“Everyone dies. I am a weapon. Nothing more and nothing less.”

A Futuristic Crime book, it features an all too plausible story about how malevolent forces try to advance their interests while the other guys try to stop them. There’s not just intrigue, there’s plenty of action as well. The story here moves across the city at a breakneck pace, as seen through the lenses of Jackson Cole, Clipper leading the charge. Gangsters, assassins, hitmen, and mafia like teams, where there seems to be no law, it had a Wild West quality to it. Greg Dragon mixes up scene-setting and action-based adventure exceptionally well. His imaginative descriptions of different aspects of the futuristic city, the awe inspiring technology, the sophisticated ordnance, the bio enhanced people,.. transports us to a mind blowing society where carrying arms is the norm, with questionable morals, and strong character development make this enjoyable sci-fi cyberpunk tale an absolute standout.

It’s so heart-stopping and fever-pitched, that you’ll have to take up a permanent position on the edge of your seat. The clever and captivating story is a pure white-knuckle ride to the last page!

I find it hard to express how much this book affected me, not only the storyline, but the dynamic mastery of the writing itself, with an unconventional imagination unique to the author. A grim, gritty, dark and realistic overview of how uncanny and daunting possible future humanity is heading towards. An underworld so degraded, unscrupulous, with no value on a human’s life, that thrives in a near future is what terrifies me, living off the most needed, the most trustful, events and scenes hard to stomach. In spite of the grey outlook, people still have values, humans still feel hope, still love.., it was heart wrenching to see all the depravation, but I carried on reading till the end.
An exciting, heartfelt, high-octane, engrossing, and action-packed premise. A truly unmissable cyberpunk read. I highly recommend this book.

“Humanity worked hard to destroy nature, and we worked even harder at destroying ourselves at a local level.”

I received a free review copy of this audio book, at my request, and am voluntarily leaving this unbiased review.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. The plot is light and the action is sparse. It is too wordy to be fast paced, and I never really felt connected to the characters.

This story is a Mafia story, of sorts, with organized crime families struggling for control. The main character is an assassin of one of the organizations, and we follow him through the conflict that defines him.

While this sounds exciting, very little actually happens. The book is mostly him asking people for favors, information, exposition, and a huge amount of poetic description of the world around the the man character (usually in the middle of a conversation or action scene).

The book itself isn't overly long, at less than 12 hours. However, there isn't enough plot to fill out the story. The plot is fairly thin, and uses twists and turns to justify the length. However, they feel like they were added to extend the word count, rather than be part of the story.

Like the plot, the world building is also fairly thin. While we are brought into the family, there is no effort to bridge here to there. It is a dystopian world of greed and corruption. But that's about all we know. There is no explanation of what happened to get to there. Or how there even works. We hear of politicians and working class people, but we don't really see them or how they actually live. All we get are statements that the main character doesn't want to be them, they are "clockers" and that's it.

There is also a lack of character development, in this story. The main character is boring. He has love and hate, in him, but that's it. There is no joy, humor, or personality, to bring him to life. He loves is organization and his girlfriend. He hates his enemies. Everyone else he is either mildly compassionate for or is mildly annoyed by. He feels more like a robot than a fully fleshed out character. Similarly, all the secondary characters are completely flat and what you see is what you get. The characters we don't meet are the only interesting ones, and that's a shame.

Because the characters are so flat it is hard to emphasize with them. How do you feel attached to a cardboard cutout of a person?

The super long poetic descriptions are also very distracting. Both because they serve no purpose other than to show that the author can write like this, and because they are poorly timed. Something will be going down, then suddenly the narrator is waxing philosophical about the nature of life, or the beauty of the sky, or how wonderful it is to be in love. Then bam, back to where we were. It completely stops the flow of the story and makes it hard to follow.

The story, itself, was fun at times. Car chases, fights, etc. There should have been more of this and less of everything else. Honestly, there wasn't enough of it to hold my attention.

The voice narration, by Ryan Haugen, was done fairly well. He had several different voices of both male and female. His voice was easy to listen to and understand. It was good work.

All in all, this was an OK story mixed with too much filler and not enough substance. You cannot substitute poetry for plot in a crime drama. The missing character development and world building really highlighted the thin plot and made this book difficult to stay engaged in. The voice narration was pretty good, and while I'd listen to another one of Ryan Haugen's books again, it would not be one from this series.

Received as an ARC from Booksirens, this is an honest review. A fine story but it's the creative word lingo the author crafted; while it fit with the story, the words made it a little confusing to keep track of and has to keep checking the provided definitions for them that dragged the story a bit.

Our hero is the top assassin in the guild, but you know what they say about being on top. There is only one way to go and everyone wants to help you fall.

This is a science fiction story with a bit of a cyberpunk vibe to it. The book starts at a brisk pace and only gets better from there. Both the setting and the characters are well developed and detailed, with plenty of intriguing facets to discover along the way. Overall, this was a fast paced and enjoyable story and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Highly recommended.

Not really my Genre to be fair, I think in all my reading this might only be the second Si Fi I've ever read! Not sure how much of the authors back catalogue I will read as I believe this is a standalone but actually enjoyed this. Somewhere between a Micky Spillane & Blade Runner, if I had one criticism it would be that we never really find out how the rival gang get's their info, I was expecting a twist but it never happened. Well paced, well written & the author is detailed enough to paint a picture of this world- Almost Mega City 1 for any fans of Dredd!
Certainly worth a look.

MC is a bad guy assassin rising in a violent city. Fairly tight story of his life and times ... Science fiction future is just a setting for the story. Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. Purchased this edition on March 14, 2025, for free. Not much interest in reading the sequel.
