it all onto herself. Lauren blames herself for her sister's death and does not believe she deserves anything good in her life, and so turns to pain and torture as her way of feeling good instead.
The story is utterly captivating even whilst you're reading it and thinking you should not be enjoying this type of depravity, you cannot put it down. As the story progresses and you come to understand the mentality behind the characters and their actions you can understand why they act the way they do. There are some definite cringe worthy moments, these two people enjoying what would horrify most sane people. Expect to be pushed outside of what you are normally comfortable with. A very good read for me - this is a spin off series from Marie's Cerebus MC series, which I have not yet read, some of the characters from there cross over into here, a series I will be adding to my TBR list after this.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
They call me a soldier of fortune, a hired gun, a man with no morals only looking to get paid-a mercenary. That's true....mostly. From where I stand, I don't see it as a bad thing. This book is a dark romance. You will want to heed the warnings in the beginning of the book. There might be some things in this book that will be triggering for some readers. This is the story of Lauren and Angel. She is a undercover FBI agent and that job takes her deeper into very seedy worlds and it affects her more than anyone could ever imagine. She is more than determined to save victims and that determination is rooted deep down inside her. You will be learning a lot about her in this book and I don't know that even I was well prepared for what is learned. She has this darkness deep inside of her that needs to be fed before she can really feel anything other than the darkness. Her behavior is alarming to say the least at times and it is because of all the guilt and self loathing she feels more often than not. I am going to be honest right here and say that she freaked me out sometimes.. I'd have to take a break from her, calm myself down and go back into the book again. Angel is a man that you would hire when you needed something done that now one else would ever do. He hardly ever turns a job down and loves what he does. He gets a thrill out of it and really it is the only things that gives him any satisfaction at all and is about the only time he feels really. He is also no stranger to Lauren Vos as they met years ago on a job and she basically left him for dead. However if she thinks she is dealing with the same man she was all those years ago she is going to be sadly mistake. These two enter into a dark games of cat and mouse. What they don't expect is how they are starting to really depend on each other in the darkness that is their world. I don't know if I can say much more about his story and not give something away. If you love dark twisted stories then you are going to love reading this one for sure.
Tropes: dark romance between a mercenary and FBI agent, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, romantic suspense
Benito "Angel" Corea is a soldier of fortune. If the money's right, he was for hire. Most of the jobs he took were to find missing women who had been trafficked. This introduced him to Lauren "Lola" Vos. She was an FBI agent that took some of the darkest and most dangerous jobs. Both do what they do because trauma was once a reality in their younger years. For Angel, the darker the job the better. Lauren seemed made for him as she called to the darkness within him. They were a match made in hell right up until she walked over his body, not realizing he wasn't dead. Their first encounter further broke something fundamental in him. He was changed. When their paths cross again, all he wants is revenge. The problem? She loves the way he treats her. The darker, the better. When her need for degradation becomes impossible to ignore, will they be able to reconcile or will they permanently pay for being seriously messed up?
This book surprised me mostly because anything I've read by this author wasn't this dark. But since I easily revele in pitch black darkness, I was very pleasantly surprised. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat with the twist and turns. The twisted chemistry between them was right up my alley. It couldn’t have been better. I highly recommend this read to all readers of dark romance. I can't wait for the rest of the series. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
This book has all the feels and emotions. It’s hot, steamy, dark, tragic, and haunting, but it’s a great read.
Angel returns from the dead, or some thought anyways. He’s a mercenary and he is not ashamed of his job or his position. He wasn’t always bad, but when he was stepped over and left for dead by the one person he stood in front of to protect and then was taken into the hands of the enemy and tortured, he became a deadly Angel. He was already a broken man from his childhood, but this was beyond what his mind could accept.
Lauren lives for danger, action and dark situations. Her childhood showed her that life is not bright and sunny. When she lost the one person that protected her, it made her a woman living on the edge. As an FBI agent, she could find that edge by helping those that were taken and sold in the sex trafficking business. However, when things start to come back on her missions and cause her trouble with her job she has nowhere to go, so she turns to the one man that she couldn’t seem to forget.
Angel and Lauren are steamy, dark, and so right for each other. This story had me crying, cringing, and holding my breath at times, but it also was a very hard to put down read. I loved all of it. Its action packed and the characters are wonderful, as is always the case with Marie James’ stories. I can’t wait for the next book in this spin off series from the Cerberus MC. Liam’s story looks to be just as steamy and action packed as Lessons Learned was. I give this book a 5-star review.
I just finished Lessons Learned, by one of my go-to favorite authors Marie James, and I am speechless. Having read just about everything this woman has written, I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started this book, the first installment of a new series called Mission Mercenaries…I was wrong. Lessons Learned explores the darker side of victim rescue, with a brutally broken mercenary that plays the hero only when the money is good, and the shattered woman with a black heart and a proclivity for pain.
When we met Angel Guerra in Thumper (Cerberus MC #17), he was more hero than villain as he put himself in mortal danger to protect undercover agent Lauren Vos. Too bad her duty to protect didn’t include him when she stepped over his bleeding body as she made her escape. Their next encounter would prove to be much less merciful than before, with both of them determined to destroy the other. Their pasts made them who they are today, one seeking out danger and brutality for cash and an outlet for his rage, while the other seeks retribution and pain as her penance for atrocities not her own. Together they are hellfire and brimstone.
This was unlike anything I have read from Marie James before. The utter torment these two went through, and continued to put each other through, was nearly too much to bear. The darkness was tangible, like it was my own and not that of the characters I was reading about. It was hard to reconcile the untenable thoughts and actions of these two broken souls, with the unrelenting kindness, strength, and integrity we see with the men and women of the Cerberus MC. That being said, this was an incredible read that will stay with me for a while. There is beauty in darkness, and love doesn’t just flourish in the light. Nothing is truer than that in this book.
Mission Mercenaries is an exciting new series that links the Cerberus MC and its well-known members from past books. Wow! What an amazing ride this story is, talk about raw, gritty and twisted, and tragic. Danger sits on every corner of this story and you can’t predict what’s going to happen next!
Lauren Vos is a federal agent who thrives on going undercover in the deepest and darkest of situations, some call her departed because of her personal needs—they could be right! Angel describes himself as having a cold, black heart but being a Mercenary, he fills the job description perfectly. He’s learned his lessons well. Both have suffered growing up and their demons reign supreme. In reality, they’re both just trying to survive and are haunted by their past. Together they have unusual needs they both meet, and their chemistry is off the charts.
This might be raw and gritty but there are so many scenes that scream ‘real’, and that’s what makes it a bit scary but also makes this story a cut above others. To be reading a fictional story but feel like much if it’s a true story is remarkable. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Marie James has such a unique talent of giving us characters that we aren’t sure we should love, but find ourselves cheering for in the end. I want to say while I REALLY REALLY liked this book A LOT, I know that it won’t be for everyone. PLEASE check your trigger warnings before going in. Angel and Lauren have a history, and so many conflicting emotions. Angel and Lauren have worked adjacent to each other as they work to save women kidnapped or sold into trafficking situations. Angel likes to think that he isn’t a good guy, and maybe he isn’t all good but there is a lot more good in him than he likes to let on. He is such a damaged hero and his past plays a huge role in his life. He doesn’t trust people, because they really haven’t given him a reason to. Lauren is an FBI agent that often goes undercover, and has had a traumatic background. She is between jobs with the FBI when Angel stumbles upon her on a job of his own. These two take us on an epic journey filled with some serious angst, sexual tension, and healing. These two have such a deep understanding of each other and in ways that other people wouldn't even understand. While they think that they can’t stand each other but at the same time crave each other. I really loved how two people that others may have thought didn’t have it in them to love or be loved found each other. This was an intense ride that Marie James took readers on and I am here for it. I would definitely say this is a dark romance, and not at all a slow burn! I am so looking forward to this series of books, and I really enjoyed how this crew of people came together so organically. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next book in this series, and I can’t wait to see Angel in a different role moving forward! If you are into MC series, darker plots, and anti hero’s stealing your heart than this series should be a must read for you!
Lessons Learned is the first book in a new series by Marie James, told in dual POV. This book is twisted and delicious and exactly how I like my darker reads.
This series is going to be dark, more edgy and different and just as great at Ms. James’ Cerberus MC series. Mission Mercenaries is a spin off of Cerberus so some of the members are mentioned in this book and hopefully will show up from time to time throughout the series.
I was completely engrossed from the first page! Angel and Lauren have lived thru awful childhood traumas. While they both feed into the darkness that clings to their very soul, they have gone about it in different ways.
Lauren works for the FBI, we first me her and Angel in Thumper’s book-Cerberus MC, as an undercover agent going into the worst of the worst trafficking rings. She not only thrives off the thrill of putting the bad guys away and saving the victims but the darkness in her craves the depravity that comes with the assignments.
Angel is a mercenary who works for himself. He’s not out for the glory or even the thrill of catching the bad guys, he’s in it only for the biggest pay out. When he first meets Lauren, while on assignment, his moral compass was slightly intact but after her betrayal, that compass broke into a million pieces.
Several years later when they cross paths again they both see an opportunity, he wants to make her pay and she needs to feed her darkness. As they both feed into their darkness, they find their demons enjoy playing together, they fight against it, but in the end their demons will have their way.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series! Thank you Ms. James for another amazing read!.
Mission Mercenaries is an exciting new series that links the Cerberus MC and its well-known members from past books. Wow! What an amazing ride this story is, talk about raw, gritty and twisted and tragic.
He’s learnt his lessons well. Both have suffered growing up and their demons reign supreme. In reality, they’re both just trying to survive and are haunted by their past. Together they have unusual needs they both meet, their chemistry is off the charts.
This might be raw and gritty but there are so many scenes that scream ‘real’, and that’s what makes it a bit scary but also makes this story a cut above others. To be reading a fictional story but feel like much if it’s a true story is remarkable. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
