Once more, our reluctant hero Ricky Bradshaw faces a life-threatening event. His mom is sick. Like, really sick. Desperate to try anything to get a miracle, and having watch the movie Jesus Revolution with his Mom, Ricky agrees to be baptized in a creek by the Pirate Preacher. But things go from bad to worse to apocalyptic when Ricky doesn't come up for air. In the next moment, he's on a ship with Jonah the prophet, in the middle of a raging storm.

Sensing that the gods want someone to be sacrificed, the crew of barbaric men ― none of whom are fond of bathing ―casts lots to see who's gonna be the unlucky chump that goes into the sea. Ricky's all like, "Don't pick me, don't pick me!" but before he can show his stick, Jonah steps up like the whale of a guy that he is.

Except, surprise surprise, fate has other plans. Because out of nowhere, this giant octopus grabs Ricky and drags him down, down, down into the abyss. For a few harrowing moments Ricky and Jonah share a really tiny space in the gut of the Kraken. Then the Kraken gets sick of Ricky and ...

When Ricky finally washes ashore, he realizes he's in the underworld, where the crew of the Flying Dutchman sails around collecting souls of the dead. And wouldn't you know it, they want Ricky's soul most of all. Talk about a bad day. But even a bad day in the underworld can be a fun, adventurous sail, when there's love and sacrifice, demon-pirates and scores to settle, hope for a miracle and the chance to meet the one who made the wind and sea.

Ricky Bradshaw is a high school sophomore whose mother has lung cancer. But Ricky is no ordinary high school boy. He has a condition, called “absence seizures” that are triggered by being immersed in water. So when he and his mother agree to be baptized by a preacher dressed as a pirate in an attempt to help heal her cancer, the minute Ricky goes under, his adventures begin.
Suddenly Ricky is pulled from his current life—and his mother, whom he worships—and finds himself aboard the hold of a pirate ship, rowing for all he’s worth beside many others, all of whom are trying to keep the doomed ship afloat in the midst of stormy seas. And it only gets worse from there.
Non-stop perils hurl themselves in Ricky’s path and he must wrestle himself free from the gut of the dreaded Kraken only to float in scalding water alongside the skeleton of Thomas Tew, the former purser of the pirate Blackbeard. Ricky and Tew scarcely have time to breathe as one threat after another, in the form of rats, crabs, wolf spiders, and bats attempt to tear Ricky’s flesh from his body.
But when he finds his high school crush, Becky Nance, on the ship he boards to save himself, the two of them and Ricky’s friend Tew, come face to face with making life and death decisions, the consequences of which Ricky doesn’t fully understand until his absence seizure leaves him.
This book is a great story of every kind of pirate adventure one can imagine and ends in a very satisfying way. The storytelling is top-notch, fast-paced and very funny. I highly recommend this book for all those who love a good pirate story.
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a review but am very happy to do so. The opinion expressed is my own.

What a great story for a middle grade reader. It covers a tough topic, but unfortunately a topic way too prevalent in junior high and senior high students. The story was written in a fictional way, but it definitely will make a young reader think hard about it. And the descriptions and story world were exciting and suspenseful.

Would be a great book to read at the same time as your reader and discuss the book in a conversational type dialogue.

While I haven't read the previous books in this series, I enjoyed this one! I like how Ricky is transported back to the past and meets up with Jonah, going along with him on his adventures. I would have liked more to the story, but it was enjoyable as it was! Perfect for my 10 year old as well! I enjoyed the blend of fiction and the Biblical story of Jonah. This is a great book to read aloud with your kids or have them enjoy on their own. I appreciated the elements of faith. I look forward to going back and reading the other books in the series!
I received this book from the author. This is my honest review.

This is a cute and short read for kids. While classified as a young adult book, I would say my 14 and 12 year old sons would not be interested. My 8 year old would be more likely to read it. I personally thought the reference to Jonah (from the Bible) as a character should have been fleshed out a little more to fit in the story. It was a bit awkward and didn't seem to fit with where the rest of the story went. I suggest let your younger children read this book before they are too old to enjoy it.

In his latest work of fiction, Down to Davy Jones, the fifth book in the Caribbean Chronicles series, pirates, good and bad, abound. There is even a touch of romance. What a voyage through a hellish nightmare. Sea monsters, demons, skeletons, mermaids, even a peek into Hell, with the author’s sense of humor and a Bible story thrown in to lighten the dark, this book is sure to please the pirate in any of us. Highly recommended.

In full disclosure, I was given an advance copy of this book with no expectations. The opinions here are my own.

Arrrgh! Eddie Jones can pull in readers, old and young alike. I had to love: "Spokes, spooks. You say banana, I say Havana." Really made me giggle. And one of the comments near the ending...There are treasures out there we can’t even imagine, and I plan on finding them.”Isn't that so true. We all have dreams and treasures to find and through this series Caribbean Chronicles, readers will find them.

Down to Davy Jones is such a fun Middle Grade Read! Action and Adventure are at every turn. I love how Jones incorporates Old Testament stories and from there writes a true pirate adventure. I also enjoyed the relationships between the characters in the book! A great read for all and now that I read it, I will absolutely be reading it again aloud to the kiddos! I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to leave a review. All opinions are my own.

What an intriguing and fascinating story. Mr. Jones created a main character relatable and lovable. I have grandchildren who experience absence episodes. This story removes stigmas that are sometimes cast on these children. How refreshing to see Davy, a child, portrayed as a hero. Definitely cannot wait for book six in this series.

“Down to Davy Jones Locker,” the fifth installment in the Caribbean Chronicles series by Eddie Jones, takes readers on an exhilarating journey with Ricky Bradshaw, a pirate-loving teen who also grapples with absence seizures. This unique blend of historical adventure and contemporary struggles forms the backdrop of a compelling story.

Ricky’s world is turned upside down when his mother falls ill, prompting him to make a daring decision. He agrees to a baptism from a pirate preacher, only to find himself transported back in time onto a chaotic pirate ship during a raging storm. From there, the tale unfolds with supernatural twists.

As Ricky and a stowaway, Jonah, find themselves in the belly of a kraken, the narrative takes a surreal turn. Encounters with mythical creatures provide gripping challenges, including deviled crabs, man-eating birds, and wolf spiders. But the true heart of the story lies in Ricky’s journey through the Great Abyss, guided by the enigmatic Thomas Tew, or “Tew Few.”

What sets this book apart is its ability to cater to a wide audience. Younger readers will revel in the thrilling pirate adventures and underworld escapades, while older readers and adults will appreciate the witty banter and satirical humor that address deeper themes and social commentary with a deft touch.

Amidst the battles with half-dead pirates and malevolent demons, the characters’ struggles with faith and Christianity are seamlessly woven into the narrative, enhancing the story’s depth without overwhelming it. This subtle approach makes “Down to Davy Jones Locker” an accessible and engaging read for reluctant readers, both boys and girls, as well as pirate enthusiasts of all ages.

Ultimately, the novel’s central message revolves around resilience and the belief that even in the darkest of times, the light of hope can guide one back from the depths of despair. Eddie Jones has crafted a captivating tale that combines elements of history, fantasy, and spirituality into a thrilling adventure that can be read on its own, but will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Caribbean Chronicles series—or wanting to go back and read them all.

I really like these books. I mean I want to read more. The ending was kind of sudden but had a clear message to me at least. I hope he writes more of these. I'd love to read more about Ricky & Becky.
