Twelve-year-old JAKE NELSON and his mom, a former Disney Princess, have recently moved from Orlando, Florida, to his grandfather’s home in Washington State. Shorter than the average sixth grader, Jake finds it difficult to fit in at his new school, Hawthorne Elementary, especially after making an enemy of one of the most popular boys on the very first day. Not to mention, Jake’s hobby is a little He’s a Sasquatch hunter.
When Kate B Jackson (K.B. Jackson) isn't writing about Sasquatch, secrets, and murder, she enjoys unearthing family scandals under the guise of ancestry research. A 2-time Agatha Award winner, 3-time Anthony Award finalist, and 2-time Silver Falchion Award nominated author of mysteries for kids and grownups, she lives in the Pacific Northwest with her trophy husband and enjoys traveling with their four grown children. She writes the Sasquatch Hunters Middle Grade series, the Chattertowne Secrets mysteries, and the Cruising Sisters mysteries.
At first glimpse, this appears to be an intriguing mystery about discovering Bigfoot, and all that that entails for budding young detectives. The story, as a whole, however, encompasses so much more. There are coming of age struggles, along with social dilemmas and family drama, that culminate into quite an interesting read. The dynamic characters, surprising plot twist, and abundance of action kept me turning the pages. I plan to purchase a paperback copy for my son for Christmas and think it will be enjoyed by middle schoolers all over.
I loved this book, and it had me invested in the mystery from the first chapter. I loved Jasmine, Jake and Lanny’s friendship and the dynamic of the S.H.O.W throughout the book! It was interesting to see a popular girl from school talk to and eventually become friends with the new kid in town. It was also cool to see how Jake takes his grandfather’s interest in Bigfoot to the next level. My favorite part was the ending, but I won’t give away anything. I can’t wait for more!
The Sasquatch of Hawthorne Elementary is a story of blossoming friendship, messy family, and forgiveness all wrapped around a mythical creature and a rousing adventure in the Pacific Northwest woods. With well-rounded characters and a great story line, Sasquatch will be that book the kids read under the covers with a flashlight.
This was such a fun read! It had all the elements I love: good characters, good setting, mystery, a little suspense. And Bigfoot! Who doesn't love a bigfoot book. I also love that the family lives with grandpa. As a kid who grew up with grandparents, it's important to see that families are all the different, but all the same. It's who you love.
I know it's YA, but I've got a thing for big, hairy guys. After meeting K.B. at Malice Domestic, I had to read the book, and I loved it! I've got three small boys moved in up the road and I've been reading them a few pages every day after school. We're having a great time. Thank you, K.B.
I picked up this book (and the sequel which I’ve also read) after briefly meeting the author at a pop up event! She is absolutely lovely and warned me that this book is aimed for younger children (which I am not). With that in mind, I didn’t love the book because it was clear I’m not the target audience. While I don’t think I’d read it again, I can’t wait for my niece to get a little bigger as this will be the perfect book for her!!
