Then he was gone
Zachary Goldman just wants to put everything that happened to him that night at the hands of a monster behind him forever. But when Heather, his estranged sister, asks for his help in bringing her own rapist to justice, there is no way he can turn her down.
The case is cold, three decades ago. Heather never saw her attacker’s face, as he was wearing a mask. At the time, the police did everything they could, but there have been new advancements in technology and Zachary hopes to turn up something he can use to solve the case.
Somehow, he needs to find a way to finally bring Heather some peace, even when it means dealing with his own painful memories.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a compelling story of family misfortune, child abuse and neglect, and of the inadequacies and challenges of the foster care system. Zachary’s devotion to a sister who, in truth, is nearly a stranger to him is inspiring. His dogged determination and unrelenting resolve to help another individual, regardless of his own problems or limitations, make him a remarkable and uniquely appealing character. The engaging characters, the intricately detailed storylines involving relevant and provocative issues, and the beautifully crafted flow of narrative make the stories in this series enthralling, entertaining, and completely addictive. I am eagerly looking forward to the next one.

Zachary is again investigating closer to home when his long estranged sister hooks up with him again, asking him to find her rapist from 30 years prior. He manages to track down the rapist with the help of present day DNA technology and public genetic databases. Meanwhile, Zachary's relationship with Kenzie is beginning to deteriorate, and I believe the title is describing Zachary. Kenzie complains he is not present in the moment when they are intimate. Zachary is suffering from the event of the last book. The author needs to give him a break! So much crap has befallen Zachary in his lifetime and Teddy Archuro adds a very heavy burden. Zachary is so broken I am not sure how he functions. While things work out for his sister, more crap is heaped on Zachary at the end of this novel. Is the author trying to make him knock himself off and finish the series? It sure seems like it.

A tale of family drama and intrigue…

This is the 6th book in the Zachary Goldman series and since I have, so far, only read this and the previous book, my comments should be considered accordingly. Unlike the last book, this one is less about non-stop action and dangerous adventure and more about family drama. It seems that each book reveals a little more detail of Zachary’s backstory and, thereby, illuminates why he is the flawed hero that he is in this series. Zachary and his five siblings were surrendered by their parents and put into various foster care homes for most of their childhoods. The children had been split up and raised by different families and they have had no contact with one another for the last thirty years. Zachary, having been a troubled child with emotional issues (ADHD and PTSD), had been especially challenging to place and was subsequently shuttled from one foster home to another which only amplified his emotional instability in adulthood. Despite his unfortunate upbringing and his ongoing mental health struggles, he has grown into a compassionate individual and a competent private investigator. In this story, Zachary, still recovering from the traumatic events of the last book, is afforded the opportunity to reconnect with an older sister for the first time since childhood and is asked by her to look into a disturbing cold case involving her aggravated sexual assault as a fourteen-year-old girl. While almost everyone, including the police detective whom he consults regarding his sister’s assault, feel that there is virtually no chance of solving a thirty-year-old cold case, Zachary brings his considerable skill, perseverance, and tenacity to bear and achieves the impossible. This is a compelling story of family misfortune, child abuse and neglect, and of the inadequacies and challenges of the foster care system.

Wow. What an intriguing mystery with plenty of suspense to keep you reading. Zachary needs to get past his attack and then his sister asks for help for her attack. You won’t want to stop reading until you’ve finished the entire story.

Workman hits another homer. Her stories are magnificent. He Wasn't There is was different than her cozy mysteries. This one is deep. I've only read one other of the Goldman series and even tho' it was ages ago I still remember, and they tie together just great.
I do believe sh is one of my favourite authors and I highly recommend her work to everyone.
Keep up the good work dear lady.
Cheers

What a storyline!

I really enjoyed this book. A different type of mystery involving a broken family, broken children in care. A Sister hoping her long lost brother could help her. The main issue was that her brother needed considerable help himself. But there was so much more in this great storyline. Truly recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I enjoyed the ups and downs of another case solved. This book delves more into the damaged Goldman and his now found sister. The adult subject matter is handled with great decorum and tact. I look forward to the next book.

This was an amazing powerful read from the author.
Really well written plot and story line that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go.
Characters have been fleshed out well and were engaging to read about.
Writing is superbly done and the story just flows so well.
Couldn't put it down once started.
Recommend reading.

Zachary is meeting his sister, Heather, after many years of separation by the foster care system. She is determined to have him work on solving a 30 year old cold case concerning a crime that she experienced. His work to uncover the perpetrator stirs up his own issues. Zachary's support system is there for him, just as he is there for his sister. Both Heather and Zachary come out of the process as stronger individuals.

After one dead end after another toward cracking the case, an ingenious solution was discovered.

This is a very well written book. The issues raised could be very real. I enjoyed reading this book as an Advanced Reader Copy. I am reviewing it of my own free will

This is the 6th in the series. The main character is Zachary who is a PI. His sister he hasn't seen in 30 years wants to meet him. She wants his help to figure out who raped her when she was 14. Zachary decides to try and help her. It is amazing what can happen that you never thought of. Can he find out who to blame?
It is still hard to read because there is so much of him thinking things in his head but you can get use to it.

He felt smothered by the attention Kendra was giving him after his attack.
A call from a sibling to meet, why he wondered, after finding siblings they had only done FaceTime. A sibling wants justice from her attack, after all this time, he can’t say no, he feels guilty of what happened to his family, His past will bring back haunting memories, still he’ll do what he can to give her peace. Family drama,a tight plot, full of emotion, and another winner in this series.

Zachary hasn’t seen his sister since they were separated as children. Now, she wants him find the man who raped her when she was only 14 years old. Once I started reading, I didn’t want to put it down! The writing is very skillful, with a tight plot and believable characters. Highly recommended! I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.

In this book Zachary has more contact with his sister Heather, however its still not that close warm fuzzy feeling. With Zachary however that may never be something that happens.
Things seem to be getting better according to Zachary, but others in his life beg to differ. After another shocking twist, Zachary decides he must change some things.

What's Not to Enjoy?

Relatable, imperfect characters trying to survive in an imperfect world. A tightly plotted storyline. Adult subject matter handled so discretely you wouldn't mind your mid-teen daughter reading it. As always, Mrs. Workman provides an excellent read.

It doesn't have the most extensive plot, but it certainly is very interesting. As always, the story is very well written, and the characters are all great this time.
