CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

This is the volume where we all went WTF! It is so confusing, so unbelievable, so amazing. You may read the story again and again and again and yet you will always have questions.

I really liked this, and there is less and less confusion in each volume. Yuko is great, I'm really looking forward to XXX Holic, after I finish this and World Chronicle!

"the dream remains a dream . . . "

as always, I have no idea how CLAMP managed the most complicated crossover ever. probably cried the most in this volume - and have no idea how I'm going to make it through the last one.

(2019 reread) as I was reading, I kept thinking about that one line - and big surprise, it's the same one I quoted my first time around.

Review for complete series

Tsubasa is in a way a love letter to all of CLAMP's other works. I went into this having read almost all - definitely all relevant - series by CLAMP, so I can't say for sure, but I think this series is only half as fun if you haven't read the other works (preferably all). If you enjoy Easter Eggs and cameos, Tsubasa is an absolute treat.

For the longest time, Tsubasa was the longest manga series I owned; anything beyond 10 volumes makes me think twice as I find that most lengthy series just drag unnecessarily. However, it was impossible for me to say no to Tsubasa, Sakura and Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura have been long-time favourite manga characters of mine, not to mention that I am generally very fond of CLAMP and all their big and small crossovers. Reading a story that combines almost their entire bibliography and with Sakura and Syaoran as the main characters was too good to say no to. It should also be mentioned that this series is heavily interwoven with xxxHolic's plot and should best be read alongside each other.

This Syaoran and Sakura are not the same from Cardcaptor Sakura (although the original Sakura makes a cameo). In essence, this is a story about travelling between dimensions - the same person can exist in different versions of themselves in different universes. Sakura and Syaoran travel between the different worlds - all very different - and meet characters and elements from all across CLAMP's other works. In fact, some characters appear more than once to highlight how the same being can exist and lead a different life in different worlds. It's really fun to see the characters from other stories living different lives, some are funny and some are bittersweet. CLAMP has killed off a fair amount of its characters in other works so it's nice to see some of them leading happier and peaceful lives.

In addition to meeting a whole lot of known characters, there are also a couple of Tsubasa original characters such as Fay and Kurogane who accompany Sakura and Syaoran on their travels. I've grown to love Fay and Kurogane almost as much as I love the other two - so while Tsubasa is very much a homage to other CLAMP works, it's also a very character-driven story with both Fay and Kurogane having intricate and deep personalities. I also have to express my apologies to Kurogane - I always expected not to like him because I'm not very fond of brawns-over-brains type of characters, but I was very wrong about him; great character, smart as well a strong and just a really great guy.

Being a work of CLAMP, it's almost needless to say that the art is beautiful. That being said, this is more of a shounen-esque series which also shows in the art with the somewhat oddly length limbs and a greater focus on action, weapons and muscles. I prefer shoujo art, but the facial art is much the same as other CLAMP works so I can absolutely live with that.

A downside of Tsubasa is plain and simple that it gets confusing. There are time skips, world switching, doubles across different series (xxxHolic) and rather vague motivations from the villain's side. At some point, I just decided to go with the flow rather than trying to make sense of every detail. There's a bit of a loose end, though I wouldn't exactly call it a band ending either. Now that they are working on a sequel, it'll be interesting to see where things will lead to next.

Either way, an absolute gem if you like CLAMP and crossovers, and Sakura, Syaoran, Fay and Kurogane are just a great team of characters - to be fair, Mokona is as much part of the team and deserves a mention too. Finally, I just love these characters.

Sorry, but I don't understand a thing from this volume! So confusing, so carelessly twisted. .. Does Clamp understands her own story?
And the action scenes are not well-drawn.. I can't understand the fight scenes.
I will finish to see what is the point of the whole story but it is not becoming my favorite manga. No way!

Great volume! The action is at the highest it has ever been, which may or may not be a good thing. In terms of plot, the amount of action is perfect, it's what readers have been waiting for. In terms of artwork, I'm sorry, but action panels have never been very clear in this series. Luckily, the fallouts were always clear, so it didn't really matter.
I think we're getting to the more mind-effing part of the series. So Sakura and Syaoran... are Syaoran's parents?! What?! Hopefully this base will be extensively covered in the next volume.
Also: well-played, Fei-Wang, using the body double? Didn't do you much good in the long run, now did it, though? xD heehheheheh...
On to the LAST VOLUME!! WAAAAH I'M GONNA CRY!
Oh! Speaking of crying, I've never seen Mokona so emotional before! My heart pinched when I saw his/her/its tears :(

I really need to start reviewing these comics immediately after I finish reading them, because by the time I get it around to reviewing them these days I’ve forgotten the entire plot. Though I guess that speaks to my waning interest in the increasingly complicated story and the haphazard way that the narrative has devolved throughout the series. The group led by Syaoran has crossed dimensions to take the fight to Fei Wang Reed (who still seems to hold Sakura captive), but the battle is far more complicated than they realized it would be - Yuko has been keeping secrets and Syaoran and Sakura have infinitely more power over the universe then they ever expected. Unfortunately Clamp’s storytelling has gotten extremely devolved, and I kind of can’t wait to read the final compilation and get the story over with. Hopefully they’ll draw it neatly together in an interesting manner, but I’m not holding my breath.

This volume felt like time was in slow motion, yet so much was happening all at once. It was crazy, intense and overwhelming! I can't breathe or relax! I need to know! So many questions, so to be explained.

Tokyo is the Kingdom of Clow, just eons in the past. Sakura's feather that she place in the water in Tokyo has waited there building in power, now returned to her and giving Fei Wang the power to destroy the connection between dimensions, so he could break the rule of death being irreversible. Now Syaoran and Sakura, Syaoran parents are free and using their immense power to put it all back together. Crazy stuff!

Bruised but unbroken, Syaoran and his friends have finally reached Fei-Wong, who is about to use Sakura and her magic to break the laws of reality - but when Yuuko reveals the purpose of a strangely familiar artifact from her shop, all chaos will finally break loose! CLAMP delivers a shocking, tense, and fascinating penultimate entry that will keep fans tumbling through its quick action and twists til the last page. With reality crumbling around them, the truths of their fates will leave out heroes on the edge of everything...

Mindblowing, sumpah.

Arrrgghhhhhh!

I think we cross over into Sci-Fi territory with all the talk of time travel and magic. Again, seeing the full involvement of Yuko on the path of the Tsubasa gang is freaking good. The action scenes were done really well too. I never felt lost in what was going on in the fight against Fei-Wang. There is so much dumping of motives in these lasts few volumes.

Decisiones, sacrificios, elecciones…

This is where everything starts to get confusing for me...because paradoxes, dimensional rifts, time travel, AND reincarnations combined have a knack for being confusing. I got really excited for Cardcaptor!Sakura and Syaoran, though.

Let me explain the three stars. We are at just one volume from the end of the series. It's impossible that things are getting more complicated than getting clearer at this point. There are too many Sakuras and too many Syaorans and I don't know who's who anymore.

//////////////

Y me latió.

I could not even make myself open this volume. I barely made it through volumes 22-26 without wanting to pull my hair out. Finally I just decided that I don't care how the story ends, so I will not be finishing the series. It just got to be so convoluted and confusing. I didn't really care about the characters or their relationships as much as I wanted to. Sad; I really wanted to love this series.

Another manga series building towards a conclusion. While I enjoy seeing how CLAMP is tying up the ends between all of the characters they have introduced (maybe not entirely convincing but still..) This is not a friendly entry point for a new reader to the series. Better to start at the beginning.
