[ MP3 CD Format ] Defending an accused rapist, a high-powered lawyer learns firsthand the terrible truth about her client . . . a discovery that propels her on a quest for justice and revenge in this addictively readable thriller from the author of The Cage. Kelly McCann is a fighter. She's fought to build a successful legal career, fought for the special needs of her family, and tirelessly fought for her clients. Her specialty is defending men accused of sex crimes -- falsely accused, she always maintains. Her detractors call her a traitor to her gender, but she doesn't care. Badass and brilliant, Kelly simply loves to win, and as the story opens, she's done it again, securing an acquittal for a renowned scientist accused of sexually assaulting his female employees. But the thrill of her victory is short-lived. That very night she, too, falls victim of a brutal sexual assault. And almost as horrific as the attack is the fact that she can't tell anyone it happened -- not without destroying her career in the process. Kelly has never backed down from a fight and she's not about to start pulling her punches now. Joining forces with her rapist's other victims, the shrewd lawyer plans to turn the tables on him. It's not only about justice -- these wronged women are out for revenge. But someone, it seems, is out for them, and one by one, they find themselves facing even greater danger.
Bonnie Kistler is the author of SHELL GAMES (on sale November 19, 2024); HER, TOO; THE CAGE; and HOUSE ON FIRE.
A former trial lawyer, she was born in suburban Philadelphia and educated at Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
After law school, she decided to seek adventure in Alaska––or at least as much adventure as she could manage while toiling away as a junior lawyer in a law firm. Perhaps her greatest adventure there was meeting her husband, coincidentally also a Philadelphian. She soon moved with him to Arkansas, and a few years later, full-circle back to Philadelphia. Having endured three different states' bar exams in four years (!), she decided to stay put.
Bonnie spent the remainder of her law career in private practice with major Philadelphia firms. She specialized in corporate litigation and successfully tried cases across the country.
But her love of writing eclipsed all else, and ultimately she left the law behind to become a full-time author.
She and her husband now live in Southwest Florida and the mountains of western North Carolina.
Kelly McCann is a defense attorney at the top of her game. Her clients are all accused of sexual assault, misconduct, or rape and she has never lost a case. Her latest client, a brilliant scientist, is on the cusp of creating a vaccine for Alzheimer's. His ex-colleague has accused him of raping her. Kelly knows he's guilty, as well as guilty of other rapes too, but her need for victory, to win is much stronger than her morality.
That is until it's...her, too.
Kelly realizes she can never say anything. She can never report it. It would tarnish not only her career but her reputation as well. Yet, the anger and rage is consuming her. She will get her justice one way or another.
What a blood boiling book this is. I will never understand why anyone would want to defend a rapist much less when your a woman so it took me some time to warm to Kelly. She may be ferocious in the courtroom but when you see her with her family you realize there is indeed another side to her. A caring and loving side. The juxtaposition between the two made for some compelling reading. This book would be a perfect selection for a book club because there is so much to be analyzed and discussed. Especially the relationship between Kelly and her teenage son. I can't delve into those details because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone else but I thought it was a smart play by Kistler and it gives the reader so much more to think and ponder over. The end game was a total surprise. I never expected a twist in this, I just wanted to see this vile jerk get his comeuppance, but Kistler pulled the rug out from beneath my feet and I can honestly say I didn't see THAT coming. Whoa. 4 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bedford Square Publishers for my complimentary copy.
I do not know that this book is intended to be as scary as it actually is, but to me, this is borderline horror (well maybe not quite). Dealing with hardcore issues such as serial sexual assault and how the justice system has historically handled rape cases, this book explores what happens when a hot-shot attorney defending an accused rapist realizes firsthand that her client is a monster.
𝑯𝒆𝒓, 𝑻𝒐𝒐 is intense, raw, heartbreaking and powerful - and a book you won’t soon forget. I highly recommend the audiobook narrated by Susan Dalian and Elisabeth Rodgers.
Thank you Harper Perennial and Harper Audio for the gifted copies.
I loved The Cage, so I knew I had to read this book as well. It follows Kelly, who is a lawyer for an ubergenius, rich scientist often accused of sexual assault. So far, she has got him off of 4 different cases (3 of them involving an NDA and a pay off.) It’s not until the last case that she wins, at this scientist’s (George) house, that she realizes she made a huge mistake helping him. Soon, 3 of the 4 girls Kelly had sign NDA’s are dead. Who is doing the killings? Why? They signed NDA’s…..🤷🏼♀️
This was a great story! It was divided into 4 main “chunks” titled by each of the women involved’s names. I loved the twist at the end, I honestly didn’t see it coming. I also was happy with the “happily-ish” ending for Kelly. I enjoyed the minor twists in the story as well. This story was well-written and has the reader turning pages due to all of the action and murders taking place. I am unsure how to categorize this novel….is it a legal thriller or a mystery/whodunnit? Kistler does a great job tackling a tough subject matter with sensitivity. There are trigger warnings, so be sure to check those out before reading.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication date: July 4, 2023
Kelly McCann is obsessed with winning, which is what makes her so good at her job as a defense lawyer. When she’s called to represent George Benedict, a scientific researcher on the cusp of finding a vaccine for Alzheimer’s, in a sexual assault case, she pulls out all the stops and emerges victorious- and George gets off scot-free. But Kelly soon learns firsthand that the man she represented is most definitely guilty, and has been taking advantage of women for years. Now, intent on revenge, Kelly must reach out to his former victims in order to lay a scheme that will destroy Benedict, but first she must earn the trust of the women she chose not to believe.
Bonnie Kistler’s third novel, “Her Too”, is a powerful and emotionally charged revenge novel that takes the #metoo movement to a whole new level. What happens when women aren’t believed and are betrayed by one of their own? How can they seek revenge on a powerful man who has been labeled a “hero” by modern day society? Kelly learns the hard way that the only way to get justice is through truth, and by rallying behind the very women she betrayed.
“Her, too” is narrated almost exclusively by Kelly, although there are a few sections where we hear from “the other women”, as they retell their traumatically painful experiences. Kelly was initially an unlikable character (after all, who likes a defense attorney?) although she eventually grew on me, but the other women were a different story. I immediately felt for them, developing a quick rapport that allowed me to root for them as the story went on. They all come from various walks of life and have faced their own judgments, and the fact that not all of them meet a happy ending adds an element of realism (albeit bittersweet) to the plot.
This is not an easy read, obviously, as the subject matter is intense and very personal. However, “Her, too” is also one of those reads that will stick with you. The ending was deliciously satisfying, and even had a little twist thrown in for good measure, although it is difficult to feel completely satiated after reading a novel this emotional and relevant. Trigger warnings abound, but Kistler has created a stirring storyline with relatable and genuinely human characters. I haven’t yet read Kistler’s other two novels, but considering the mark this one left on me, I’ll be next in line to read them, and any other story Kistler creates going forward.
This book started off sloooow! If you like slow burns, this is definitely your book. The first half of it took me a couple days, because I had a hard time getting gripped by it. Thankfully, the second half sped up and I finished it in a couple hours.
Kelly is our protagonist. She’s a go-getter, a lawyer with a perfect win record, and a great family. Her husband (for no reason that was extremely relevant to the book) is in a coma, and when she isn’t working, she’s at home taking care of him.
Her work leads us to meet Dr. George Benedict: a potential Nobel Prize candidate and the man who discovered that Alzheimer’s Disease was caused by a virus. He is poised to release a vaccine for the cruel disease, and rid the world of it. His work in the field makes him very well-respected, but he’s a sexual predator.
Kelly knows this, but also doesn’t want to lose her status as the lawyer who doesn’t lose, so she defends men like this. She justifies it by giving the women relatively meager settlements, and by the fact that she’s taking care of her family with the money she makes. Even when Kelly herself is raped by Dr. Benedict, she immediately washes away the evidence and continues forward with helping men during the “Me, Too” movement. If the world found out, she’d be seen for the hypocritical and insensitive woman that she is (did I mention she’s a rather unlikeable character?).
In what can only be described as a harebrained scheme, she eventually gets together with three of the women she screwed over with settlements and NDAs, and they all set out for revenge. Problem is, Kelly is a slightly unreliable character who doesn’t always think things through, so we will just say… things go awry.
The initial slowness of this book and how much I disliked the main character definitely affect my rating on this one. The writing was good, the ending was clever, but nothing ever made my jaw drop. I really struggled on the rating for this, but I’m going with 3.5, rounded down because I think it was a good book, but I don’t think I’d read it again.
(Thank you to Harper Perennial & Paperbacks, Bonnie Kistler, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on July 4, 2023.)
This was a powerful read in many ways and I can definitely see where the author was going but in the end I wanted more. It’s a pretty slow burn and given that it took a long time to get to the point it ended up being pretty predictable for me. Since it deals with sexual assault victims it’s very heavy and I think a faster pace may have helped more for me because since it was on the slower side it felt like I was living in a dark place alongside the characters almost too long. I had similar feelings with the authors last book so maybe it’s just that her style doesn’t quite work for me as well as I hope it will. Overall not a bad read though, very important and interesting topics covered just needed some more action. Definitely more of a lower suspense feel than a true mystery or thriller for me.
New from the brilliant legal mind behind THE CAGE, Bonnie Kistler kicks off 4th of July with a true bang this year when “HER, TOO” releases…‼️
Wow….what a doozy of a book. Powerful, propulsive, kind of sickeningly twisted, and downright brutal; Kistler gives us a tough as nails female main character in Kelly McCann, a prosecutor who makes her living and provides for her family by defending a lot of men who are accused of sexual assaults and other reprehensible acts…until one night, she becomes the victim herself to a very brutal rape. And what transpires is one hell of a revenge book…
The novel begins with a slow burn vibe and then it really starts to turn up the tempo about 25-30% of the way through, and then I literally could not tear myself away from the pages.
I struggled to know whether I was supposed to like Kelly McCann or root for her, because after all, until she became a victim herself she was an enabler, but in a subplot, Kistler does an incredible job of humanizing the character and really giving a tough crime book an emotional story to follow as well.
This book is raw, it will be challenging for some people to read {trigger warnings are obvious}; but I can promise you that it is damn well written, and the epitome of a page turner.
My heart is still pounding from finishing this book! It was a page turner right from the beginning but it put me on such an emotional roller coaster - I had to take serveral breaks from it. I finished the last half of it today in just a few hours!
High powered lawyer Kelly McCann makes a living defending this accused rapist genius doctor - then she finds out first hand the truth. To protect her professional reputation she destroys all the evidence and keeps her horrific secret to herself. She decides revenge is how she’s going to destroy him. She recruits some of his other victims to help with her plan but never reveals she’s a victim herself. The rest is full of twists you’ll never see coming!
I feel like this could have easily been a novella. It felt all over the place. The ending felt rushed. Just left me, meh. The last 40 pages... I read maybe half. Skipped so many paragraphs. Glad to be done with it and on to my current read!
This book started off with a horrific incident and from there on I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Set on a quest for revenge much like woman who were silenced in this book, I was very eager to see justice served alone myself as a reader.
When first reading the title it never occurred to me that it would symbolize the #metoo movement (I always go into books blind). I think the author did a fantastic job with her writing on such very hard to talk about topics (there were so many I will include them below as trigger warnings). Her writing truly made this book easy to read despite how hard some scenarios were to read and get through.
I especially loved the development she put into each character and their backgrounds. As the story went on, you got a real grasp for who they were as people and not just as victims and I think that’s a REALLY important factor when it comes to talking about tough subjects - such as rape.
This is definitely one of the books that had me in my feels this year. Overall, I’m glad I read it when I did and am also glad for the fact that I always go into every book I read blind by it’s synopsis because otherwise I don’t know if I would have simply put it off until I was in the mood to read what it pertained to.
As promised above the following triggers I’d be aware of before starting this book are: •Rape •Drugged •Sexual Assault •Sexual Exploitation •Child Birth Trauma •Hospice Care •#MeToo Victim
If you decide to check this one out, be on the look out for it’s release this July!
Kelly has always been a can do person. She has a successful legal career and has worked tirelessly for her family and clients. Her specialty though is not something she’s proud of, she defends men accused of sex crimes – though she maintains they are falsely accused. Until one day, she learns the hard way that not everyone she defends is innocent by falling victim herself. She joins forces with the other women who accused her client, and together they vow to bring him down. Kelly pulls out all the stops, but will he destroy her before she destroys him?
I loved this book! It was just what I needed after a bunch of romance books. I really enjoyed how sexual assault was shown in this book. I didn’t want to like Kelly because of her job, but when I learned why she was doing it – everything made sense, and I related to her. Kelly is such a strong female lead and shows the sacrifices women make every day to take care of their family. The writing on this one was phenomenal and highly entertaining.
Even though this book was a heavy read, and one that hit way too close to home, I really enjoyed it. I hope you’ll check it out July 4th.
Thank you to the publisher Harper Perennial and Paperbacks, Harper Paperbacks, @harperperennial, and Netgalley @netgalley for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Her, Too was the perfect combination of legal/medical thriller + family drama + feminist justice novel + moral/philosophical ponderance and I loved every single minute of this wild ride, although there were some really heavy parts and the ending got me hard in the feels.
What would you do if you knew that the man who held the key to ending Alzheimer was a pure monster who brutalized women to feel powerful? Would the multitude of future lives saved by an Alzheimers vaccine be worth more than the handful of women whose lives were ruined by the world-renowned genius doctor?
Kelly McCann doesn't even worry about the moral and ethical debate when she agrees to defend Dr. Benedict against the female scientist accusing him of rape. She is simply in it to do the job and win the case, in spite of being called a traitor to her gender ... until she survives her own brutal attack at thr hands of the same monster.
If she exposes what Dr. Benedict did to her, her credibility and career would be destroyed and she has too many people depending on her, employees, her children and her husband Adam, living in a vegetative state following a horrible stroke.
Kelly decides to band together with a few of Benedict's other survivors to destroy him ... until the women begin to die one by one...
This book has several storylines happening at once, but it is not too much to follow and everything comes together brilliantly in the end. The main female characters were super relateable and believable, even Kelly, although I had my doubts at first. I loved this book so much!!!!
Thank you to Harper for sending me an advance copy of this book!!
I have to say, I really did not like this book at all up until chapter 24 (there's only 38 in the book) and even then I was pretty "meh" about it, I just needed to finish the story.
I like the word choice of the author, but putting this story together did not showcase any of her strong suites.
This book follows a lawyer who defends men accused of sex crimes until she falls victim herself, as you can assume from the title. The book is very heavy in the way that it deals with this important topic but overall, I found the storyline boring, unrealistic, and predictable. I saw the ending coming from a mile away (so in chapter 24 when the story finally picked up). The storyline was one of those "well what else can go wrong?" types. And finally, I get the "motive" for her pursuing this career path but it left me feeling disdain for the main character and I found it difficult to feel compassion for any of her choices.
HER, TOO is part legal thriller, psychological suspense, and revenge story in one. The subject matter of this book is very difficult, but I'd highly recommend it.
A lawyer who defends accused rapists becomes a victim of her latest client and seeks revenge. This is an interesting story with a lot of emotion and a quest for justice. There is a nice twist and a satisfying ending.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Edelweiss, Harper and Bonnie Kistler for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
But, guess what? I can’t keep a secret so I’m about to tell you.
Her, Too, is destined to be a best seller and you do not want to miss it!
Bonnie Kistler, shines within the pages of this emotionally traumatizing novel and although the content can destroy your soul, I’m telling you, this is a must read. Kistler has a writing style all her own that will pull you in early on and never let you go.
It can happen to anyone…
This phrase is about to haunt you as much as this book will.
Fun facts about Bonnie Kistler, she is the author of The Cage and House on Fire, as well as penning other psychological thrillers as Bonnie MacDougal but this rockstar is also an attorney!

* Thank you HarperCollins, Bonnie Kistler, and Netgalley for my eARC for an honest review. Publication date 7/4/23*
Defence Lawyer Kelly McCann has not lost a trial yet. Her latest client famous Dr. George Benedict, who is the first person about to cure alzheimers, was on trial for rape and was found not guilty. Although Dr. Benedict is found not guilty he really is guilty of committing multiple rapes .Kelly has a hard decision to make, to save millions of people from getting the horrible disease or for finally putting Dr. Benedict away for his crimes.
This book will not be an easy read for some people. I was hoping this book was going to be more of a courtroom drama but it was not. I didn't find this book very believable and I rolled my eyes multiple times. Just not what I was expecting, sorry :( 2.5 stars rounded up.
Her, Too by Bonnie Kistler grabbed me from the first page, and did not let up until the shocking finale. This is a legal thriller that hits on many of the ripped from the headlines topics of today: workplace sexual assault, harassment and retaliation, sexting, cybersecurity, and quality of life issues. There is a lot packed into this novel, which gives the reader a lot to think about though it doesn't feel overdone.
I did not think that I would like the main character. Kelly McCann is a defense attorney who has become well-known for her success in defending men accused of sexual assault. Ms. Kistler has, however, masterfully created a character that is not only likable, but so sympathetic that I was rooting for her after about 50 pages. The other characters are equally likable, or not as appropriate, and enough detail was included to give them depth.
The pace of the story is tight, and I read it in basically one session (though I had to sleep)! It reminded me of John Grisham's legal thrillers, which I love, and while I have not read The Cage or House on Fire, Kistler's previous novels, I will be doing so, ASAP.
Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Perennial for the digital ARC of Her, Too by Bonnie Kistler. The opinions in this review are my own.
First off, thank you so much to @harperbooks for my advance copy! I was excited to get a chance to read this and Happy Pub Week to it as well!
This story covers some heavy topics. It is definitely done with care/grace, which is always appreciated, and I think the author did a good job being sensitive with all of the trigger warnings. The story mainly comes to us from the POV of Kelly (our main character). At first, we are made to not really care for Kelly. I mean-a criminal defense attorney for those accused of sexual assault?! However, she grows on you, and she does have her heart in the right place.
Like I said earlier this book is trigger warnings galore BUT Kistler does a good job of humanizing all the characters. She gives voice to the victim and gives us a damn satisfying ending. I liked that everything was wrapped up and I appreciated the big twist because I truthfully did not see it coming. I read this in one sitting, and I think it will stick with me for quite some time.
Last year I read and enjoyed Bonnie Kistler’s THE CAGE, so I was excited to get my hands on her newest thriller. And it did NOT disappoint 👏
The subject matter is very intense as it talks a lot about sexual assault, so please be aware of that before picking it up.
I love a good revenge story and this one was done very well. The main character, Kelly, won’t go down without a fight — even if that means finding a creative way to get justice. She joins forces with the other victims, and I quickly found myself invested in their search for revenge. It gets more intense the further into the book you get, and I didn’t see the ending coming.
Read if you like — 🩸fast-paced thrillers 🩸revenge stories 🩸unlikeable main characters who have growth
Given the content warnings, the author did a great job of tackling this difficult topic. I empathized with the characters and, in the vein of the #metoo movement, it packs a punch.
I love Bonnie Kistler and was so excited to get an ARC of “Her Too.” While I knew the material may be tough for me read, I’ve enjoyed Bonnie’s other books so much I decided to take the risk. Before I get started I will say this book needs a TW for sexual assault.
“Her Too” is the story of high powered lawyer, Kelly McCann. Kelly’s job is to defend wealthy men accused of sexual misconduct, and she’s great at it. Kelly feels on top of the world when she gets the doctor who has cured Alzheimer’s off a charge of rape until he sexually assaults her that same night. Kelly knows she can’t go to the police as it could end her career, but vows to get revenge.
This was a heavy ready, but I never felt like I couldn’t push though. I liked some of the girl power elements of the book. My only negative thing to say is at times I felt like some of the subplots were distracting. Overall though I would recommend this book. It was original and I enjoyed it until the end.
I was pleased to have an early review copy of this excellent novel. Lawyer Kelly McCann represents a truly vile man, a doctor named George Benedict. She's done damage control on many sexual assaults and must deal with her own cognitive dissonance over working with him. Kelly's husband has been unresponsive for ten years after a brain injury, and Kelly needs to support her two children. But when Benedict assaults Kelly, she realizes things must change, and fast. The plot on this book ticks along rapidly, pulling the reader in with every turn. I love the legal aspects of Kistler's books, but the emotional impact is the most compelling part. I felt a few disconnects between Kelly's internal monologue and my views that rubbed me the wrong way, but this may not bother some readers. I'm excited for more books and need to go back and read the one I haven't read!
This book hooked me instantly! 😳 If you're in a slump read it !!! For a minute I thought this would be a bad read .. you have every hot button issue being talked about but it worked without being overwhelming. I loved how everything came together & maybe the science in this book wasn't spot on but it's a book not a science journal . I loved reading how the main character grew throughout this book. Brilliant!
Also I would love to read a book from Courtney's pov. && I absolutely love the "book club" the main character has with her daughter. ❤️
I only started reading last night, but there was so much suspense and intrigue, something just kept me compelled to keep reading. Her Too was the first book I've read by Kistler, so it was a fantastic introduction to her works and I can't wait to read more of them.
The story is told by Kelly and three other women who have also been victims of rape. Their rapist...a world renowned scientist who is professing he's created the cure for Alzheimers.
Revenge is a dish best served cold and it's time he was held accountable for his crimes!
I resonated with this book. I really understood what it was trying to convey and I felt like it was a perfect embodiment the frustration and asking, why didn’t you speak up? That was the exact way to describe how frustrated an external can be, but this real struggle that the victim has to suffer with really makes it clear. It was a bit heavy to read, especially in the very beginning, but I think that the author has a way with words that can describe things without going in to the disturbing details. I recommend this book although it’s a more heavy read and could be triggering to some.
I would give this one 3 to 3 1/2 stars. I think the book started out slowly but gradually built up and became pretty interesting. I am not personally a fan of #metoo books - it is a difficult subject matter - but this one is not solely about that - it does cover some other things like quality of life. I think Bonnie Kistler is a talented author - I don't think I enjoyed this one as much as I did her previous book The Cage but will definitely read another book by this author.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book, I wish I read it sooner. It is hard to talk about the #metoo movement in general, let alone when there are NDAs applied. It is hard to be a lawyer, you are responsible with so many secrets. I liked how this was a few stories wrapped into each other. I look forward to reading from this author again in the future.
Are you looking for an edge-of-your-seat thriller that turns deadly? Then look no further than HER, TOO, Bonnie Kistler's absorbing novel that may serve a greater purpose than mere entertainment.
