Kevin Couple and Michael Sansolo have taken approximately sixty movies and linked the movie's key message to essential business lessons.

The ones that stood out for me include:

Star Wars: the easy choice is the wrong choice

Jaws: denial is never a good idea

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: ignorance can get you killed

Big: be the customer

The Big Picture written by Kevin Coupe and Michael Sansolo is organized by film genre and provides dozes of short synopsis of movies and ties them to key business lessons. With more than three decades of retail and media and publishing experience each, they provide some additional anecdotes that add additional context and value to the reader.

As a fan of "Morning News Beat" and of both authors, I was so happy to finally dive into this book during the quiet end of year period and I wasn't disappointed. Here are some of my favorites.

1) Hoosiers - Word Matter- If you have a key inspirational message to share, go back to Hoosiers and see how it is done to get a small-town basketball team to win a state40 title.

2) 50 Dates- Romance Your Customer- No matter how many times you sees a customer, we should never take them for granted and be super attentive to their needs.

3) Big- Be the Customer- This Tom Hanks classic about a Toy Company that lost their way in understanding the customer. The floor-based toy piano in the Toy Store demonstrates the idea of getting into the mind, life and joy of the customer likely more than any other movie.

4) Rocky- Go the distance- The business reference here is not only about ROCKY being able to take your lumps and keep going but also about Sylvester Stallone who had to shop this movie around a long time and wait until the studios accepted and cast him as the leading man. Never give up!

Some of these are simple lessons but these are the lessons that businesspeople forget as we create and execute extremely complicated strategies. Keep things simple! Highly entertaining and recommended!
