Nan Lyons (Who's Killing the Great Chefs?) looks at history's lavish feasts, richest (and oddest) dishes, great chefs and prize eaters, with recipes and color paintings.
This is a silly book by the co-author of "Someone is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe" (1976) and "Someone is Killing the Great Chefs of America" (1993). The illustrations and quotations are amusing; there are several recipes worth noting, e.g. Auguste Escoffier's own recipe for Lobster Newburg (which can, frankly, be improved upon). Her treatment of the subject of gluttony is superficial, light, and humourous. A more serious treatment is available in Francine Prose, Gluttony, New York: Oxford University Press, 2003.
