Man this is turning out to be one of my favorite things I've ever read. Easily one of the tops in terms of my comic readings, up there with Miyazaki's Nausicaa (which is still king for me). Awesome story, great world-building, spectacular art, super fun, wacky, unpredicatable... the creative team behind this series is phenomenal.
Volume 6 of Last Man, entitled Rescue, and this is mainly what happens. Strong man Richard Aldana has a map that The Order of the Lion wants, in order to gain world domination, they've kidnapped Marianne and Adrian as bait to get the map. Richard rescues, but . . . it's not that simple, finally. It's mainly an action/adventure story, this volume, which didn't have enough balance until near the end with the love story. . . so I was thinking 3 stars, and then something surprising happens at the end that makes it better (though, at a glance, some were disappointed by this something. . .
French team, animator, video-game-maker, comics guy team, so there will be games, movies. You might as well get on board. It's black and white, gray-washed, accomplished.
Oh, and I read it in English, but there isn't an English version listed yet.
I thought the giant, extended fight scene that comprises most of this volume was drawing the series to a close until the rug got pulled out from under my feet in what I thought would be the denouement. There must be a book #7, and I must find it.

Review:
It is with fever pitched action, fisticuffs and gun-battles that draws the first arc of The Last Man to a close. Needless to say the stakes have never been higher, and the 5 volumes leading up to The Rescue almost, if possible, seem tame by comparison. A grittier, more dark overtone hovers over this installment and being deep in the heart of the enemies lair, with two of their tow in captivity (hence the rescue), this tone expands greatly on the intrigue and plot facets, present in the last graphic novel, The Order, and ramps them up a notch. Neatly tying together most major plot threads, The Rescue by Balak + Sanlaville + Vive̒s is a strong jumping on point for new readers, and a satisfying conclusion for those who have kept up with the series.
The writing has never been more finessed throughout the previous 5 volumes. A firm grasp of character, and their respective adversaries, give this a solid in road into the psyches of the protagonists and antagonists alike. There is no more room for guesswork at this stage in the game and it shows. The characters speak naturally, act as if you’d expect them to, and respond in kind. The sheer synergy of character to voice resonates throughout this graphic novel and the actions of both sides, desperate on both accounts, is simply astounding. A lot of this is dealt with by placing word over action or actions over words when necessary. Not a word or act is wasted – everything moves towards the unexpected twist at the endgame.
The art, as always, is slick and clean – incredibly well rendered for the topics it covers. The realistic backgrounds and stylized manga characters, is as beautiful and well composed as they were earlier in the series. There are no qualms here, about stating the art is worth the price of admission. Skillful lines and shading, often deep shading, depict fantastically, the crime ridden world the characters interact in. The style is taken with lettering (or dialogue balloons) in mind and the graphic novel reads both pictorially and word-wise well. The most powerful impact is placed on the fight scenes; seemingly because this graphic novel is one big multi-faceted fight. Kudos must go to the art team for keeping the art fresh and dynamic – even at this stage of the game where they could sit back and coast. It would be easy to let this happen, but the art keeps giving more and more of itself, almost topping the previous five volumes.
Overall, for fans of the Street Fighter series, manga in general, and battling martial arts amidst mystical and technological wonders – the ingredients of many a fine story – should pick this up. You won’t be disappointed, especially at the twist ending. For new readers this is an excellent jumping on point in the series, and for old, well, our journey begins anew.
My God! What a story what an ending! This volume ties up everything that's been happening and I thought, wow, is this the end of the series? But then wham, bang. The unimaginable happens. Then it's ten years later and a new beginning. Fantastic!
When Richard Aldana attempts to rescue Marianne and Adrian from a villainous drug lord determined to rule the world, a fallen friend that has transformed into a monstrous enemy, he finds himself in more danger than he ever had in the ring.
This 6th book of the Last Man series is filled with excitement and adventure and is sure to entertain graphic novel fans. While the ending provides much surprise, the resolution leaves the door open for a new direction in the series. In addition to the action packed story are the great graphics that enhance the text. This latest novel though, is much grittier and violent than the previous six books in the series.
A stunning conclusion (kinda) to the Last Man series. Richard and H storm the island hideout where Adrian and Marianne are held hostage by a team of resurrected zombie knights. Sounds crazy? It is crazy. Previous volumes have featured plenty of fighting, but this volume is all fighting. And with Vives thrilling illustrations, it's all jaw-dropping. I can't think of many other books that left me on the edge of my seat like this one. And that conclusion! No spoilers, but it's the biggest twist of the entire series. Just stunning.
Ok, I can't get through this review without spoilers, so turn back if you haven't read this volume.
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
First, I have to say what the hell?! I felt like like this volume opened up with our heroes caught between a rock and a hard place, with Tomie, Marianne, and Adrian all down for the count, but then things started to look up. I mean Christo is freakin' amazing, I loved the reveal that he was actually a she and that she had destroyed her race because of their brutality towards women. Then we have Tomie getting shot and dying, but brought back to life by those cult wackjobs, the reporter guy is so cute and useless, Duke Diamond's redemption story, Aldana and Marianne finally back together, Adrian's no nonsense fighting skills, and his hand drawn map left with Tomie in case she ever wants to visit them (so precious). I mean there was so much to like here, and then....they return to the veil for their happy ending and BOOM.
Aldana gets dragged away in chains. Marianne gets stabbed and is DEAD?! Epic rage right there. And poor Adrian is tossed into a freakin' magical hole?! Then. Then. To add insult to injury the book has the gall to say, "Ten years later..." Woah boy. Duck and cover because I am not happy. All I can say is there had better be some time travel up in here to fix this nonsense otherwise...
Maybe I just wasn't expecting this direction and amount of pain from losing characters that I have followed through this series, but I just have to ask, why do the female characters always end up being the ones who die? Can't we end this ridiculous pattern?

To say this graphic novel series is addictive is an understatement. I fell in love with several of the characters as I read the first five volumes, and I eagerly anticipated this one since I knew that Richard Aldana and his friends were on the way to rescue Marianne, Adrian, and Tomie from the clutches of a deluded drug lord intent on teasing out secrets about the fantasy world about which he'd read. I was not disappointed in the least by the excellent artwork, intriguing storyline or complex characters. Finally, some of the truth about Aldana's behavior in the ring is revealed as well as some of the secrets behind Cristo Canyon. Then, too, some reprehensible characters are allowed to atone for their faults. Could it be that these characters will be allowed to live happily ever after? Alas, I should have known better because just as I started to relax and think about how wonderful things are going to be once Richard, Marianne, and Adrian return home to the Valley, the unthinkable happens. I never saw this coming, and my heart broke. Since this book ends with a couple of scenes that occur ten years later, I have no idea what will happen next. I don't know how I can come to care about other characters in the way that I did for these. The last panel tells me that I will have no choice but to wait desperately for the next installment in this gripping and complicated story.
This sixth volume of the Last Man (which will make sense only really if you read the five previous volumes).
The Order of The Lion are desperate to get to the Valley of the Kings and are using every possible means to get the map and to manipulate Richard Aldana. He, in turn, is out to rescue Marianne & Adrian. Plenty of fighting and action ensue.
This volume also ends on a cliffhanger as there is a seventh volume in which the plot will continue.
This comic is made of black-and-white line drawings (in the digital edition anyway). Engaging and entertaining. Some translation/spelling/missing words mistakes: seperate
The story continues in its usual way: by introducing the unusual. Vives knows how to make things interesting, and the silent twists just keep coming. I'm especially eager for the next installment.
Received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I have to say I was a little confused when I started this graphic novel then I realized it was volume 6
Ok more like 3,5/5 because it was great and lots of things made me want to rate it 4/5 but because of that one thing I'm not so sure. (But it's totally a series worth your time!!!)
Last man è sempre interessante, ma il finale di questo volume è un colpo al cuore. Serie che continua a migliorare numero dopo numero. Bravissimi tutti. Leggetelo.
