Enter Dr. Lucian Casteel, a man who threatens to knock down the walls she has built around her heart. As much as Rebecca tells herself to stay away from him, fate has other plans.
She thought she’d experienced it.
Dr. Lucian Casteel knows what it’s like to have your heart broken. After suffering the biggest betrayal of his life, he’s finally pulled himself back together. Or so he thought. When he meets nursing student Rebecca Westfeldt, she’s like a shot of adrenaline straight to his heart. She’s everything he could ever need and want. Lucian isn’t ready to risk another heartbreak, but he’s got to have her.
Until him.
When Lucian comes to Rebecca’s rescue not once, but twice and he makes a simple request in return, what starts off as a friendship leads to more. Try as they might to keep their relationship casual, as time goes on both will learn that the best laid plans don’t always work, especially when hearts are involved. As past relationships threaten to overwhelm the future, can they fight the pain of his past, or will Lucian allow the best thing to come into his life to slip through his fingers? Will Rebecca be strong enough to protect her heart from the one man capable of breaking it again?

Immature

The heroine was so immature for a 28-year old woman it was painful to keep reading. Lucian told her clearly from the beginning that he didn’t want a relationship. She let herself fall into a friends with
benefits situation but kept pretending to herself that it actually was a relationship. How could she allow both her cousin and her mother to think that Julian was her boyfriend? Actually after only a few weeks what was the need to share all these details with her family?
What was really frustrating was her constant push for knowing all his secrets? They barely knew each other. I can completely understand why he wouldn’t mention his daughter to people he just started hanging out with or sleeping with. Her propensity to listen to hospital gossip was also too high school for a grown woman.
The whole debacle with Max was another case of her silly behavior. The same way she is wondering why is the ex wife at his place, is the same way he wondered why she would let an ex fiancé who dropped her the day before the wedding, into her home and would be all chummy with him. Worse, she lied to Lucian, went to dinner with Max behind his back and wonders why Lucian is distrustful. She had the unmitigated gall to tell Max about Lucian’s private business as if she somehow still owe him an explanation, and also let Max believe that Lucian was her boyfriend. The icing on the cake was her falling asleep in bed with Max and basically accusing Lucian of causing Max getting knifed.
I also didn’t like the fact that Lucian was the one constantly chasing her, asking to spend time with her. It felt forced.
As an aside, I wish we could stop having a rude sidekick in bwwm novel, playing into the ghetto black woman stereotype. Vicky lack of filter wasn’t cute in the least.

Hmm...

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about the book. No, let me correct that, I enjoyed the book but am unsure if I like the characters. It was different from the mafia or rich playboy stories I am used to reading, so I think that is what atrracted me to the story. I liked that Vicky and others played a part in the story to make it more than just about Lucien and Rebecca. I disliked Luciens's back and forth attitude and uncertainty in what he wanted. I am so disappointed that I have to wait to find out what happens next.

Weak

Three and a half stars. The h is a doormat. She's too weak and the H is a user. As a reader I failed to connect with either character. This is my first time reading this author. I will give the second book a try. Hopefully, Rebecca develops self esteem.
