Allred takes us on a beautiful journey in this poetry chapbook, full of poignant and ever-so-raw emotionally charged poetry that leaves her readers breathless as always. Growing Pains is an enchanting and eloquent reminder to us that life's trials are the mental and emotional equivalent to growing pains, harrowing and impossible as they may seem, they are catalysts for growth and testaments to the glorious process of refining a human.
J. Bell Price is a scientist by day and a poet, novelist, and artist by night. She is an advocate for mental health and loves math, reading, writing, and of course, poetry of all kinds.
She has been writing since she was five years old and published her first book of poetry at seventeen entitled Scars Vol I. Since then many more have come including Growing Pains, Wild Hearts, The Force Between Stars, and many more are constantly in the works as she balances life as a student, writer, wife, friend, and more.
Bell enjoys traveling with her husband, hiking, drinking diet coke and reading science fiction and fantasy. Bell is a passionate fighter for her ideals and morals, sometimes to the chagrin of her loved ones, but her joy comes in equal measure.
Growing Pains by @marieallred_ was a beautiful read. The book is printed in a glossy print and throughout the entire book are incredible images that really make it flow together nicely. When I first started reading I really LOVED the “preface” which is also the first poem. She speaks to her mother, who seems to be neglectful of the pain she has caused in her daughters life. I always feel close to home when I read about familial relationships because mine were not that great. The book does not go in any particular order it seems, but each page weaves a story in your mind that will stay with you far after you are done reading. I believe this book is something everyone can find a piece that hits them in the gut, for me - it was the poems about self-harm as that was something I struggled with when I was younger and the poems about feeling alone. The author candidly shares her journey of mental health and healing and it’s definitely a must read for people of all ages! I found myself “dog-earring” many pages.
